What are hives?

As small as jujubes or as large as saucers, hives are an allergic reaction that take the form of itchy red bumps or welts on the skin. They are the result of cells releasing histamine, a chemical that makes blood vessels leak fluid into the deepest layers of skin. It’s not clear why some people get hives, while others don’t, and the triggers associated with hives are so numerous, they fit the category of everything in the world. Just for starters, hives can be caused by sunlight, heat, cold, pressure, stress, viral infections, or medications. Name anything that can cause an allergy, and it can also cause hives, including pollen, dust, dander, dust mites, shellfish, and other foods.A simple antihistamine can help reduce the allergic reaction causing your hives. Choose one of the drugs that don’t cause drowsiness. While you let the medicine do its work, try the handy home treatments below for added relief. You’ll also want to get to the bottom of what’s causing your hives so you can avoid itching in the future.(Related: Is It Hives or a Rash? Heres How to Tell the Difference)

8Natural Home Remedies For Hives

  1. Unless you have hives that are triggered by cold (which is rare), take a cool bath or apply a cold compress. Cold shrinks the blood vessels and blocks further release of histamine. To further relieve itching, add colloidal oatmeal to the bathwater and soak for 10 to 15 minutes. (Be careful getting out of the tub, however, that fine-ground oatmeal turns slippery.)
  2. Dab the welts with calamine lotion or witch hazel. These astringents help shrink blood vessels, so they don’t leak so much histamine. Alternatives to calamine lotion are milk of magnesia or Pepto-Bismol. Because they are alkaline, they help to relieve the itching.
  3. In a small cup, add a few drops of water to baking soda and stir until you get a paste. Spread the paste on the hives to help stop irritation and relieve the itching.
  4. Do you have some cream of tartar in your kitchen cabinet? It might be just what you need to relieve the hives. Make a paste as above and apply.
  5. Mix 1 teaspoon of any kind of vinegar with 1 tablespoon of lukewarm water and apply the mixture to your hives with a cotton ball or tissue to soothe the itching.
  6. An old Chinese folk remedy for hives calls for boiling one-quarter cup brown sugar and one tablespoon fresh ginger in three-quarters cup vinegar for several minutes. Mix a little of this with warm water and apply several times per day.
  7. Herbalists recommend nettle as an alternative to antihistamines. Take up to six 400-milligram capsules a day. Or pick a few handfuls of the weed, steam, and eat. Wear gloves, long pants, and long sleeves to guard against nettle’s stinging leaves.
  8. Take 1,000 milligrams of fish oil in capsule form three times a day. These capsules contain essential fatty acids that have anti-inflammatory properties. Cold-water fish like salmon, bluefish, and albacore tuna are good food sources.

Reduce stress to help hives

  • Stress can cause hives or make them worse. If your tension needs taming, master a nerve-calming technique such as meditation, yoga or progressive relaxation.
  • Brew up a cup of chamomile, valerian or catnip tea. All of these herbs have a sedative effect that may soothe your stress and therefore your hives. To make the tea, stir one teaspoon of the dried herb into one cup of boiling water, steep 10 minutes, strain out the plant parts, and drink the tea.

How to prevent hives

  • To avoid hives, you need to figure out what causes them. If you dont know, start keeping a daily diary. The most probable suspects are things that you eat, drink, or swallow food, drink, supplements, and medications. But even if you dont see any obvious connections, continue keeping your diary, noting other factors like weather, stress levels, clothing, or the amount of time that you spend in the sun. With careful tracking, you may link a specific lifestyle factor with the eruption of those red, itchy welts.
  • Foods most likely to trigger hives include shellfish, nuts, chocolate, fish, tomatoes, eggs, fresh berries, and milk. Some people react to preservatives in certain foods and wine, such as sulfites. Once youve identified a food trigger, eliminate it from your diet and see whether you have fewer outbreaks.
  • Common drug triggers include antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen. But doctors have heard about many other triggers, including sedatives, tranquilizers, diuretics, diet supplements, antacids, arthritis medications, vitamins, eye drops, eardrops, laxatives, and douches.

When to see your doctor about hives

While hives can be uncomfortable, theyre usually harmless and disappear within minutes or hours. Sometimes they hang around for a few days. Seek emergency medical treatment if you develop hives around your eyes or in your mouth or experience difficulty breathing, wheezing, light-headedness, or dizziness. You may have a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis, and the internal tissue swelling can block breathing passages. If youre prone to hives, ask your doctor if you should carry a rapid-injection form of epinephrine in case you develop anaphylaxis. And if you have chronic hives that just dont respond to milder treatments, your doctor may prescribe oral steroids.Next: 7 Reasons You Get Hives on Your Faceand What to Do About Them

Vitamins, herbs and oils keep fluid retention in check and coax your hormones into a breast-friendly balance (more progesterone, less estrogen). And a few dietary changes will help you get some bothers off your chest.

Massage ‘Em

When youre in the shower, soap your breasts and gently massage them from the centre of your chest out to your armpits. This improves blood circulation and the drainage of lymph, the clear fluid that carries infection-fighting agents through your body.

Ice ‘Em

Wrap a towel around a bag of ice cubes or frozen vegetables and apply it to each breast for about 10 minutes. The cold-pack treatment reduces swelling and dulls the pain.

Get Support

Consider wearing support bras instead of underwire bras when your breasts are tender. You may want to wear your bra to bed to reduce nighttime jostling. When you try on a new bra, make sure it cups your breasts without pinching. Once you have new, more comfortable bras, throw away the stretched-out old ones that just dont provide the right support anymore.

Pick Fibre

Consume plenty of fibre, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes (like lentils and black beans) and whole grains. A study at Tufts University School of Medicine found that women on a higher-fibre diet excreted more estrogen, which helps with breast tenderness.

Watch Your Intake of These Foods

  • Cut back your intake of hydrogenated oils, found in margarine, packaged baked goods and snack products. When you eat these oils, your body loses some of its ability to convert the fatty acids in your diet (essential to your health) into gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)a necessary link in a chain reaction that prevents breast tissue from becoming painful.
  • Reduce your consumption of methylxanthine, a component of many common foods, including coffee, cola, tea, wine, beer, bananas, chocolate, cheese, peanut butter, mushrooms and pickles. Most women who endure painful lumps on a cyclical basis will improve if they cut way back on, or eliminate, foods that are high in this compound.
  • Watch your intake of sodium. Sodium increases water retention, which causes your breasts to swell. Be especially careful to keep a cap on your salt consumption starting about two weeks before your period.

A natural boost for treatment of breast tenderness

  • Dandelion is a natural diuretic. Take the herb in capsule form, or make a tea using powdered dandelion root. Simmer two to three teaspoons of the powder in a cup of water for 15 minutes. Drink three cups a day.
  • Try evening primrose oil, a traditional herbal remedy for premenstrual symptoms. It contains an essential fatty acid GLA that may help balance a womans hormones and seems to ease cyclical breast tenderness.
  • Vitamins E and B6 may also work together to help prevent breast tenderness. While you may have to use supplements, you can boost the vitamins in your diet by eating nuts, barley and wheat germ for more vitamin E and avocados, lean meats and spinach for plenty of B6.

Sharing Chinese Herbal Soups and Teas, Steeped in Tradition https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/chinese-herbal-soups-tea-medicine-kyth-and-kyn/ Wed, 25 Aug 2021 16:10:03 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67176586 “I developed kyth + kyn for people to learn more about Chinese culture and be proud of it,” says founder Vivian Man.

The post Sharing Chinese Herbal Soups and Teas, Steeped in Tradition appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
Vivian Man grew up in Hong Kong and in her home, Chinese broths, herbal soups and dessert soups were frequently on the menu. The recipes, often made by her mother or grandparents, changed with the seasons. In the summer, aunties came over with bottles of chrysanthemum tea with goji berries, ingredients for cooling teas that help combat internal heat. In the winter months, there would be ginseng and warming herbs, mixes to help boost the immune system.Mans family moved from Hong Kong to Canada when she was seven and eventually she began learning to make her moms healing soups at their home in Vancouver. These herbal recipes played a huge role in Mans familys health and wellbeing, and as she grew older, Man thought about how she could better preserve and share these traditions. I don’t want my generation and generations after mine to lose touch with our roots and culture, she says. So, she began studying holistic nutrition and in 2017, she left a career in marketing to become a holistic nutritionist. A year later, Man opened kyth + kyn, her modern take on traditional Chinese herb shops. The Vancouver-based online shop sells Chinese wellness products, which include herbal soups and teasincluding some recipes that were staples in Mans family kitchen. Here, Man shares with us her own personal history with Chinese herbs and explains how kyth + kyn honours traditional Chinese medicine while educating people of all backgrounds about its healing properties.

Before starting your business, what was your experience with traditional Chinese medicine?

Throughout my childhood, I’ve gone to traditional Chinese medicine doctors. They would usually be in the back room of the Chinese herbal shop. Theyd take my pulse, look at my tongue and would ask how I was feeling. The doctor would write down their recommended herbs on a sheet of paper. Wed take it to the herbalist at the front of the shop and theyd grab all the herbs, put them in paper sheets and wrap them up for you to take home and boil into soups or teas. They were usually these black concoctions that did not taste good. Youd have to just plug your nose and try to drink it all because your parents said its good for you. But you dont really know whats in it or what its for.Chinese Herbal Soups Chinese Herbal Teas And Chinese Herbal Medicine Canada Online

How did your relationship with Chinese herbs change with time?

As I got older, my mom would try her best to educate me on what the ingredients were, what they did and how to make her soups. But I took it for granted because I always thought shed be around to make it for me. In 2015, my parents moved back to Hong Kong. I missed my moms delicious broths, but I had no clue how to make them. Id FaceTime her and shed tell me what to do. But it was very informal. There was no real recipe. Shed just eyeball all the quantities. Thats when I realized that all of this is in our elders heads. Its not written down or shared anywhere. Thats why I started kyth + kynto preserve these recipes and this culture.

Tell me about the products at kyth + kyn and how you developed them.

I have a cousin who is a traditional Chinese medicine doctor in Hong Kong. He was my first point of contact. He would educate me and make sure what I wanted to put in the Chinese herbal teas and soups would do what I said they would do. As my product line expanded, I reached out to traditional Chinese medicine doctors here in Vancouver. Ive also studied holistic nutrition, so that helped to understand what issues people were facing with their health. While I do have an herbal soup blend, I find theyre more foreign for Westerners, especially dessert soups. So Ive focused on tea blends because theyre accessible. One of our bestsellers is the digest herbal tea blend which helps support digestion after heavy meals. It has peppermint, ginger root and dried tangerine peel. Our glow tea is also popular and its very traditional in Asian households. Its got goji berries and Chinese red dates which are good for skin health and womens health. It increases blood circulation. Moms would give this to their daughters after having their period to replenish blood and recoup for the next cycle.Chinese Herbal Tea Glow Online(Related: 8 herbal teas you can grow in your garden)

Who did you develop these products for?

I had Westerners in mind, but also people like myself who have grown up or were born in the West, know a little bit about herbs from family and are curious about it, but dont fully understand how to use it.I developed kyth + kyn for people to learn more about Chinese culture and be proud of itthat it can be modern and cool. People similar to myself, who have grown up in Canada, say they appreciate that theres a brand out there that represents our culture and is looking to preserve it in a way that is accessible and easy to understand. It feels very nostalgic for them. But they can also drink this with their friends and tell them about it. Westerners tell me that they didnt know they could add Chinese herbs to soups. I have older clients buy ten packs of my soup blends at events or markets because they didnt know when Id be back and they dont really know how to use the internet. Its nice that different backgrounds and age brackets are interested in it.

Are there any misconceptions about Chinese herbal soups, teas or traditional medicine?

There’s a misconception that it has to taste like medicinethat theyre all really dark, black concoctions that do not taste good. But Chinese herbs can be used every day in teas and soups. It can be used as food. Also, and its not just with Chinese medicine but with all alternative medicine, alternative ways to wellness can be seen as inferior to conventional medicine. But I think, nowadays, were really making a good shift towards acceptance of holistic health and trying alternative medicine.(Related: This Soap Brand Is Sharing the Healing Power of Inuit Tradition)

How would you feel if you came across a white-owned company that was doing something similar to what you were doing?

I’ve thought about that a lot recently because of [the Mahjong Line, a group of three white women in Texas that thought the traditional Chinese game of Mahjong needed a “design refresh”]. They wanted to improve the game of Mahjong. Theres also a Western woman who wanted to elevate or modernize Chinese congee. She was putting cinnamon and blueberries in it, as if it was oatmeal.Theres a spectrum. People may think that theyre trying to adopt our culture as best as they understand it. But it depends on how they honour our traditions. A Westerner who feels strongly about Chinese herbs, pays homage to the history behind it and really wants to educate would be different from someone that thinks what theyre doing is elevated or better than whats already out there. That really gets to me.Chinese Herbal Soups Bh Online(Related: How to Be an Ally to the Asian Canadian Community)

How does kyth + kyn honour your Chinese heritage?

