Im always looking for a new way to add a little je ne sais quoi to my makeup look, which typically means updating my lipstick colour. For years I leaned on long-wear matte options (remember the Kylie Lip Kit craze?), but now Im turned off of anything that leaves my lips feeling remotely chapped. I’ve tried lip glosses, lip stains and even hydrating lipsticks, but found them all to be too drying. Conveniently, there’s a new buzzy lip product on the scene that’s everything I’ve been looking forlip oil.

What is lip oil?

Sitting somewhere between a lip balm and gloss, lip oils are the best of both worlds. Theyre nourishing and hydrating like a balm, and provide a tinted sheen like a gloss (but without the sticky ickiness). Lip oils are sometimes marketed as a hydrating serum, formulated with moisturizing and plumping ingredients like vitamin E, peptides and hyaluronic acid, which makes them a bit like a skin-care product.Lip oils have been around for a while, but they’ve recently gained popularity thanks to TikTok users gushing over picks from various brands. One particular product, the Dior lip oil, has gone viral with the#diorlipoil hashtag garnering nearly 700 million viewsand now retailers have a hard time keeping it in stock.

If lip oils are considered a hydrating serum, does that mean theyre good for your lips?

According to Renita Ahluwalia, founder and lead dermatologist at the Canadian Dermatology Centre, lip oils can be really good for your lipsbut it depends on the ingredients they contain. Oil is a sealant, which locks in moisture, says Ahluwalia, but “if a product contains oil without some other hydrating ingredients, youre not going to get a long-lasting hydration benefit.Ahluwalia says some lip oils are formulated with oils that provide superficial hydration” (like Dior’s version, which contains cherry oil), meaning they can make lips look hydrated, but won’t provide long-term benefits.

So, what ingredients in a lip oil should I look for if I want hydration?

If youre looking for a product thats both an aesthetic product and provides long-term hydration, look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid which draws water into the skin,” says Ahluwalia.Other ingredients to look for include peptides (which encourage the body to produce collagen), squalane (which offers more hydration) and shea butter (which softens skin), she says.

Is there anything I should be aware of?

Do a patch test before using itas you should do with any new product. Ahluwalia says that some ingredients like coconut oil and jojoba oil can cause seborrheic dermatitis (which manifests in dry, flakey red patches) in those who are predisposed. Some people, especially those with sensitive skin, might also have reactions to scented oils in some products.

The Problem with Today’s Buzzy No-Makeup Makeup Look https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/no-makeup-makeup/ Wed, 11 Jan 2023 12:00:28 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67183034 The "Five-Minute Face," a version of the popular no-makeup makeup look, is one of the biggest beauty trends today—but it isn’t as easy to achieve as you may think. Here's what to do instead.

Back in 6,000 B