Having grown up here, I really wanted to fit in with the Western culture. So I definitely brushed off as much of my Chinese culture as I could. It wasn’t cool to be drinking Chinese herbal teas and soups. But now that Im older, Im thinking ahead to when I have kids and what it is that I want to leave behind for them. If I dont preserve these traditions for the next generation, it will be lost, and it would be a shame because these traditions date back centuries. Chinese herbs are one way for me, through kyth + kyn, to really hold on to that culture and share it with everyone. This story is part of Best HealthsPreservation series, which spotlights wellness businesses and practices rooted in culture, community and history. The post Got a Stiff Neck? Here Are 10 Home Remedies for Neck Pain appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
Whether it’s a shooting pain or a dull ache, neck pain is extremely common: about 71 percent of Canadians will experience neck pain at some point in their lives. After all, your neck has the difficult and important job of holding up your heavy head. Plus, you move your neck around a lot, and it’s not as well protected as the rest of your spine, making it more vulnerable to injury.According to a 2015 review published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, as much as 30 percent of the population experiences neck pain each year. It’s the fourth leading cause of disability, and nearly 50 percent of those with neck pain will continue to experience some pain on and off.Fortunately, though, most cases of neck pain will go away, and there are some simple things you can do at home to help, or even prevent, these minor injuries.(Related: 6 At-Home Massage Tools Physiotherapists Swear By)

Sources of neck pain

“Neck pain can have many causes,” says Stuart J. Fischer, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in New Jersey. “It can result from a single injury, a repetitive stretching, or in older people, arthritic change. In some cases, neck pain can be caused by an infection,” he says.InjuryIf you did something specific to hurt your neck, it could have been as simple as one bad stretch that injured neck muscles, Dr. Fischer says.”You might pull too hard on your neck muscles when you lift something heavy or lift in an awkward position,” he says. “You may not feel the injury as it happens because the pain doesn’t set in until inflammation develops. This can be several hours later or even the next day.”A traumatic injury, such as whiplash from a car crash, can also cause pain, or, your pain could be the accumulation of a bad habit that puts a strain on the ligaments and muscles in your neck.”In some people, pain can develop after multiple repetitive strains such as bending over a computer screen day after day,” Dr. Fischer says. This can also happen due to poor posture, reading in bed, or even stress, which causes you to clench your teeth and tighten your muscles, says Tammy J. Penhollow, DO, a pain management specialist and anesthesiologist in Scottsdale, Arizona.Arthritis and infectionWith arthritis that causes wear-and-tear on the neck joints, Dr. Penhollow says this narrows the space between the joints as well as the space for the cushioning discs between the neck’s spinal bones, leading to neck pain. Arthritis can also cause nerves to compress, creating radiating pain into your head, behind your eyes, into your jaw, and even down the arm, she says.”Neck pain from arthritic or degenerative change tends to happen in older people,” Dr. Fischer says. But, “arthritic pain can develop in younger patients who have had a serious neck injury in the past such as a fracture. Years after the fracture, the neck may become painful.”In addition, “you can also get pain in the muscles of your neck as the result of a viral or bacterial infection,” Dr. Fischer says. For example, this can happen when you have the flu.”A viral infection takes the form of muscle aches and will resolve as the infection clears,” he says. “In rare cases, severe neck pain can come from an infection in your spine such as meningitis.”(Related:6 Things That Can Cause Pain Between Your Shoulder Blades)

What neck pain feel like

“The most common symptoms are tight muscles in the back of the head, along the back and sides of the neck, to the tops of shoulders, and between the scapula, or shoulder blades,” Dr. Penhollow says. You may also experience “headachesoccipital [behind the eyes] or back of the scalp are very common, but they can be top of the head ‘tension’ headaches from muscle tightness,” she says. Also, you may feel “weakness in the arms from muscle fatigue or from nerve compression; or numbness and tingling in the arms from nerve compression,” she adds.

Over-the-counter medications

Because most acute cases of neck pain can be treated successfully at home, you may want to try an over-the-counter medication, such as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) or another simple pain reliever.”For many people, acetaminophen [such as Tylenol] is enough to relieve mild pain symptoms,” Dr. Fischer says. In addition, “simple pain relievers such as acetaminophen are often taken by patients who need relief from pain but cannot take anti-inflammatory medications. These are available in standard and extra strength doses.”NSAIDs such as ibuprofen act to relieve the inflammation in the body that is causing the pain.”They also have a direct pain-relieving effect,” Dr. Fischer says.Common over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve). Larger doses are available by prescription.Just note that NSAIDs can sometimes irritate the stomach or have an effect on blood clotting.”They shouldn’t be taken by anyone with a history of ulcer disease, acid reflux, or colitis,” Dr. Fischer says. “They should also be avoided by patients who are taking blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin), apixaban (Eliquis), and rivaroxaban (Xarelto).”(Related:6 Ways to Reduce Pain in Your Feet, Legs and Back)

Topical rubs, ointments, and patches

In addition to oral medications, you can also try drugstore remedies that are put directly on the place it hurts.”Topical ointments or patches can be applied to the skin and often help relieve pain in the underlying soft tissues and muscles,” Dr. Fischer says. “Some of the more popular are lidocaine patches, which gives a local anesthetic, and diclofenac (Voltaren) gel, which is anti-inflammatory.”

Ice and heat

Ice may help calm the initial inflammation, so you can use it for the first couple of days; then, try heat for pain relief.”Heat, whether a moist or dry heating pad, will often soothe and relax underlying muscles; sometimes a hot shower may have the same effect,” Dr. Fischer says. “While these modalities do not cure the pain, they make you feel better for a short time.”Dr. Penhollow also has a trick for using heat.”One of my favourite recommendations for heat is to take a bag of brown ricenot white as it will burnempty it into a pillowcase [or a clean sock] and tie a knot in it,” she says. She suggests microwaving it until it is warm, but not too hot, or you can get burned. And then place it on your skin.”The rice molds to the shape of the neck and can help release tension in tight muscles and allow loosening, followed by stretching,” she says. “Heat is better for stretching because warm muscles stretch better than cold, tight muscles.”(Related:A Guide to Back Pain Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention)

Stretches

You shouldn’t do any strenuous exercise if you’re having neck pain, but “gently moving your neck in all directions may relieve stiffness,” Dr. Fischer says. However: “hard or forceful stretching should be avoided. Most neck injuries actually occur as the result of a stretch or strain. Repeating any kind of vigorous stretching or strain may actually make the neck pain worse.”Dr. Penhollow advises making sure you’re warmed up, and consider applying heat to the muscles before stretching.”Then, start with simple side-bending of the head from right and left, head forward flexion [bending] and gently looking up toward the ceiling, but only to the point of mild tightness,” she says. “Upper back and arm stretches can also help with the neck. If dizziness or numbness occurs, back off and return your head to neutral.”You could consider yoga, but you should consult with your doctor before starting any stretching program.Especially if your neck pain is frequent, “a course of prescribed physical therapy may first be warranted to assess for specific restrictions, and may result in supervised teaching of the stretches, as well as feedback and correction if anything is not being done correctly,” Dr. Penhollow says.In addition to stretching the neck itself, “having a strong core is also important for neck pain, as the muscles that make up the core on the backside run from the base of the skull to the base of the spine,” Dr. Penhollow says.”Core stabilization exercises can include forearm planks, and can be for as short as 15-second intervals of good form.”(Related:4 Expert Tips You Need to Know to Stretch Properly)

Workspace ergonomics

To prevent neck pain from happening again (or better yet, in the first place), think about what you do during your day.”For many people who spend all day in front of a computer, screen neck pain can be a problemthis has been particularly true during the pandemic because people have been working at home in non-office settings,” Dr. Fischer says.If you’re in an office or other official place of work, your workspace may be following Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines for best ergonomic practices. When working remotely, though, this isn’t the case for many workers.”Often they are bent over a small laptop screen and are straining their necks to watch the screen, keyboard, and bend over to look at a paper document on one side of the computer,” Dr. Fischer says.”The best way to avoid this is to bring your screen to eye level so that your neck is straight and you are not bending forward. It helps to raise the height of your keyboard so that your hands are in a natural position and you do not have to lean to type.”A standing desk converter , or simply a surface that’s at eye level when you’re standing, can be more comfortable and help to ease the problem, Dr. Fischer says.If sitting, the best office chairs for back pain may help as well.(Related:3 Simple Desk Stretches You Should Be Doing While Working From Home)

Improved phone habits

Think about what else in your life may be causing you problems. In addition to your computer, you should also avoid cradling your phone between your head and shoulder with your neck tilted awkwardly to one side, Dr. Fischer says.”Using earbuds or Bluetooth can eliminate that and help with an upright posture,” Dr. Penhollow agrees. Also, avoid bending over when texting to avoid “text neck.”

A smaller bag

In addition, “women carrying heavy purses may benefit from downsizing to a smaller purse and using a cross-body strap,” Dr. Penhollow says. “Even students with heavy backpacks are subject to neck pain and may benefit from a rolling backpack rather than wearing it.”If your job involves a lot of physical work, “proper lifting, carrying, and load transfer techniques are important any time a weight is involved,” she says.

A better pillow

Many of us have woken up with a kink in our neck from time to time.”When you are sleeping it helps to have a small pillow or rolled towel beneath your neck,” Dr. Fischer says.”When you think about it, your head is resting on a hard pillow and your shoulders on the mattress. Your neck is completely unsupported. So putting a small soft pillow underneath your neck may give the muscles more support and help you sleep better,” she says. You can also purchase a special neck pillow if your neck pain at night is frequent.(Related:4 Sleep Hacks to Make Sure You Get Your Vitamin Zzz)

Massage

Sore muscles can benefit from the gentle pressure of massage, which can be done at home by a willing partneryou can even massage yourself.”Soft tissue massage can have the effect [of easing pain short-term] but you need to be careful not to massage too hard and actually injure the muscles,” Dr. Fischer says. There are also self-massaging products you can buy if you want to spend the cash; but again, make sure the pressure is not too forceful. Although massage has been shown to reduce neck pain temporarily, that research is usually based on professional massages.

TENS device

Although it should be used under the supervision of a medical professional, a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) device can be purchased without a prescription for use at home to treat pain.TENS units deliver low voltage electric current to relieve pain. It’s a small box with electrodes and pads that are placed on the muscles that ache. “Different levels of stimulation are appliedvarious frequencies and intensities are dialed in for comfort,” Dr. Penhollow says. This stimulation blocks your perception of pain. For neck pain the most common electrode placements are over the neck, back, and shoulder muscles. This non-invasive, painless therapy is recommended for neck pain by the American Physical Therapy Association in 2017 guidelines published in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.Check with your doctor if you have health conditions or an implantable electrical device like a pacemaker to make sure you can use TENS.

When to see a doctor

Any neck pain that doesn’t get better after a week or that is severe warrants a call to your doctor. In addition, “you should see a doctor for your neck pain if you get numbness in one or both of your arms associated with the pain, you lose strength in one or both of your arms [or legs], you have headaches, dizziness, or double vision, or you develop fever,” Dr. Fischer says.If you have a sudden loss of bowel or bladder control, you should also call the doctor, Dr. Penhollow says. All of these other symptoms indicate something else might be going on other than regular neck pain. For neck pain that doesn’t go away, Dr. Penhollow says your doctor may recommend prescription medications, physical therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, injections, or as a last resort, surgery. Now that you know about the home remedies for neck pain, read about stretches and exercises for shoulder pain.

bowl of vinegar with basil.

Vinegar Fights Infection (France)

French folklore has it that during the 17th-century plague, a gang of four thieves would rob corpses, yet never catch the plague themselves. Supposedly, anointing their bodies with a concoction of vinegar and herbs protected them. The so-called vinaigre des quatre voleurs (four thieves vinegar) is used today in the belief it fights infection. Many of the ingredients steeped in itgarlic, rosemary, sage, lavender, thyme, juniper berry, black pepper and moreare proven to have antibacterial properties. I know people who consume this regularly as an antibacterial, says Stphane Calmeyn, Paris-based editor of Reader’s Digest. He adds that a friend of his with Type 2 diabetes credits it with helping regulate his blood sugar. Though more research is needed, there is evidence that vinegar, particularly apple cider vinegar, can affect blood sugar levels: it delays the rate at which the stomach empties and starch is digested, which reduces the blood-sugar spike after a meal. But check with your doctor before adding it to your diet, particularly if you are taking blood-sugar-lowering medications.Apple cider vinegar may also prevent overeating. A small Swedish study found that those who consumed vinegar with a meal reported feeling more satiated than those who didnt consume vinegar. That could prevent unhealthy snacking later in the evening. Its best not to drink vinegar undiluted, as its acidity could damage tooth enamel. Instead, add one or two teaspoons to water or tea.(Related: 11 Things That Can Happen When You Drink Apple Cider Vinegar Every Day)

Fresh papaya on a stone ground.

Papaya Aids Digestive Health (Malaysia)

When her husband got food poisoning while travelling in Malaysia in 2017, editor Bonnie Munday heeded a recommendation for a local remedy. We didnt have any medicine for tummy troubles, but our hotel manager advised eating ripe papaya, says Bonnie, who is on Reader’s Digests International Edition team and is based in Toronto. She was skeptical but bought some of the fruit from a beach vendor. An hour or two after my husband ate it, he felt so much better.A study from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria published in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that papaya, an orange-fleshed fruit that grows in the tropics, fights intestinal parasites. When researchers gave a papaya seed preparation to children who tested positive for intestinal parasites, it was shown to be anti-helminthic (capable of eliminating parasitic worms) and anti-amoebic (capable of destroying or suppressing amoebas); it treated their parasites without harmful side effects. And results of a double-blind placebo-controlled trial that were published in the journal Neuroendocrinology Letters in 2013 showed that volunteers with digestive complaints like bloating and constipation had significant improvements after ingesting a papaya pulp supplement called Caricol. Papaya is also rich in vitamin C, and high in water and fibre content, which regulates bowel activity. Ever since that time in Malaysia, says Bonnie, if we see papaya at the store, we buy it, just for overall digestive health.(Related: Why Staying at Home Causes Constipationand How to Get Relief)

Calendula flowers in stone mixing bowl.

Calendula Calms Inflammation (Germany)

Many people in Germany consider calendula a miracle cure, and have their own recipe for a balm, says Annemarie Schfer, who works on the RD team in Stuttgart. Her cousin Marlen, a teacher, recalls that when her mother grew calendulaalso called marigoldsin her garden, shed mix their orange and yellow heads with warm pork fat (you can also use petroleum jelly, beeswax, or olive oil). After a day of steeping, the mixture was strained and jarred, to be used on rough hands, insect bites, acne, and other skin irritations.High levels of antioxidants in the dried petals reduce the damage caused by free radicals. Laboratory and animal research has shown the flowers contain anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial components that prevent infection and heal wounds by helping form new blood vessels and tissue. In patients with venous leg ulcers treated with either calendula ointment or saline solution dressings, calendula helped ulcers heal much faster.(Related: 18 Anti-Inflammatory Foods to Eat to Reduce Pain)

Licorice root its powder in tea.

Licorice Relieves Sore Throat (Netherlands)

Licorice-based candy, called dropjes, are as Dutch as wooden shoesbut while few farmers still wear wooden shoes, everybody eats dropjes. Its a sort of national pride, says editor Paul Robert in Amsterdam. And you can get them everywheresupermarkets, newsstands, pharmacies. They come in all shades of brown and black with flavours ranging from very sweet to very salty.Besides being somewhat of an addiction for the Dutch, its widely known in northern European countries that licorice also serves a medicinal purpose: sore-throat relief. Indeed, a 2013 randomized, double-blind study of 236 people by the Medical University of Vienna found that patients who gargled a licorice solution before going into surgery requiring throat intubation had a lower risk of sore throat after the surgery. The extract of the licorice root, Glycyrrhizin, tastes sweeter than sugar, despite having a zero glycaemic index. But its not safe to consume more than 100 milligrams per day, as it can dangerously reduce blood potassium levels. (A cup of licorice tea contains roughly 30 milligrams, according to The British Medical Journal.)When I was a child, says Paul, the best thing about having a cold was that Id get lots of dropjes. Sucking on them soothed my throat back then, and still does now. Dropjes are an acquired taste, especially the salty ones. Once, he recalls with a laugh, I gave them to an American friend, who told me they tasted just as terrible as the raw herring and smoked eel Id given her earlier!

Garlic cloves and bulb in vintage wooden bowl.

Garlic Gets Rid of Warts, Corns, Calluses (Portugal)

We use a lot of garlic in our cuisine, says editor Mario Costain Lisbon. But some people, especially in rural areas, also use it to get rid of warts, corns, and calluses. Corns and calluses both involve a buildup of skin at pressure points on the foot, while warts are small growths that can occur anywhere on the body and are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. Research from 2005 published in the International Journal of Dermatology showed that warts treated daily with a garlic extract disappeared for all the study subjects within two weeks, and corns disappeared for 80 per cent of subjects after three weeks.Garlic has antibacterial properties (thanks to its main component, allicin) and its antiviral effect may attack the virus that causes warts. Be careful not to allow raw garlic to touch healthy skin as it can cause irritation and damage similar to a burn. It worked for RD reader Georgina of central Portugal. Heres what she told us on Facebook: A few years ago, when my friends aunt noticed me limping because of a callus, she told me about this home remedy. I baked a few garlic cloves, crushed them, and applied the pulp to the callus, avoiding healthy skin. I covered it with gauze and changed this compress daily. Although the smell was a little intense, after five days, my callus disappeared.

St. John's wort extract on the wooden table.

St. John’s Wort Soothes Skin (Slovenia)

We use a balm containing St. Johns wort to promote wound healing and soothe skin, says editor Maja Lihtenvalner in Ljubljana, Slovenia. St. Johns wort is a plant with yellow flowers thats native to Europe, northern Africa, and southwestern Asia. She describes how her friend Neven, a consultant and olive oil producer in his 50s, remembers his grandmother always having the remedy in her kitchen. Neven would spend summer vacations at her house on the Adriatic Sea, and often got sunburned. His granny would apply a mixture of St. Johns wort and olive oil to his painful skin. She also used it on bruises and insect bites. He says it was always a relief.Animals studies out of Turkey in the past few years have shown that St. Johns wort promotes wound healing and also relieves burns; rats treated topically with St. Johns wort four times a day experienced more rapid healing than those in the other groups. And a 2010 Iranian randomized, double-blind clinical trial of 144 women published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine showed that women who had undergone caesarean sections and applied a St. Johns wort ointment three times a day for 16 days had improved wound healing and less pain and scarring than those in the placebo and control groups. Ingesting St. Johns wort can also treat mild to moderate depression, and menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. But speak to your doctor before taking it, because it can cause serious side effects and drug interactions.(Related: Quick Fixes for Bee Stings, Bug Bites, Sunburns, and Other Summer Woes)

Arnica flowers

Arnica Reduces Bruising (Mexico)

Arnica is popular in Mexico, says RD editor Luis Eduardo Pineda in Mexico City. I played basketball when I was a kid, and sometimes my fingers would get painfully bruised. My mother would rub them with arnica balm, and in a few days the bruising would be gone. These days, Luis uses it for sore muscles. I keep arnica balm in my first-aid kit. Anti-inflammatory arnica, from the same family as asters and daisies, is said to reduce swelling and bruising. A 2013 review of 174 people with hand arthritis found that arnica gel reduced pain and improved function in the hand as effectively as an ibuprofen gel. As arnica can be poisonous, it should not be taken by mouth.(Related: 8 Things Pain Doctors Do to Prevent Arthritis)

fresh aloe vera leaves and glass of aloe vera gel.

Aloe Vera Relieves Burns (Mexico)

Luis has another go-to: aloe vera, or sbila. A review of four studies from Asia, published in the journal Burns, concluded that aloe mucilage (the gel inside its leaves) and some aloe products can accelerate healing of minor burns several days faster than conventional medication. Not long ago, I accidentally grabbed the handle of a hot pan, recalls Luis. Luckily I keep sbila in a flowerpot on my patio, so I got relief quickly.

Macela Flowers and medicament on rocks.

Macela Soothes Cough (Brazil)

When we were kids, if we had a cough my grandmother would whip one egg yolk with sugar and, when it had whitened, combine the mixture with a cup of macela [also spelled marcela] tea, says Tanara Vieira, a designer for Readers Digest from Rio Grande do Sul. It tasted so good that my sister, my cousins and I used to pretend we were coughing so she would give it to us. Across Brazil, plants have long been used medicinally. A review of several studies published in 2014 in the Brazilian Journal of Pharmacognosy sought to show whether a variety of plants of the southern Rio Grande region offers the health benefits they are purported to. The review showed that indeed, in several pre-clinical studies, theres evidence Tanaras grandmother was right: macela (Achyrocline satureoides), which is a plant in the daisy family, appears to be antispasmodic, helping relieve a cough. Its also muscle-relaxing, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic.(Related: When to Worry About a Cough That Wont Go Away)

Bottle pouring virgin olive oil in a bowl.

Olive Oil Softens Earwax (Spain)

We need earwax because it keeps the skin inside the ear moisturized and helps prevent dirt and bacteria from reaching the inner ear. But a buildup of too much wax can form a plug, contributing to hearing loss, ringing in the ears, or dizziness. Plugs, called cerumenosis, can happen if you use cotton swabs, which push wax in, or if youre naturally prone to the buildup. It can happen especially in elderly people or those who wear hearing aids. People in many parts of the world find that a little warm oil, such as almond or olive, can soften the wax, unplugging the ear canal.Natalia Alonso, Madrid-based Readers Digest editor, says her sister-in-law, Carmen, goes to her doctor to get built-up earwax removed, but she sometimes treats it herself. On a recent beach holiday in Galicia, she noticed her hearing had diminished, and knew what the problem was, says Natalia. So she dipped a cotton swab in warm olive oil and let a little drip into her ear, and soon the clog disappeared. A University of Southampton review of 26 clinical trials found that earwax softeners are effective, and that side effects are rare. Nevertheless, its recommended you check with your doctor before attempting self-treatment of ear issues.(Related: Everything You Need to Know About Reusable Q-tips)

Manuka honey in mason jar.

Manuka Honey Helps Many Ailments (New Zealand)

For centuries the Maori community of New Zealand has relied on the bark and leaves of the manuka bushnative to New Zealand and sometimes called a tea treefor its health-giving properties. More recently, the honey made from its white or pink flowers is the star: research shows this type of honey has much higher levels of antibacterial and wound-healing compounds than others. Our whole family uses manuka honey, says Auckland-based Yulia McKenzie, who works in advertising with the New Zealand editions RD team. She says its a great-tasting way to keep the immune system healthy. We use it on waffles and cereal, and as a sugar substitute for smoothies. In winter months, Yulias family uses the honey to soothe sore throats and coughs.Research from Cardiff University showed that components of manuka honey can stimulate immune cells, increasing our ability to fight bacteria. (Its especially effective against a strain of streptococcus.) Another study showed its antimutagenic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory qualities may even help prevent or treat cancer. One small study showed that manuka honey may improve dental health. Subjects given a chewable form of the honey had a 34 per cent reduction in plaque, and a similar reduction in bleeding for those with gingivitis, compared with study participants directed to chew sugarless gum. Some people use this honey as a homemade facial mask to soften and brighten their skin. Says Julia, I use it regularly, and I must say my skin looks amazing! Check the label to make sure its genuine manuka honey from New Zealand. Labels also carry a UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) grade up to 26; the higher the number, the more healthful compounds it contains.(Related: HoneyHealth Benefits Beyond Soothing Sore Throats)

Eucalyptus essential oil in the amber bottle.

Eucalyptus Clears Sinuses (Australia)

Adele Burley uses eucalyptus oil to alleviate cold symptoms like nasal congestion. It helps clear the airways, says the Sydney-based senior art designer for RD Australia. I add a few drops to a bowl of steaming water, cover my head with a towel, and breathe in. In a randomized double-blind trial of 152 people, published in The Laryngoscope in 2009, German researchers found that the main component of eucalyptus oil1,8-cineole, or eucalyptolwas effective and safe for treating sinusitis, helping clear nasal blockages and mucus. The eucalyptus tree is native to Australia, and the oil from its leaves is similarly helpful if you have perennial allergic rhinitisa chronically stuffy or runny nose due to pet dander, mold, or dust. A South Korean study published in 2016 in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that essential oils including 1,8-cineole alleviated symptoms. Of 54 people aged 20 to 60, those who inhaled the oils for five minutes twice daily over seven days also had better sleep versus those who inhaled a placebo. Dont ingest eucalyptus oil, though, and avoid applying it directly to your skin; if its undiluted it could cause irritation.

woman sitting on wooden bench in sauna.

Sauna Boosts Circulation (Finland)

The steam sauna has been a Finnish tradition for hundreds of years, and most Finns go regularly, says Ilkka Virtanen, Helsinki-based editor of RD. Its good for heart health. A sauna is typically a room heated to between 80 degrees and 100 degrees Celsius. When a person sits sweating in a sauna, their heart rate increases, as does blood flow in the skin, boosting circulation as much as low to moderate exercise does. Risk of stroke and heart attack are reduced, according to a 2015 study of Finnish men published in JAMA Internal Medicine. That research also showed that sitting in a sauna two to three times a week lowers the risk of dying from any cause by 24 per cent. Another study showed that 15 minutes a day in a sauna five days a week may help ease mild depression.Ilkkas friend Ben, 76, credits the sauna with his good health. I go practically every day, says Ben. You feel so pure and healthy afterwards, and your soul is relaxed. If youre new to the sauna, start with five or 10 minutes; 20 minutes is the maximum. And if you have heart disease, or high or low blood pressure, speak to your doctor about whether a sauna is safe. Drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol before or during the sauna; alcohol causes further dehydration.Next: 56 Old-Time Home Remedies Weve Forgotten But Need to Bring Back ASAP

dry skin home remedies

Why is your skin so dry?

Dry skin happens to the best of us. There are many reasons why people get dry skin, says Alexander Dane, DO, of Affiliated Dermatologists & Dermatologic Surgeons, PA, in Morristown, New Jersey. Some people can inherit conditions genetically where they have a tendency to have dry, cracked skin. Others develop skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, which arent necessarily inherited, but theyre acquired,” he says.Dry skin can affect your appearance and your quality of life, including making it tough to concentrate at work and at home. These home remedies for dry, itchy skin might be just what you need. Of course, Dr. Dane reminds us that sometimes dry skin can be too severe for home remedies to work, and thats when its time to see your dermatologist.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Extra virgin olive oil

This pantry staple isnt just for cooking. When it comes to natural dry skin remedies, Dr. Dane recommends mixing a few drops of extra virgin olive oil with your moisturizer. Alternatively, he says, a thin layer of olive oil applied directly to dry skin can be used as an intensive overnight treatment; simply rinse off in your morning shower. Olive oil contains fatty acids and antioxidants that help soothe and heal dry skin.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Humidifier

Dry air can cause dry skin, according toMayo Clinic. If the air in your home is parched, try using a humidifier to add moisture to the air; it can help prevent an extremely dry face. Portable humidifiers or those that attach to a furnace can both help make your homes air less dry.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Virgin coconut oil

A 2014 study in the International Journal of Dermatology found that virgin coconut oil had positive effects on pediatric patients with atopic dermatitis, a skin disease that can cause dry and scaly skin. After using the virgin coconut oil for eight weeks, participants were less itchy and demonstrated better skin hydration than those who used a mineral oil treatment. (To make your own coconut oil moisturizer, follow this recipe.)

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Honey

Honey has both moisturizing and antimicrobial properties, Dr. Dane says. To take advantage, he recommends applying raw, organic honey to your dry skin, leaving it for 10 minutes, and then rinsing it off.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Avoid long, hot showers

A long, hot shower can wash away the stress of a busy day. But not so fast, Dr. Dane warns: This dries out skin and washes away essential oils needed to help retain moisture. Instead, try a warm shower for a shorter period of time, fewer times a week; it’s better for dry skin, he says. (Here’s more on why you might be better off showering less frequently.)

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Milk

The next time you want to take a relaxing bath, add some milk to the tub; it will help relieve dry, itchy skin. Milk contains lactic acid, which helps to exfoliate dead skin cells. Its also an anti-inflammatory, so it helps the skin retain moisture, Dr. Dane says. He recommends using whole fat cows milk or goats milk. To take a milk bath, simply use lukewarm water and add one to three gallons of milk. Soak in it for 15 minutes and be sure to rinse off afterward. If you dont want to soak your whole body in milk, Dr. Dane says you can put a washcloth in milk and then place it on the affected area for 10 minutes before rinsing it off.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Moisturize immediately after showering

If the skin on your face or body is extremely dry, chances are youre already slathering on moisturizer as often as possible. Dr. Dane says that when you put that moisturizer on is crucial. He recommends moisturizing right after you towel dry, to best lock in the moisture from your shower or bath. (FYI: This is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin.)

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Yogurt

Plain yogurt can help moisturize your skin; plus, it’s anti-inflammatory, Dr. Dane says. Apply a thin layer to dry patches and rinse it off after 10-15 minutes, he recommends.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Oats

When it comes to home remedies for dry, itchy skin, oatmeal has been around a long time. It’s not just for breakfast; oats contain specific sugars and fatty acids that lock in moisture and fight the itchiness caused by dry skin. Grind it up and add it to your bath while the water runs, have a 15-minute soak, then towel dry.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Dry brushing

A stiff bristle brush on dry winter skin might not sound pleasant, but it’s quite effective for minimizing dry skin, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Dry brush before showeringthe bristles will feel a bit rough at firstthen apply lotion after showering to lock in moisture. (Here’s more on howto take care of your skin in Canada.)

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Avocado

Smash one half on your toast and save the other half for your face: Avocado is loaded with skin-healing vitamins A and E.That’s a nutritional duo that moisturizes and protects skin from damaging UV rays. Spread the avocado on your face, massage it in, wait (while you eat your toast, for example), then rinse with warm water. Or try this DIY avocado oil scrubto help soothe dry skin.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Sesame oil

Keep a bottle of sesame oil handy. Kerri Axelrod, a certified holistic health coach in Boston, recommends a regular warm-oil massage using sesame oil to keep your skin nourished and hydrated. You can use sesame oil straight from the grocer’s shelf.

dry skin home remedies

Replace booze with cool, clear water

A good goal: drink more water. Research in 2015 inClinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology found that adding 2 liters of water to your daily diet for a month may improve skin hydration, especially if you typically don’t glug enough H20.If you find it challenging to drink enough water, check out these flavoured water recipes that are beyond refreshing.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: lavender-infused oil and honey

Give your skin some much needed TLC at the end of the day with this combo suggested by Axelrod: Mix a cup of coconut oil, two tablespoons of honey, and a few drops of lavender essential oiland rub it all over your dry skin. It will lock in moisture and hydrate your dry skin. Also, lavender essential oil has been shown to relax the mind and body, and help with sleep.(Thinking about using essential oils to fight acne? Read this first.)

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy:Vaseline

Dry-skin solutions don’t have to be expensive, say experts at Harvard Health: If you have petroleum jelly on hand, you’re all set. It can seal moisture into your skin just as efficaciously as more expensive products. After a bath, try rubbing a little bit into your hands and then onto your dry chapped areas.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: A probiotic before bed

You may know that probiotic bacteria can support a healthy environment in your gut. Now it looks like what’s good for your insides could work for your outside too: Researchin the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2014suggested that probiotics may be promising for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, but stressed that more research is needed. “Probiotics work best not taken with food so that they don’t interfere with your digestive enzymes,” says Will Cole, DC, a functional medicine practitioner in Monroeville, PA. (Here’s how to choose the right probiotics for you.)

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Paraffin dip

A dip in a warm paraffin wax bath may be just what your cracked hands and feet need. The wax helps add moisture to condition skin. Not only that, the warmth may help soothe joint pain. If you find paraffin therapy particularly soothing, you can purchase an at-home device.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Fragrance-free laundry soap

Your dry skin could be telling you to change your laundry soap and dryer sheets, according to experts at Harvard Health. Dyes and fragrances in these products are known skin irritators.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Castor oil

Grandma knew a thing or two about home remedies. Castor oil may not be sexy or trendy, but just like olive oil and coconut oil, it’s full of fatty acids. “Castor oil is great to rub into cracked cuticles and dry heels, on to chapped lips, or on any spot that needs extra moisture,” says Nadine Artemis, author of Renegade Beauty.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Hand cream

If your work bathroom is equipped with air dryers, you might want to stock a tube of this in your desk drawer. Washing your hands regularly, which you should be doing, especially in the height of cold and flu season, can keep you healthy, but it also may dry out hands. After washing and drying (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests drying hands using a clean towel or allowing them to air dry), slather on amoisturizer.

dry skin home remedies

Natural dry skin remedy: Lip balm

The skin on your lips doesn’t take up a lot of square footage, but when it becomes dry and cracked, the pain is real. Licking your lips exacerbates dryness. Dentist Aaron Mannella, a doctor of dental medicine with Pediatric Dental Associates of Randolph, NJ, advises his patients to keep a moisturizing lip balm handy and reapply as needed. (Psst: You can make this DIY lip tint with just four ingredients.)Medically reviewed byElizabeth Bahar Houshmand, MD.Next, check out the worst pieces of skin care advice dermatologists have ever heard.

harmful home remedies

Proceed with caution

Anyherbal supplement or remedy could potentially cause liver or kidney failure or have dangerous interactions with other medications you may be taking. Thats why California-based physicianEhsan Ali, MD (a.k.a. the Beverly Hills Concierge Doctor), recommends you ask your doctor before popping any herbal pill or natural cure. Allpatients of all ages should check with their doctor first about what home remedy they want to try, says Dr. Ali. Better to be safe than sorry! He warns all of his patients that most herbal supplements havent been tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and may have many potential risks and side effects.

harmful home remedies

St. Johns Wort

This herb is touted as a treatment fordepression, but comprehensive studies are lacking. Dangers can arise when patients are already taking other medications. There have been incidents of St. Johns Wort interfering with birth control pills, leading to unintended pregnancies. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health warns thatSt. Johns Wortcan disrupt the action of many medications, including warfarin, antidepressants, and anti-rejection drugs following organ transplants.

harmful home remedies

Kava

This herb, grown on South Pacific islands is often suggested foranxiety. It has been found to have a calming effect similar to Valium. Research, including a study published in 2015 in the journalTrialssuggests thatkavamay be an effective treatment for generalized anxiety disorder. However, heavy consumption of the herb is linked withheart problems and eyeirritation.

harmful home remedies

Kitchen cures for burns

Kitchen cures can seem harmless and certainly, food products can make gentle and effective beauty treatments (think: avocado or honey masks for skin and hair). But when someone has an injury or disease, natural products can do more harm than good.Svetlana Kogan, MD, a holistic physician based in Naples, Florida, has heard many potentially dangerous cures for injuries, includingapplying egg whites to burns. Egg whites, especially organic ones, can be full of bacteriaincluding salmonellawhich could lead to serious infections. Instead, minor burns can be treatedat home with cool water and acetaminophen for pain.

harmful home remedies

Gargling with mouthwash

Thecommon coldcontinues to confound doctors and there isnt much sufferers can do except stay hydrated. But when the symptoms progress to an inflamed throat, indulging in the common practice of gargling with mouthwash can do more harm than good. Gargling inflamed tonsils with mouthwash is actually very irritating to the area and does not have any effect on potentialstrep throat, says Dr. Kogan. Her Rx for a sore throat? Warm liquids to soothe the inflamed area and get plenty of rest.

harmful home remedies

Money

The best use for money when it comes to your health is paying your medical bills. But some people use currency to try and cure ailments. For years, placing a coin or other hard, flat object on a babys belly to help heal an umbilical hernia has been a common practice in many culturesa very unsafe practice: Anumbilical herniais a gap in the layer of muscle in the abdominal wall (called the rectus abdominis muscle), explainsDanelle Fisher, MD, a pediatrician in Los Angeles. The muscle usually grows together and the hernia goes away on its own in more than 90 percent of babies who are born with it. Having an object strapped to the babys belly is not advisable because it can cause a skin infection and it doesnt change the hernia or hasten its healing. (Not to mention that coins can be pretty dirty and are a choking hazard for your baby.) So what should you do if your baby has an umbilical hernia? Nothing, aside from watchful waiting and consulting with your childs pediatrician.

harmful home remedies

Breast milk

Mothers milk is the best possible natural food for babies. Although many moms claim their milk clears up skin conditions, theres no scientific proof of this, warnsSarah Yamaguchi, MD, an obstetrician and gynecologist in Los Angeles. Breast milk can transmit infectious diseases such as HIV, and if not stored properly, can be contaminated and can actually introduce bacteria into an already infected area, says Dr. Yamaguchi. Instead, she advises, patients suffering from infections or inflamed skin should try to keep the area clean and dry and seek medical attention.

harmful home remedies

Castor oil

In her work as an obstetrician, Dr. Yamaguchi has seen her fair share of women in the final stages of pregnancy who just cannot wait to have their baby. She has seen many women takecastor oilbelieving it will jump-start labor. Castor oil may help ifyou are constipatedand need to pass a bowel movement, but its not going to help you go into labor and it tastes awful, she says.

harmful home remedies

Syrup of Ipecac

This syrup, made from the roots of a South American plant, is often kept in the home by parents to act as a counter treatment foraccidental poisoning, as it induces vomiting. However, this form of treatment is incredibly dangerous, warns Dr. Fisher. Many poisons do further damage when they make their way out of the body, damaging the esophagus and potentially causing breathing problems. Dr. Fisheradvises parents not to usesyrup of ipecacat all. The only appropriate reaction to a child swallowing something poisonous, she says, is to call Poison Control immediately and seek medical treatment.

harmful home remedies

Charcoal

Some people believe thatactivated charcoal, often derived from coconut shells, is thought to trap and remove dangerous toxins from the body. It is often recommended for treating bloat and constipation. However, it is a controversial treatment. Dr. Kogan has heard of patients swallowingactivated charcoalfordetoxificationpurposes, which she strongly discourages. It is dangerous because it can cause life-threatening intestinal obstructions and severe dehydration, she says. Eating well and drinking plenty of water can have similar, but safer, detoxification effects on the body.

harmful home remedies

Blowing on or licking a wound

Parents everywhere are known for spitting on a tissue and using it to clean their childrens faces and sometimes even to clean a wound. Blowing on or introducing saliva to a cut is very dangerous. Our breath and saliva have tons of bacteria which can contaminate the wound and lead to an infection, says Dr. Kogan. Instead, use fresh water and consult a doctor if needed.

harmful home remedies

Vitamins

As long as you follow a healthy diet, youll get all the vitamins and minerals you need. Thats good because sliding into the habit of trying to make up supposed deficiencies with supplements can quickly lead to trouble, warns Dr. Kogan. The danger comes when people ignore the recommended doses and take too much of a particular vitamin.Too much vitamin D, for instance, can cause liver and heart problems, while an overabundance of B6 can lead to nerve toxicity; a vitamin A overdose can even cause death in extreme cases.Medically reviewed byOscar H. Cingolani, MD.Now that you know which harmful home remedies to steer clear of, check out these plants that have the power to treat common health conditions.

home remedies for yeast infections

What is a yeast infection?

A yeast infection occurs when theres an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans in your vagina. While it naturally lives there, too much of it triggers irritation, inflammation, itching, and discharge. Theyre uncomfortable but easily treatable and very common: Mayo Clinic estimates that three out of four women will experience a yeast infection in their lifetime. The standard course of treatment is an antifungal medication (available as creams, ointments, tablets, and suppositories). However, some natural home remedies can help lessen symptoms or prevent an infection from taking holdbut more research needs to be done to definitively support their effectiveness.(Note: Always see a doctor to confirm you have a yeast infection and not a sexually transmitted or bacterial infection, which may have similar symptoms.)

home remedies for yeast infections - yogurt

1. Yogurt

Some studies suggest that eating a daily eight-ounce serving of yogurt with live cultures or taking a Lactobacillus acidophilus capsule each day may help prevent yeast infections, or even help reduce repeat infections in people who are prone to thembut larger studies need to be done to assess exactly how effective probiotics may be at preventing or treating yeast infections. Adding in probiotics to help lower the candida load is another way of treating candida, says Taz Bhatia, MD, a board-certified integrative medicine physician and wellness expert in Atlanta, GA, and author of Super Woman RX. Try eating plain Greek yogurt without a lot of sugar, since the sweetener fuels C. albicans growth.

home remedies for yeast infections - oil

At the first signs of a urinary tract infection, your mother probably drank cranberry juice. But can a fruit really stave off a bacterial infection? Although some experts theorize that it’s really just the flushing out of the urinary tract by drinking a lot of fluid, or that the acidic environment isn’t hospitable to bacteria, there may be more to it. “Cranberry has been shown to reduce how well the bacteria stick to the lining cells of the bladder,” says Diana Bitner, MD, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Spectrum Health, although studies in women with recurrent infections have been inconsistent. The Natural Way to Heal Bruises Quickly https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/heal-bruises-naturally/ https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/heal-bruises-naturally/#comments Sun, 10 Jun 2018 13:45:59 +0000 Bruises are an inevitable part of life, but they can also be painful and unsightly. Here's what you can do to reduce the pain and encourage faster fading.

The post The Natural Way to Heal Bruises Quickly appeared first on Best Health.

]]>

What causes a bruise?

You’ve had a bump, blow, or knock to your body that was hard enough to damage small blood vessels under your skin. Blood leaks out of these blood vessels, called capillaries, and seeps into the surrounding tissue. For a while you see the traditional black-and-blue colors, which are the trademark of most bruises. As the pooled blood gradually breaks down, the colors take on a full palette of hues, from purple to green and yellow. (Here’s what the colour of your bruise actually means.) Normally, bruises will fade away in 10 to 14 days without any treatment.Though bruises eventually go away on their own, you can take steps to reduce the pain and encourage faster fading. First, reduce blood flow to the area with ice and compression to minimize discoloration. Next, use heat to boost circulation and help clear away the pooled blood. Aslong as the skin isn’t broken, a number of herbal ointments and compresses can help erase the evidence of a klutzy moment that left its mark.

Speed the healing process

Apply ice as soon as possible. If you cool the blood vessels around the bruised area, less blood will leak out into the surrounding tissue. Many flexible ice packs are available, specifically designed for injuries, and most rough-and-tumble athletes have the foresight to keep a couple of them in the freezer. If you’re not so equipped, soak a cloth in ice-cold water and lay it over the bruise for 10 minutes. Or use a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel. Take it off after 10 minutes, and wait 20 minutes or so before you reapply the ice pack so you don’t overchill the skin underneath. If you’ve bruised your arm or leg, immediately wrap an elastic bandage around the bruised part. By squeezing the tissues underneath, the bandage helps prevent blood vessels from leaking. The bruise won’t be quite as severe. Reduce blood flow to the bruise to minimize discoloration. If you bruise your leg, for instance, and you can take a time-out, settle into a couch or lounge chair with your leg up on a pillow, above heart level. If it’s your arm that’s bruised, try to keep it propped up above heart level whenever you’re sitting. Got a sports injury? Here’s a step-by-step guide to recoveryincluding how long you need to rest.

Turn up the heat

After cooling the bruise for 24 hours, start applying heat to bring more circulation to the area and help clear away the pooled blood. Use an electric heating pad for 20 minutes several times a day. Be sure to follow the instructions on the heating pad: To avoid burns, it should go on top of, not under, the bruised limb. Alternatively, you can apply a warm compress either under or over the bruised area. A hot-water bottle will work. A warm compress of comfrey can also offer comfort. Comfrey contains compounds that reduce swelling and promote the rapid growth of new cells. Make a warm herbal solution by pouring 2 cups of boiling water over 30 grams of dried comfrey leaves or 60 grams of fresh leaves. Steep for 10 minutes, then strain. This is for an external use only, so it’s not for drinking. Soak a gauze pad or a washcloth in the solution and apply it to the bruise for an hour. (Off-limits…if the skin is broken or you have an open wound.) Vinegar mixed with warm water will help the healing process. Vinegar increases blood flow near the skin’s surface, so it may help dissipate the blood that has pooled in the bruise area. Witch hazel will also do the trick.

Heal bruises with anatural rub

Arnica is an herb that has long been recommended for bruises. It contains a compound that reduces inflammation and swelling. Apply arnica ointment or gel to the bruise daily. Try Boiron Arnicare Cream, $16 at drugstores. Take a handful of fresh parsley leaves, crush them, and spread them over the bruise. Wrap the area with an elastic bandage. Some experts claim that parsley decreases inflammation, reduces pain, and can make the bruise fade more quickly. Gently rub St. John’s wort oil into the bruise. Though St. John’s wort is often taken as a capsule or tea for mild depression, the oil has long been known as a wound healer. It’s rich in tannins, astringents that help shrink tissue and control capillary bleeding. For the best effect, start this treatment soon after the bruise occurs, and repeat it three times a day. Look for vitamin K cream in the drugstore. Your body needs vitamin K to help with blood clotting. Rub it into the bruise twice a day to prevent further bleeding.

Take dietary supplements to heal bruises

Bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapples, actually ‘digests’ proteins involved in causing inflammation and inducing pain. Take 250 to 500 milligrams of bromelain daily between meals until the bruise has faded. This enzyme is also the reason pineapple helps with digestion after a meal. Use a homeopathic version of arnica. As soon as you get the bruise, start taking one dose every four hours. Take four doses the first day, then reduce your dosages to two or three pills daily as the bruise fades.

The power of prevention

If you feel like you bruise too easily, you may be deficient in vitamin C. It strengthens capillary walls so they’re less likely to leak blood and make a bruise. Get additional vitamin C by eating more peppers and citrus fruit, and take a multivitamin. Increase your intake of flavonoids by eating more carrots, apricots, and citrus fruits. These help vitamin C work better in the body. Grape-seed extract is also a rich supplier of flavonoids. Take 20 to 50 milligrams daily. People who are susceptible to bruising may be deficient in vitamin K, which you can get from broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and leafy green vegetables, as well as from supplements.Avoiding injury is just one of 10 reasons why you should be using a foam roller.

Be selective about pain relievers

Don’t reach for the aspirin bottle when you’ve just gotten a bruise, it can make things worse. Aspirin thins the blood, which means it will more easily gather under the skin and make that bruise even more alarming. The same applies to ibuprofen (found in Advil and Motrin). If you think you’re getting too many bruises and you’re also taking aspirin regularly (to reduce your risk of heart attack, for example) talk to your doctor about the problem but don’t stop taking the aspirin on your own. For pain relief, use acetaminophen, the ingredient found in Tylenol. You can also try a natural remedy for pain relief.

Should you see a doctor?

If your bruises appear mysteriously, that is, in places that you haven’t even injured, be sure to see your doctor. Sometimes bruises are the mark of serious conditions like hemophilia, leukemia, and aplastic anemia. Consult your doctor if you have a bruise at a joint and it leads to swelling, if a bruise doesn’t fade after a week, if it’s accompanied by severe pain or fever, or if you get a bruise on the side of your head over your ear (this area fractures easily). Also, there’s a gender gap at work here: Women are actually at higher risk for sports injuries.

Stomach pain is the worst here is how to deal

If you’re the type of person who keeps Rolaids in her pocket and Pepto-Bismol in her desk drawer, consider adding herbal teas to your stash to help youfeel your best. Since what we eat and drink (especially dairy products, sugar, alcohol, and coffee) often triggers conditions like gas, bloating, indigestion, heartburn, constipation, and diarrhea, how better to treat these common gastrointestinal problems, herbalists say, than by ingesting herbs that naturally offset the culprits? But with the ever growing variety of herbal teas and home remedies clogging the shelves of health food stores, it’s hard to know which ones will really help. There are numerous herbs that can affect the gastrointestinal system, according to Walter Kacera, Ph.D., an herbalist at the Apothecary Clinic in the Garden in London, Ontario. Luckily, you don’t need to buy out the entire store to get relief. Peppermint, chamomile, and ginger are the three herbs most commonly used to soothe abdominal symptoms. “They’re versatile and a good place to start,” says Jill Stansbury, N.D. (doctor of naturopathy), chair of the botanical medicine department at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Ore.Peppermint can do a lot more after dinner than just freshen your breath. The herb’s essential oil contains menthol, a volatile substance that has a direct antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscle of the digestive tract. In addition, the pleasing smell of peppermint tea may help soothe nerves (and thus a nervous stomach). The ability to calm cramping stomach and intestinal muscles makes it a superb treatment, herbalists say, for symptoms of indigestion including heartburn, gas, stomachache, and the “I ate too much” feeling. It also makes peppermint a popular alternative treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), an intestinal disorder that causes abdominal pain, bloating, and irregular bowel movements in up to 1 in 5 Canadians.Science is starting to back up some of mint’s claims. A study published in the Journal of Gastroenterology in 1997 found that IBS patients taking peppermint-oil capsules for symptom relief experienced an approximately 40 per cent greater reduction in abdominal pain and a 50 per cent greater reduction in bloating and flatulence than those patients receiving a placebo.A carminative (gas-relieving) herb, peppermint in the form of tea has long been used as a home remedy for flatulence. A 1996 German study validates this usage, finding that patients with chronic indigestion not caused by an ulcer who were treated with an herbal preparation of peppermint oil combined with caraway oil (a bitter herb also believed to relieve gastrointestinal ailments) experienced about half as much abdominal pain due to gas as did people who received a placebo.Even in the absence of abdominal symptoms, some herbalists recommend regular consumption of peppermint tea, saying it allows the entire gastrointestinal system to function more fluidly. But, despite the enthusiastic reports, many doctors say that peppermint can lower the sphincter pressure of the esophagus, actually causing some people to have more heartburn. Even Dr. Stansbury avoids treating heartburn with peppermint. If, however, people do experience relief from indigestion with peppermint or any other herbal therapy, Col. Peter McNally, D.O. (doctor of osteopathy), a gastroenterologist at the Evans Army Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., sees no harm in continuing to use the herb. “At the very least, the extra consumption of water (through the teas) can be quite helpful in aiding digestion,” he says.Chamomile, considered to be one of the safest medicinal herbs, is frequently recommended as a gentle treatment for common gastrointestinal problems. In Germany, where herbalism has long been considered conventional, tradition holds chamomile to be so useful that it has been dubbed alles zutraut, or “capable of anything.” Indeed, for gastrointestinal ailments, it’s somewhat of a superherb. Antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and carminative, chamomile can act upon the digestive system in a number of healing ways. It relieves flatulence and heartburn by mildly sedating and soothing the mucous membrane of the digestive tract. Its natural sedative properties can also relax the entire body, which may help if your digestive discomfort is caused by stress or worry.A caveat: While some research has found chamomile to be effective in relieving diarrhea in young children, Dr. Stansbury strongly cautions against self-treating diarrhea with herbal remedies (for children or adults) until you have consulted with a medical professional. “The body may be trying to rid itself of a toxin or harmful substance, and you don’t want to interrupt that process,” she advises.Though widely used and highly praised as a safe natural remedy, chamomile may cause allergic reactions in individuals with sensitivities to ragweed, asters, and chrysanthemums.Ginger, like peppermint and chamomile, is a carminative and can be used to treat gas, along with its associated bloating and pain. In botanical medicine it’s considered a warming herb, one that causes the inside of the body to generate more heat. Herbalists say this can help regulate sluggish digestion, though Dr. Stansbury points out that some find this extra warmth uncomfortable and may instead prefer peppermint or chamomile teas. But what makes ginger a standout among herbs is its effectiveness in treating nausea and vomiting. (Remember Mom giving you ginger ale when you had a stomachache?) Herbalists now know that ginger works against both nausea and vomiting, making it an excellent preventive against motion and morning sickness. And unlike its drug counterparts, ginger doesn’t cause drowsiness. Perhaps that’s why it’s a favourite in many a sailor’s first-aid kit.Teas to ease an aching stomach“Teas are the best way to take herbal gastrointestinal remedies,” says Jill Stansbury, N.D. (doctor of naturopathy), chair of the botanical medicine department at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Ore. The warm liquid is easy to digest and allow the remedy direct contact with the stomach and intestinal walls. Herbs in pill form can be hard to digest, and most tinctures contain alcohol, causing them to be absorbed largely in the mouth. The one exception: Irritable bowel syndrome sufferers may use peppermint or chamomile tea and may also take peppermint in capsule form. The capsule allows the mint to maintain its potency until it reaches the intestines, where it calms the spasms characteristic of IBS. Look for enteric-coated capsules containing .2 millilitre of oil; take one or two, up to three times a day between meals. How to choose the tea for youWhen selecting a tea, Walter Kacera, Ph.D., an herbalist at the Apothecary Clinic in the Garden, recommends looking for aromatic herbs: Can you smell the peppermint or ginger through the teabag? If not, the herb is probably past its prime. Look for a tea that has the date the herbs were harvested on the box; aromatic herbs should be less than a year old.Next time your digestive system flares up, try one of these teas:Peppermint:For a minty fresh herbal aid, the Herb Research Foundation in Boulder, Colo., recommends the following ratio of peppermint to water: Steep one to two teaspoons of dried peppermint leaves, or one tablespoon of fresh leaves, in one cup of hot water for five to 10 minutes; sweeten as needed with honey; and drink in the morning and after dinner.Chamomile:Substitute dried or fresh chamomile flowers for the peppermint leaves in the above tea preparation.Ginger:Steep to teaspoon of dried ginger root powder in one cup of hot water. Sweeten with honey and drink at night as a digestive aid, or prepare as needed to prevent motion sickness.Fresh ginger is delicious and just as effective as the dried kind. Dr. Stansbury suggests simmering three -in. peeled slices of the root in one cup of water for 10 minutes, or to desired strength. Flavour with lemon and honey. If you need immediate help on hand for your next trip to the amusement park, dried or candied ginger will also do the trick.

You do have help: Natural home remedies for anxiety

If it seems like the causes of your anxiety are all around you, take heart: So are the cures. Natural home remedies for anxiety can include even a bit of me time with the help of some things you may already have in your kitchen.Herbs and oils may help boost the soothing powers of a warm bath, worry-taming teas, and even some classic comfort foods can help calm your mind. (Here are eight nutrients you might be lacking if you’re feeling anxious.)For those times youre feeling anxious, here are some forms of kindness you owe yourself.

Soak away your cares

  • A warm bath is one of the most pleasant and reliable ways to soothe your senses. For an even better balm, add some lavender oil (or dried flowers if you have them) to the tub and soak to your hearts content. Although no one knows what gives this wonderfully scented herb its calming effect, lavender has a 2,000-year-old reputation as a calmative that soothes the nerves. No time for a bath? Dab a bit of lavender oil on your temples and forehead and sit quietly for a few minutes. (Love a good bath bomb? Here are our five faves for soothing muscles.)

Suck it in…deeply

  • Regulating your breath can help bring your anxiety under quick control. To slow and deepen your breathing, sit down, put one hand over your abdomen, and slowly inhale so that your belly expands under your hand but your shoulders do not rise. Hold your breath for four or five seconds, then very slowly exhale. Repeat until you feel calmer. (Not into meditation? Try our beginner guide and newbie tricks.)

Sip your way to serenity

  • Warm milk:An old-time remedy for insomnia, drinking a glasscan tame tension any time of day. Milk contains tryptophan, an amino acid that is needed for the production of the brain chemical serotonin, which enhances feelings of well-being.
  • Catnip, the dried herb that makes cats bizarrely hyperactive, has the opposite effect on humans. It contains chemicals that act as a mild sedative. Simply purchase catnip tea bags and enjoy a cup as often as you like.
  • Hops, which give beer its distinctive bitter flavour, have a long history as a sedative. In fact, workers who picked hops in the fields were known to suffer from unexplained sleepiness known as hop-picker fatigue. Place two teaspoons of the dried herb in a cup of very hot water. Drink up to three cups of this anti-anxiety tea a day. (Find out if you have sleep anxiety.)

Dont fuel the jitter bug

  • Limit yourself to a single cup of coffee, tea or cola drink per day. Studies suggest that people with anxiety symptoms may be more sensitive to caffeine than most people.
  • Watch your intake of wine, beer and other alcoholic drinks. While they seem to subdue anxiety at first, when the alcohol wears off, anxiety can actually heighten.

Speed up and slow down

  • Aerobic exercise is a great anxiety reliever and one of the unexpected natural home remedies for anxiety. Taking a brisk 30-minute walk spurs the release of endorphins, chemicals that block pain and improve your mood.
  • Whether its meditating, praying,do some sort of meditative activity for 15 minutes several times a day. Deeply focusing your attention on the moment at hand steers your mind away from anxious thoughts.

Check out the pharmacy for natural home remedies for anxiety

  • Valerian is not apleasant smellingherb, but if you want relief from anxiety, you might forgive the odour. Research suggests that the active ingredients in valerian attach to the same receptors in the brain that are affected by the anti-anxiety drug diazepam. Take 250 milligrams twice a day and 250 to 500 milligrams before bedtime. Find out more about this natural anxiety herb.
  • 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) can replenish your supply of serotonin, an anxiety-calming brain chemical. The 5-HTP in your body comes from the amino acid tryptophan, but small quantities are also found in the seeds of griffonia, a tree grown mostly in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. Supplements of 5-HTP are made from extract of the Griffonia or produced synthetically. In Canada, 5-HTP is a drug and it has not been approved for sale, though Canadians may import it into the country for personal use (defined as a three-month supply). Take 50 milligrams three times daily with meals. But consult your doctor if youre also taking an antidepressant such as Prozac, Paxil, or Zoloft. These drugs also affect serotonin receptors, and the combined effect could be dangerous.
  • B-complex multivitamin daily may help. Studies show that the Bs are natural stress-reducers the body requires vitamin B6 to make serotonin, for example and not getting enough of them can contribute to anxiety.

Anxiety may also be triggered by where you live. Find out if you are making these mistakes at home.

Relieve carpal tunnel, woman holding her wrist

Find relief for carpal tunnel syndrome with these natural remedies

Sick and tired of suffering from sore hands and wrists? A natural remedy to relieve carpal tunnel syndrome may be just what you need!Inside each wrist is a narrow passage called the carpal tunnel. Running through this tunnel are nine tendons that move your fingers, along with the median nerve. These tendons can become inflamed and swell, compressing the nerve.Repetitive hand motion is one well-known cause of carpal tunnel syndrome, but other factors include pregnancy, birth-control pills, rheumatoid arthritis, and being overweight.Give these natural home remedies a try to relieve your carpal tunnel.

Relieve Carpal Tunnel. Woman with ice pack

How can I relieve carpal tunnel?

To quickly ease the pain and inflammation caused by carpal tunnel syndrome, cool your wrists with an ice pack and wrap it in a thin towel. Leave it on for about 10 minutes and if you feel the need, repeat the treatment every hour or so.Heat can also ease pain by relaxing muscles. Soak your hands and wrists in warm to hot water for 12 to 15 minutes before you go to bed each night.Wear a splint at night. While sleeping, you may be bending your hand and wrist under your pillow, which puts pressure on your wrist. In fact, people with carpal tunnel syndrome are often awakened by the pain. A splint will hold your fingers in a neutral position and relieve pressure on the median nerve. You can purchase the splint in a medical supply store or pharmacy, but be sure to check with your doctor or physical therapist to make sure it fits properly. You may also want to wear a splint during the day, especially if youre doing jobs that require a lot of hand motion.

Relieve carpal tunnel, flaxseed oil

How to treat carpal tunnel

Twice a day, rub your wrists with an ointment containing arnica. This herbal treatment, renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, helps ease aches and pains. Dab the inside of each wrist with about one-quarter teaspoon of the ointment, then massage that area with the thumb of the other hand, all the way to the base of your palm. Repeat every morning and night until your symptoms ease.Bromelain, an enzyme derived from pineapples, digests inflammatory proteins, so it can reduce inflammation in your sore wrists. Along with reducing the pain, it may help you heal faster. The herb St. Johns wort, best known as an antidepressant, can also help repair nerve damage and reduce carpal tunnel syndrome pain and inflammation.Take a tablespoon of flaxseed oil every day, and give it at least two weeks to have an effect. Flaxseed oil is extremely rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation. Take it with food for better absorption. If youd like, you can mix it into your orange juice or add it to your salad dressing.Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory component found in the spice turmeric. In Ayurvedic medicine, which originated in India, turmeric has a long history of use as a medicine for pain and inflammation. But the spice doesnt pack the punch of curcumin supplements.Try elemental magnesium. This trace mineral is involved in nerve function and muscle relaxation. A supplement may help relieve carpal tunnel syndrome, especially if you dont eat a lot of magnesium-rich whole grains, legumes or green vegetables. The most absorbable forms are magnesium lactate, magnesium orotate, magnesium glycinate and magnesium gluconate. The only side effect might be loose bowel movements. If you have that problem, just reduce the dose.

Yeast Infection Cures For a Happy, Healthy Vagina https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/the-best-remedies-for-yeast-infections/ https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/the-best-remedies-for-yeast-infections/#comments Tue, 18 Jul 2017 16:00:18 +0000 Clear up an itchy, uncomfortable yeast infection with these over-the-counter remedies.

The post Yeast Infection Cures For a Happy, Healthy Vagina appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
Sooner or later, three out of four women will get a vaginal yeast infection, a condition characterized by itching, irritation and discharge. “[It is] caused by an overgrowth of yeast,” says Dr. Barbara Romanowski, a clinical professor in the department of medicine at the University of Alberta.”There are normally hundreds of different kinds of bacteria and yeast in the vagina, but when that balance is disrupted, you get an infection.”Sufferers can experience itching both inside the vagina and on the outer labia; a burning sensation (especially during sex or urination); redness and swelling of the vulva; and an abnormal vaginal discharge (usually thick and white or yellow in colour).Antibiotics, steroid medications, chronic stress and a diet high in sugar and processed foods can make a woman susceptible to yeast overgrowth, says Carrie Watkins, a naturopathic doctor based in Victoria. The use of hormone therapies such as oral contraceptives or hormone replacement, and even regular monthly hormonal fluctuations, can also be triggers.”Many women experience an increase in incidence or a worsening of symptoms in the week before getting their periods,” says Watkins.

Preventing your yeast infection

Douching can also disturb the normal bacteria and cause an infection. And it is possible, though extremely rare, to contract the condition from a male sexual partner. (However, men can develop balinitism, an irritation of the head of the penis, after contact with yeast, and should seek treatment.)Of the 75 percent of females who get a yeast infection, five to 10 percent will experience chronic episodes. Type 2 diabetes, especially if it’s poorly controlled, or an impaired immune system are the most likely factors.Otherwise, good genital hygiene is the best prevention, says Romanowski. More tips to remember:

  1. Avoid douching or the use of potentially irritating feminine hygiene sprays, bubble baths, soaps or laundry detergents with strong fragrances.
  2. Choose underwear made from breathable, natural fabrics such as cotton, and don’t wear it to bed or sit for long periods in tight-fitting clothing.
  3. After a bowel movement, wipe from front to back: If fecal bacteria gets into the vagina, it can disrupt the natural balance of yeast to bacteria.

Although a yeast infection can be uncomfortable, “there are no risks if you leave it and let it run its course without treatment,”says Romanowski. “For most women, it will just go away.'”But if you want symptom relief, and you’ve had one before and are familiar with the symptoms, then it’s safe to take one of these over-the-counter remedies for up to seven days.If you are pregnant, aren’t sure if you have a yeast infection or have never had symptoms before, then you should seek medical advice. Since the symptoms are similar to bacterial vaginosis and some sexually transmitted infections, it’s important to get a correct diagnosis. Also, check in with your doctor if the infection persists.

  • Monistat 3 Ovule Therapy
  • Canesten 1 Day Cream
  • Clotrimaderm Vaginal Cream 1%
  • London Drugs Clotrimazole

How they work: Monistat contains the active ingredient miconazole. Canesten, Clotrimaderm and London Drugs Clotrimazole all contain clotrimazole.”The mechanism of action is the same’they are antifungals that kill the yeast and stop it from multiplying,” says Pindy Janda, assistant pharmacy manager at London Drugs in North Delta, B.C. Both types of medications are available in ovule or cream format.”Ovules are capsules that come with an applicator, similar to a tampon, to help you insert them high into the vagina,” says Janda. The creams also come with an applicator for insertion into the vagina, and can also be applied around the labia to calm external itching. Both Monistat and Canesten sell combination treatment kits containing ovules for internal symptoms and creams for external relief.Need to know: Miconazole and clotrimazole products are available in one, three, six, and seven-day formats.Which one you choose depends on the severity of symptoms. For a mild yeast infection, a treatment course of one to three days may be appropriate, but for stubborn or recurrent infections, go for a longer duration of therapy.Although symptom relief may start sooner, it takes any formula at least three days to rid your body of the infection, says Janda.Whether you choose an ovule or a cream, always insert it at bedtime. Remember that the higher it goes up into the vagina, the better the results. You may have discharge during the day, so wear a panty liner and change it regularly (if you are menstruating, use pads instead of tampons).Although you can have sex while using these products, it may be painful, and the medications may damage condoms and diaphragms. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have an allergy to topical products that contain these ingredients, check with your doctor before using them.

Oral treatments

Examples:

  • CanesOral
  • London Drugs Fluconazole

How they work: Available as a single-dose treatment, fluconazole (the active ingredient in both products) is an oral medication that works similarly to miconazole and clotrimazole. However, “because it is taken orally, it gets processed by the liver and put into the bloodstream, where it recognizes the fungus and kills it,” says Janda.Need to know: Although you ingest only one tablet, it takes three days for fluconazole to counter the infection, with symptom relief starting after the first 24 hours. For faster relief, use it in conjunction with a topical miconazole or clotrimazole cream. If symptoms persist, do not repeat treatments without consulting your doctor. This medication can be taken with or without food, although you should take it with a meal if you have a sensitive stomach.Don’t use fluconazole if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and check with your pharmacist or physician first if you are taking other medications.

Probiotic treatments

Examples:

  • Provacare Pro-biotic Vaginal Care Ovules
  • Bio-K+ Original Fermented Milk Pro-biotic
  • Culturelle Digestive Health
  • HMF CandiGen Suppositories
  • New Chapter Probiotic FlorAll
  • Renew Life Ultimate Flora Vaginal Support Probiotic
  • RepHresh Pro-B

How they work: The bacteria naturally present in the vagina are called lactobacillus and, according to Watkins, women who are prone to yeast infections, are using antibiotics or have a compromised immune system may benefit from supplementation with this ingredient to restore the vagina’s bacteria-yeast balance and prevent infections.”The healthy bacteria help control yeast as well as create a slightly acidic environment in the vagina, which is less hospitable to yeast.”Provacare and HMF CandiGen are vaginal ovules that contain lactobacillus bacteria, while Culturelle, New Chapter, Renew Life and RepHresh Pro-B are oral supplements that contain lactobacillus. Bio-K+ is a lactobacillus-based fermented milk drink.Need to know: “There are no studies to prove [that probiotic] treatments are effective, but I’ve seen a number of patients who swear by them,” says Romanowski. Since supplements and beverages are free of side effects, it may be safely used with other treatments or for preventive purposes.Make sure to refrigerate them to ensure the potency of the live cultures. If you decide to use an ovule format, insert it before bedtime. Also be sure to wear panty liners during the daytime.”It often takes a minimum of seven days to see results [from these suppository preparations],” says Watkins. It can take longer to see results with oral supplements depending on factors such as a person’s overall health. Consult with your doctor before repeating a course of treatment.

Natural remedies

Add baking soda to your bath to take away the itch, says Romanowski. Apply natural, unsweetened yogurt to the labia; it may help to relieve itch and irritation, advises Watkins. As well, you can ask a naturopathic doctor about oral herbal antifungal preparations such as garlic, grapefruit seed extract and caprylic acid, which can provide additional support for the immune system. Boric acid suppositories (recommended only for women with chronic yeast infections) are also a natural approach to controlling yeast.

Feel better fast

You may be joyfully embracing the notion that a new life is growing inside you, but your body seems to be doing anything but. Considering how queasy you’re feeling, you have a perfect right to mutter a few unprintable words and snap at your significant other now and then. But you also have a right to some relief. When your stomach feels like it’s riding the seven seas, try these strategies to calm, soothe, and settle. But first, check with your doctor before ingesting any home remedy while you’re pregnant.

morning_sickness_herbal_tea

Try herbal tea

Nothing beats morning sickness like a cup of ginger tea. The same spicy herb is used to counter motion sickness. To make ginger tea, boil 30 grams dried root (available in health-food stores) in 1 cup water for 15 to 20 minutes, strain, and sip. Herbal teas made with lemon balm, and peppermint are also known to reduce nausea. Use 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried herb per cup of hot water. Avoid peppermint tea if you have heartburn, however. Brew yourself a cup of red raspberry-leaf tea. The herb is popular for a number of pregnancy problems, including morning sickness, and has been shown to relax the smooth muscles of the uterus. Use 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried herb per cup of hot water. But with this remedy in particular, check with your doctor before taking it. There is some evidence that raspberry leaf can cause uterine contractions, so your doctor might advise against taking it later in the pregnancy or if you’re at increased risk for miscarriage. And if you’re worried about drinking other herbal teas during pregnancy, don’t be. Tara Anchel, a registered naturopathic doctor based in Ottawa and member of the Naturopathic Doctor’s Association of Canada, says peppermint, lemon-balm and ginger tea are safe to drink while pregnant and she recommends them to her patients to relieve the symptoms of morning sickness. She explains it this way:”The essential oil of some of these herbs is contraindicated during pregnancy, but there is a very low concentration of these oils in tea. The concentration is so low that it is safe. When you soak an herb in hot water, you’re only extracting the water-soluble components of the plant. As well, essential oils evaporate very quickly. When you have a steaming cup of tea, the first thing to evaporate is the essential oil.” These two facts combined mean that it’s safe for naturopathic doctors to recommend these herbal teas to pregnant women. As with anything you plan to eat or drink during pregnancy, it’s best to check with your own healthcare provider to determine what’s best for you and your baby.

fennel_seeds

Spices that soothe

Drink flat, room-temperature ginger ale to settle your stomach. Although no one knows why (there’s not enough ginger in commercial ginger ale to have an effect), it works for many nauseated moms-to-be. Don’t drink ginger ale with fizz, though. The bubbles promote the production of more stomach acid-just what you don’t need. Chew on anise or fennel seeds, which are known to soothe upset stomachs.

vitamin_b

Boost your B intake

In studies, women who took 25 milligrams of vitamin B6 three times a day (a total of 75 milligrams per day) for three days reduced nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy. As with other vitamins, if you’re pregnant, don’t take B6 without your doctor’s consent.

water_glass

Hydrate

Water is the best medicine! Amazing as it seems, women who drink a glass of water every hour have a lot less morning sickness. Also, drink a glass of water every time you get up in the night to go to the bathroom. This helps ensure you start your day feeling as good as you can. Peek at the toilet water before you flush. If you are drinking enough water, urine should be almost clear. If it’s dark, sinks to the bottom, or has an extra-strong smell, you need to drink more. If nothing wants to stay down, treat yourself to a frozen-fruit bar. It helps replace sugars lost through vomiting. And since a fruit bar is made with frozen water, it also helps keep you hydrated.

lemon

Refresh with citrus

Sniff a slice of lemon. Some pregnant women report that, for unknown reasons, it helps with morning sickness. You might also try drinking water with lemon or another lemon-based drink. Grate a bit of grapefruit, orange, or tangerine rind and add it to your tea.

crackers

Don’t get hungry

In the morning, you might be able to prevent nausea by putting something in your stomach before you even get out of bed. Keep some crackers by your bed and have a few as soon as you wake up. Eat a number of small meals throughout the day. Small amounts of food are much easier to tolerate than a large meal. In fact, you might want to have a snack every hour or two, keeping the servings small. Peanut butter on apple slices, a few nuts, or a slice or two of cheese are all good choices. Take your prenatal vitamins with food to help them stay down. Even a saltine cracker or wheat thin can help. Avoid fried, fatty foods, which tend to cause and intensify the nausea. It’s not known why-perhaps because fatty foods are digested more slowly.

toothbrush

Avoid your triggers

If you’re extremely sensitive to odors during this time, try to stay in well-ventilated rooms that don’t accumulate cooking odours or cigarette smoke. It’s okay to ask your partner to brush his teeth more often to help you avoid nausea due to bad breath! This sensitivity usually passes by the twelfth to fourteenth week…so you’re not going to be finicky forever.

Spice or supplement? How ginger is used

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is not only a popular culinary ingredient, it is also widely used for medicinal purposes. Today, ginger’s strongest, research-backed claim to fame is its ability to soothe nausea in many guises’motion sickness, morning sickness, stomach upsets and nausea due to chemotherapy. Some preliminary research also supports its long-time use as an anti-inflammatory ache-easer. Traditionally ginger was used to treat chills, arthritis and migraines and may in the future be used as treatment for post-surgery nausea.

Ginger for morning sickness: is it safe?

Morning sickness affects up to 85 percent of women during the first 3 months of pregnancy. It’s been proven that ginger can help, and’good news’herbal medicine experts at Bastyr University, near Seattle in the United States, say it’s safe to take at recommended doses during pregnancy.

How to take ginger medicinally

Ginger comes in many forms. You can make a tea by steeping 1 teaspoon (5 milligrams) of grated fresh ginger in boiling water; then train and sweeten.

Alternately, you can take ginger as a supplement in the form of capsules of dried ginger. Follow dosage directions; experts suggest 250 milligrams 4 times daily to quell nausea.

Another option is to chew candied ginger; a 1-inch (2.5-centimetre) piece is equivalent to about 500 to 1000 milligrams of dried ginger.

How does it work?

What is responsible for this root’s digestive-system-soothing powers? When researchers at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom reviewed the evidence in 2000, they concluded that an active compound called 6-gingerol plays a starring role by relaxing muscles along the gastrointestinal tract. In 2011, in a laboratory study at the Pharmacy Institute at the Free University of Berlin, in Germany, scientists found that gingerols and shogaols from ginger bind to receptors on cells in the small intestine’blocking the action of nausea-inducing chemicals produced by the body, such as serotonin. Fresh ginger root is preferable to dried ginger, as it contains higher levels of the active compound 6-gingerol.

Modern research and studies on ginger as a remedy for nausea

Imagine trying to hold onto your breakfast as your chair spins on one leg’so it’s not just revolving, but also tilting up and down in wobbly circles. And you’re blindfolded! That’s what 36 stalwart volunteers did for a noteworthy 1982 Pennsylvania State University study that helped establish ginger’s beneficial effects against motion sickness. Researcher Daniel B Mowrey found that capsules of dried, powdered ginger worked better than the popular motion-sickness remedies that use dimenhydrinate as the active ingredient, such as Dramamine and Gravol.

In 2003, research conducted at the University of Michigan confirmed ginger’s benefits’this time courtesy of 13 volunteers who ate cheese-and-bacon sandwiches then sat inside a spinning barrel painted with nausea-inducing black-and-white stripes! In this study, 1000 to 2000 milligrams of dried ginger root, in capsules, reduced nausea by about 40 percent; afterwards, nausea levels fell twice as fast’in 5 minutes rather than 10’in the ginger group compared with those taking a placebo.

In a 2005 review of 7 morning-sickness studies, ginger significantly reduced nausea and vomiting in pregnant women. Six of the studies followed the women until they gave birth and found ginger did not increase risk for birth defects, did not shorten pregnancy, or cause any serious side effects for mothers-to-be (though some burped a little more often!).

And that’s not all. In a 2011 study at the University of Rochester, 644 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy took capsules containing ginger or a placebo twice a day for 6 days’starting 3 days before chemotherapy treatment. Those who received ginger had significantly less nausea.

Ginger boosted sluggish digestion by 25 percent in a 2011 study by Taiwan’s Chang Gung University College of Medicine.

Some of ginger’s time-honoured uses also have real science behind them. In India, the root is considered a useful anti-inflammatory against arthritis. In several case studies, including a1992 report on 56 people with arthritis or muscle aches from Denmark’s Odense University, those who took ginger supplements regularly for three months or more reported a significant easing of pain.

Ginger has a reputation in Asia as a drying, warming herb that can chase the chills of a cold or flu. In one 1991 lab study reported by Japan’s Hokkaido Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, an extract containing gingerols boosted body temperature in animals by 33°F (0.5°C) within half an hour.

Natural Home Remedies: Asthma https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/natural-home-remedies-asthma/ https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/natural-home-remedies-asthma/#comments Sat, 23 May 2015 21:18:03 +0000 Asthma is serious and should be discussed with your doctor. But there are also home remedies you can try to reduce the severity and frequency of your attacks, and to help manage your symptoms when they happen.

The post Natural Home Remedies: Asthma appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
natural_home_remedies_asthmaSource: Adapted from 1,801 Home Remedies, Reader’s DigestAn asthma attack can occur when an irritant – usually a common substance like smoke, cold or dry air, pollen, mold, or dust mites – meets a set of temperamental lungs. Hormonal fluctuations, stress, and anger can also trigger an attack. Sometimes there’s no apparent cause. Your difficulty in breathing occurs because the bronchi, the tubes that allow oxygen into your lungs, go into spasms. Accompanying them may be coughing and tightness in the chest. The spasms trigger the release of histamine and other chemicals that cause inflammation and the production of airway-clogging mucus. For severe asthma attacks – the kind of tightness, wheezing, and shortness of breath that can be really frightening – most people do just what the doctor recommends. Often, that means quick action with an inhaler containing a drug such as albuterol. If that’s what you use, and it works, don’t give it up. And always have your doctor’s telephone number near at hand in case of severe attacks. But for non-emergencies, you’ll want to figure out ways to help yourself breathe easy.

Breathe easier right now

When an asthma attack comes on, stay calm. Panic can make your symptoms worse. Help yourself along with this visualization trick: Close your eyes. As you inhale, see your lungs expand and fill with white light, and feel your breathing become easier. Repeat this exercise twice more, then open your eyes. In a pinch, have a strong cup of coffee or two 355-mL cans of caffeinated cola. Caffeine is chemically related to theophylline, a standard medication for asthma. It helps open airways.

Natural remedies for asthma

Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine have been using the herb ginkgo to treat asthma for centuries. If you want to try it, take 60 to 250 milligrams of standardized ginkgo extract once a day. One recent study suggests that this herb interferes with a protein in the blood that contributes to airway spasms. Magnesium may make you feel better. Much research suggests that magnesium relaxes the smooth muscles of the upper respiratory tract. The recommended dose is 600 milligrams a day.

Help asthma by fighting inflammation

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish such as tuna, salmon, and mackerel, work much like a class of asthma drugs called leukotriene inhibitors. These drugs stop the actions of body compounds that cause inflammation in the airways. Take six 1,000-milligram capsules a day in divided doses. Evening primrose oil is rich in an essential fatty acid called GLA, which is converted by the body into anti-inflammatory substances. Take two 500-milligram capsules three times a day. Take them with meals to avoid stomach upset. Bioflavonoids, the compounds that give fruits and vegetables their Technicolor hues, have powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties. One of the best-known bioflavonoids, quercetin, inhibits the release of histamine. Take 500 milligrams of quercetin three times a day, 20 minutes before meals. Turmeric, that yellow cooking spice used to flavor Indian curry dishes, is a first-rate anti-inflammatory. The compounds it contains inhibit the release of COX-2 prostaglandins, hormone-like substances involved in inflammation. Mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder in a cup of warm milk and drink this up to three times a day. Turmeric capsules and tinctures are also available.

Keep a record

In a date book, make a note of everything you eat for a month. Also record your asthma symptoms. While food allergies are rarely associated with asthma, occasionally there is a connection. Check your diary against your symptoms to see if anything you’re eating increases the frequency or severity of your attacks. If you take asthma medication, get a peak-flow meter, available at drugstores. This gadget measures the speed at which air leaves your lungs – an indication of how well you’re breathing. By reading your ‘peak flow’ at certain times, you can tell how well a medication or remedy is working. You can also use it during an attack to determine its severity and decide whether you need emergency care.

Prevent asthma attacks by avoiding triggers

Don’t smoke, and stay away from people who do. Cigarette smoke irritates the airways. Don’t huddle around a fireplace or wood-burning stove. In cold weather, wrap a scarf around your nose and mouth to help warm frigid air before you inhale it. Be alert for unusual asthma triggers, such as strong-scented foods or the intensely perfumed sample strips bound into magazines, and do what you can to avoid them. Try eating smaller, more frequent meals, and don’t eat before you go to bed. The upward migration of stomach acids that cause heartburn can also trigger asthma attacks.

About 5 percent of people with asthma are allergic to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin and ibuprofen. For these people, taking the drugs can trigger an attack. If you are one of them, use an aspirin-free pain reliever like acetaminophen (Tylenol) instead.

When home remedies aren’t enough

Should you call your doctor? Yes, if you develop asthma symptoms for the first time. If you’re already being treated for asthma, you probably have medication that you take at the onset of an episode. Even so, call your doctor if you notice you’re using your medication more often, or if your symptoms worsen even after you take it. Get someone to take you to the emergency room if you can’t speak without gasping for breath, develop a bluish cast to your face or lips, find it extremely difficult to breathe, or become confused or exhausted.

Deep breathing to reduce anxiety

This simple deep-breathing trick can help reduce the severity and frequency of your asthma attacks. When an attack starts, you naturally become more anxious as it gets harder to breathe. This produces a ‘clenching’ response that can further restrict your airways. But if you’ve practiced this breathing technique ahead of time, you can use it to help yourself breathe more freely. Lie on your back on a carpet or mat and place a book on your stomach. Inhale gently and deeply, but not by expanding your chest. Instead, expand your abdomen. Keep an eye on the book. If it rises up, you’re breathing the right way. Just when you think you’ve reached full capacity, take in a little more air. See if you can raise the book a little higher. Exhale gradually, slowly counting to five. The more you exhale, the more relaxed you’ll feel. Repeat at least five times.Don’t miss out! Natural Home Remedies: Toothache https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/natural-home-remedies-toothache/ https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/natural-home-remedies-toothache/#comments Fri, 15 May 2015 11:34:52 +0000 Toothache is at the top of the list for not-a-fun-time, but there are some natural remedies you can use to relieve the pain before you make it to the dentist

The post Natural Home Remedies: Toothache appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
home remedies toothacheSource: Adapted from 1,801 Home Remedies, Reader’s DigestCavities often cause tooth pain, and you get cavities from bacteria in the mouth that are thriving on sugary and starchy foods that cling to teeth and gums. The bacteria produce acids that damage your teeth, and when the damage reaches a nerve, misery sets in. But there can be other causes as well- filling that’s come loose, a cracked tooth, an abscess (a pocket of infection at the gum line), or a sinus condition. Any infection that reaches the root is sure to cause pain.Toothaches range from throbbing to excruciating, but with a good dentist as your ally, the pain should be short-lived. If you can’t get an appointment right away, you can stop at the pharmacy for a pain-relieving gel. For general pain relief, you can also take aspirin or acetaminophen (Tylenol). And try the following approaches.

Natural remedies for toothache

Dab some clove oil directly on your bad tooth. Clove oil has remarkable bacteria-slaying properties-and it also has a numbing effect, which is why it’s a longtime folk remedy for toothache. Today we know that this extract from the clove bud contains eugenol, which acts as a local anesthetic. The oil may sting at first, but then blissful relief sets in. You can get the same numbing effect from whole cloves. Put a few in your mouth, let them moisten until they soften, bruise them a bit between your non-hurting molars to release their oil, then hold the softened cloves against your painful tooth for up to half an hour. If you don’t have any cloves, make a paste of powdered ginger and red (cayenne) pepper. Pour the powdered ingredients in the bottom of a cup, then add a drop or two of water to make the paste. Roll a small ball of cotton into enough paste to saturate it, and place it on your painful tooth. (This can irritate the gums, so keep the cotton on the tooth.) In addition to using the spices together, you can try them separately. Either one can help relieve tooth pain. Rinse your mouth with a tincture of myrrh. The astringent effects help with inflammation, and myrrh offers the added benefit of killing bacteria. Simmer 1 teaspoon of powdered myrrh in 2 cups water for 30 minutes. Strain and let cool. Rinse with 1 teaspoon of the solution in a half-cup water five to six times a day. Peppermint tea has a nice flavour and some numbing power. Put 1 teaspoon dried peppermint leaves in 1 cup boiling water and steep for 20 minutes. After the tea cools, swish it around in your mouth, then spit it out or swallow. Repeat as often as needed. To help kill bacteria and relieve some discomfort, swish with a mouthful of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. This can provide temporary relief if the toothache is accompanied by fever and a foul taste in the mouth (both are signs of infection), but like other toothache remedies, it’s only a stopgap measure until you see your dentist and get the source of infection cleared up. A hydrogen peroxide solution is only for rinsing. Spit it out, then rinse several times with plain water. Stir a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and rinse for up to 30 seconds before you spit it out. Salt water cleanses the area around the tooth and draws out some of the fluid that causes swelling. Repeat this treatment as often as needed. Place a small ice cube in a plastic bag, wrap a thin cloth around the bag, and apply it to the aching tooth for about 15 minutes to numb the nerves. Alternatively, that ice pack can go on your cheek, over the painful tooth. A warm, wet tea bag is a standard folk remedy for toothache that’s worth a try. Black tea contains astringent tannins, which may reduce swelling and give you temporary relief. Use a toothpaste that’s designated ‘for sensitive teeth.’ If you have a problem with shrinking gums, this could relieve a lot of the pain you probably experience from hot or cold foods. When gums shrink, the dentin beneath your teeth’s enamel surface is exposed, and this material is particularly sensitive. Switch to the softest-bristled brush you can find to help preserve gum tissue and prevent further shrinking. If you’ve broken a tooth or have lost a filling, you can relieve some pain by covering the exposed area with softened chewing gum. This might work with a loose filling, too, to hold it in place until you can get to the dentist. To avoid further discomfort, avoid chewing anything with that tooth until you can have it repaired. Try an acupressure technique to stop tooth pain fast. With your thumb, press the point on the back of your other hand where the base of your thumb and your index finger meet. Apply pressure for about two minutes. This helps trigger the release of endorphins, the brain’s feel-good hormones. (Off-limits if you’re pregnant.)

The bottom line for tooth pain

Whatever else you do, make an appointment to see your dentist. These home remedies can provide temporary relief, but your dentist needs to do some exploration and find out what’s causing this toothache. Odds are, you have a problem that requires treatment. If you don’t find out what’s causing the ache, it will only get worse.

Ditch the chemical syrups

Chemical-laden cold and flu syrups leave much to be desired. In fact, according to Leslie Solomonian, naturopathic doctor and assistant professor at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, studies have demonstrated that over-the-counter cough and cold remedies for kids are actually potentially harmful and no better in addressing symptoms than homemade syrups prepared with honey. Here’s how you can whip up your own all-natural cough and cold-fighting mixtures.

honey cough syrup

1. Honey, onion and garlic syrup

The mixture:
Combine a half-cup of honey and a half-cup of water. Add in one whole chopped onion and one chopped clove of garlic. Add a dash of sage, thyme or oregano and allow to steep overnight at room temperature. Strain and use the liquid as a cough syrup. Store in your refrigerator.

Why it works:
Honey, onion and garlic are all naturally antimicrobial, says Dr. Solomonian. “Honey also acts as a demulcent, meaning it relaxes the cough reflex and soothes the throat.” Not cooking the mixture helps preserve the full antimicrobial properties of the onions and garlic, which lose some of their potency when heated. Finally, herbs like sage, thyme or oregano add even more antimicrobial benefits.

Tip:
If you can’t wait overnight for your syrup to steep, simmer the mixture for five to 10 minutes until the onions soften. Although you’ll lose some antimicrobial properties, you will get some relief before heading to bed.

2. Castor oil chest rub

2. Castor oil chest rub

The mixture:
Start with a half a cup of good quality, cold pressed castor oil. Crush one or two cloves of garlic and stir them into the oil. Add a tablespoon of freshly grated ginger, three or four drops of eucalyptus oil and about half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Rub on chest.

Why it works:
Castor oil is well absorbed by the body and helps to increase circulation, which stimulates our immune response. The ginger and cayenne pepper also help warm the body, stimulate circulation and dilute mucus. The garlic and eucalyptus oil are added for their antimicrobial properties.

Tip:
“This is a very messy paste,” warns Dr. Solomonian. She recommends putting on an old T-shirt directly over the chest rub and wearing your pajamas over that. The extra layer will help trap added warmth.

3. Horseradish syrup

3. Horseradish syrup

The mixture:
Add a dash of grated horseradish to a quarter cup of honey. Allow it to sit for a few hours then use as a cough syrup.

Why it works:
“Horseradish promotes perspiration, making it useful in the treatment of fever,” says Dr. Jean-Jacques Dugoua, naturopathic doctor and director of clinical pharmacology forNewtopia. “When mixed with honey, it can be an effective remedy for hoarseness and cough from colds and flu.” Horseradish also stimulates appetite and promotes digestion. However, just a small amount does the trick. Eating large amounts may cause stomach upset.

Tip:

Although you may be tempted to add essential oils to a homemade cough syrup, it’s best to stick with whole foods as ingredients. Essential oils are very concentrated and can be very hard on the liver if ingested. Instead, reap the antimicrobial benefits of essential oils by adding them to a steam inhalation. Simply boil water, add in a few drops of the essential oil of your choice, place a towel over your head and breathe deeply. This will help dilute mucus and clear the nasal passages.

cold flu sick

What do you do when cold season strikes?

When you’re feeling under the weather, sometimes all you want to do is curl up on the couch with a fluffy duvet, a bowl of hot soup and a soothing cup of tea. But those aren’t the only solutions to coping with cold and flu. From supplements to homemade remedies from the kitchen cupboard, we’ll try just about anything to kick sickness to the curb.

We asked our readers to share their go-to home remedies for colds and flu. Here are some of the tips submitted to Best Health via Twitter and Facebook. Have some great advice of your own? Share it with us in the comments below!

relaxation drinks

Try a cold-busting drink recipe

Not a fan of tea? Facebook user Brenda Farrell suggests this soothing substitute: “Honey in hot water, add freshly squeezed lemon juice and drink slowly-and often!”

Also on Facebook, Kamelia Rahmatzadeh suggests: “A hot organic honey, ginger, lemon, zinc, vitamin D (1000 IUs per serving), vitamin C, lemon balm, elderberry and echinacea drink. Is it ever delicious!”

Over on Twitter, @elliotte suggests a drink of ginger root in hot water with lemon, and @TheHealthyApple opts for ginger tea with orange slices for a healty vitamin boost.

more spices

Add a dash of healthy herbs

“For an unsettled stomach, take a teaspoon of ground, powdered ajwain seeds. Don’t chew it because it burns, just pop it in the mouth and wash it down with some water,” says Facebook user Naveen A. Grewal. “Works every time!”

Another popular remedy in the Best Health online community is oil of oregano. Facebook user Jill Taylor and Twitter follower @JessicaSquibb both suggest this remedy-which is used for preventing colds as well as treating them.

Vitamins

Vitamins and supplements could help, too

While there is no magic pill to cure you of a cold or flu, boosting your immune system with vitamins and supplements may be helpful. “My cold remedy is soup (vegetarian harira), echinacea, vitamin C, and power yoga!” says @Katie_Princess3, via Twitter.

Facebook user Ruth Heckbert recommends echinacea with goldenseal, while Karen Bradley says, “Prevention is better-take garlic capsules daily.” Another go-to solution in Best Health’s online community-immune-boosting Cold-FX.

Before you head to the pharmacy to stock up on herbal remedies, check with your healthcare provider to make sure that any vitamins or supplements you may want to take are right for you, and won’t interfere with other medications you may already be taking.

green tea

Don’t forget the three classics: soup, tea and sleep!

Sometimes you just can’t beat a hot cup of tea, some soothing chicken noodle soup and a nap with your favourite cozy blanket. Just take it from our readers-here’s the magic formula they swear by:

Homemade soup, lots of rest, and lots of tea!” Siobhn McCarthy, via Facebook

Miso soup. Works every time.” @DailyCyns, via Twitter

Sleep, hot tea with lemon, honey and a splash of whiskey.” -Michelle Kellner, via Facebook

A hot rum toddy, warm bed and good book.” @globaltaster, via Twitter

Green tea, vitamin C, chicken soup, lots of liquids, rest and TLC.” Maggie Outland, via Facebook

Homemade organic chicken soup and a tea made with ginger, lemon and honey.” Leanne Henwood-Adam, via Facebook

sick cold flu

Take a natural approach

If you’re not a fan of supplements and chicken soup just won’t cut it, try one of these alternative ideas:

I make an elderberry syrup for the kids,” says Twitter follower @AnkeB. “It stimulates the immune system and lessens duration of a cold if its taken hold.”

Twitter follower @Holistic_Gal has this advice: “Sea Salt water nasal irrigation and gargling with sea salt as well. Plenty of rest, zero sugar, sometimes veggie juicing.” Facebook user Margaret Garnier and Twitter follower @whineandcheez both recommend using a neti pot, which rinses your nasal passages and relieves that stuffed-up feeling. Neti pots can be found at most health food stores and some pharmacies.

When all else fails, try a little love. Facebook user Mikayla Mkay Amaretto’s secret to cold-fighting? “Lots of kisses and hugs!” It may not stop the sniffles, but it will definitely brighten your spirits.

Arthritis: Your guide to treatments that work https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/arthritis-your-guide-to-treatments-that-work/ https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/arthritis-your-guide-to-treatments-that-work/#respond Sat, 01 Jan 2000 00:00:00 +0000 Looking for relief from arthritis pain? Here's your guide to what works

Arthritis: Your guide to treatments that workSource: Excerpted from “Your Health: What Works, What Doesn’t”Osteoarthritis is to older adults what ear infections are to children: common, frustrating, painful, a rite of passage. Except that people don’t grow out of arthritis’they grow into it. Genes play a role in causing joint-cushioning cartilage to break down, but past injuries, too much or too little exercise, and even a crooked gait can speed up the destruction. There’s no cure yet for osteoarthritis, but research is zeroing in on what brings relief. Here are a few treatments to try.

Acetaminophen

Cheap, relatively safe when taken as directed, and with little risk of causing gastrointestinal bleeding the way other painkillers can, acetaminophen should be your first choice for treating mild to moderate arthritis pain. One review of seven trials found that people taking acetaminophen scored about four points lower on a pain scale than those taking placebos’a statistically significant difference. Meanwhile, evaluations of studies comparing acetaminophen with aspirin found that both provided similar pain relief, though ibuprofen appeared to work better than either. Acetaminophen is less likely than aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen to cause stomach bleeding, however. Doses up to 4,000 milligrams a day may be safe in people who don’t have kidney or liver damage, but talk to your doctor first, as taking too much acetaminophen does have the potential to cause problems over time.

Acupuncture

The simple act of inserting a needle into the skin and underlying tissue of your knee can help relieve the pain of arthritis. Over and over again, whether researchers were comparing real acupuncture to fake acupuncture or even to conventional arthritis treatments, they found that the ancient Chinese treatment not only relieved pain but in some instances also improved joint function. For instance, in one study, 283 participants received either education about arthritis or 26 weeks of either fake or real acupuncture. Those who received the real thing improved 23 percent more on pain scores, 150 percent more on physical function scores, and 74 percent more on their overall ability to function compared with the other groups.

Devil’s Claw

This anti-inflammatory herb seems to work similarly to prescription painkillers known as COX-2 inhibitors, such as celecoxib (Celebrex). However, they don’t have the potential COX-2 inhibitor side effects, including increased risk of ulcers, stomach pain, and heart attack. Studies in which participants took a daily dose containing 60 milligrams of harpagoside (the active ingredient in devil’s claw) found the herb helped reduce the pain of arthritis in the hip, knee, and spine.

Weight Loss

Losing weight is one of the best things you can do in terms of both preventing arthritis and reducing the pain, swelling, and disability it causes. That’s because excess weight puts excess pressure on joints. It doesn’t take much weight loss to see your condition improve: Each pound of weight you lose reduces the stress on your knees by 4 pounds. In one major study, it took only about a 10 percent weight loss (that’s 18 pounds if you weigh 180) to significantly improve participants’ knee and hip function. For instance, they were able to walk farther in six minutes and climb stairs faster than those who didn’t lose the weight.

Corticosteroid injections

Injecting corticosteroids directly into an arthritic joint helps reduce pain and stiffness by reducing inflammation. An analysis of 10 studies found that people who received the injections were 66 percent more likely than a control group to have less pain and greater function in their arthritic knees up to 24 weeks after the treatment. Similar positive results have been documented for shoulder injections. While these shots can relieve underlying inflammation that’s responsible for the pain, they can’t do anything to improve the bottom-line cause of the pain ‘ that degenerating cartilage. And their effects are generally short-lived. They also have to be used judiciously, since long-term use can lead to thinning skin, weight gain, facial puffiness, increased blood pressure, cataracts, and osteoporosis.

Exercise

No matter how hard it is or how much it hurts initially, you need to get out there and move if you want to improve your joint function. Study after study shows that exercise is an important and successful therapy for relieving the pain and limited function that arthritis can cause.Which exercise is best? The smart approach’endorsed by most doctors, arthritis organizations, and researchers’is a gentle mix of three types.’ Range of motion exercise like stretching and dancing to help maintain your joints’ full range of motion and flexibility” Strength exercise to keep the muscles that protect and support your joints strong” Aerobic or endurance exercise to control weight, reduce inflammation and maintain joint function. Ideally you should start by working with a physical therapist or trainer who understands arthritis and can develop a program tailored for you.

Capsaicin cream

Capsaicin is the substance that gives hot peppers their bite. As an ingredient in a cream to rub over painful joints, it can also relieve your arthritis pain. One study randomly assigned people with arthritis to receive either the real thing or a placebo cream. They graded their own levels of pain and stiffness the week before the treatment started, then applied the cream daily for 28 days, ranking their pain and stiffness over time. The results: Pain levels dropped by about 16 percent in the placebo group but by 77 percent in the capsaicin group, with major differences beginning in the second week. Even better, stiffness fell by 18 percent in the placebo group but by about 86 percent in the capsaicin group, beginning the first week. Interestingly, another study found that even if researchers told patients that capsaicin was less effective than other medicines, patients still preferred the cream to any other pain relief option. The main reason? Fewer side effects.

Here are some ways to get your nails back in shape

There are people who really care for their nails, while others couldn’t care less. But when nail problems strke, it’s time to seek help. Here are some ways to get your nails back in shape fast with better nutrition, selected supplements, and fungus-fighters.

Recognize your nail problem

Apart from ingrown toenails, nail fungus is probably the most disagreeable nail problem. When you get this affliction’usually on a toenail’the nail turns thick, discoloured, and crumbly. Other nail problems include brittle nails, which can be the result of age or too much or too little moisture, or nutritional deficiencies. And certain skin diseases can affect the nails, including psoriasis (it can cause a thickening and pitting of the nails) and the patchy hair loss known as alopecia areata (it can cause ridged, pitted, rough nails).

Foil fungus

To fight stubborn nail fungus, try tea-tree oil. A powerful antiseptic, it can help make nail fungus disappear. In fact, in one study it proved to be as effective as a prescription antifungal medicine. Once or twice a day, apply a drop or two to the discolored nail. A good time to do it is after you bathe or shower, when your skin is softest.

‘ Alternatively, you can use an antifungal powder that absorbs moisture and prevents fungus. Some good ones are Tinacten powder or Dr. Scholl’s powder. You can sprinkle a medicated antifungal powder into your socks too.

If your feet are sweaty when you get home, change into a fresh pair of socks right away. And if you have an office job, take along a pair of clean socks’especially on hot summer days’so you can change before you start work.

Don’t clip your cuticles. When you do this, you’re removing your nail’s protective barrier. Fungi and bacteria find it easier to get a grip around the base of the nail after the cuticle is removed.

Take your vitamins

‘ Take 300 micrograms of biotin, a B vitamin, four to six times a day with food. Long ago, veterinarians learned that this vitamin could strengthen horses’ hooves’and the hooves are made primarily from keratin, the same material that makes up human nails. If your nails are weak or brittle, biotin might be all you need to strengthen and thicken them. But it doesn’t work right away. You’ll need to take this treatment for six months or more before you see a noticeable difference.

Drink a cup of horsetail or nettle tea once a day. These herbs are high in silica and other minerals that nails need to grow.

Beat brittle, flaking nails with your diet

‘ If your nails are brittle or flaking, try getting more essential fatty acids. These are found in foods such as fatty fish and flaxseed or flaxseed oil. If you don’t eat much fish, take 1 tablespoon flaxseed oil a day (use it in place of other oil in salad dressing), or sprinkle ground flaxseeds on your cereal or other food.

‘ Evening primrose oil is another source of essential fatty acid. Take 1,000 milligrams three times a day with meals.

‘ If your nails have white spots, you may be deficient in zinc. Nuts, root vegetables, whole grains, meat, and shellfish are good sources of this mineral.

Moisturize and protect

‘ For dry, brittle nails, rub petroleum jelly or a thick cream into your nails to hold moisture around and under your nails. If you do this at bedtime, slip a pair of thin cotton gloves on your hands before you to sleep.

Wear vinyl gloves every time you wash dishes or do other household tasks that require you to immerse your hands in water. (Vinyl is best, because people with nail problems tend to have skin that is sensitive to rubber.)

‘ Avoid polish removers that contain acetone or formaldehyde. They’re terribly drying to nails. Use acetate-based removers instead.

Say no to fake nails

For women who have problems with weak, soft, brittle nails, artificial nails can seem like a godsend. But if you want to avoid nail fungus, forgo the fakes, no matter how much you long for elegant nails. Artificial nails are glued on top of your real ones, and the gap in-between creates a breeding ground for fungus. Even worse, this is an area where you can develop a painful bacterial infection. Artificial nails are the most common cause of nail fungus in women.
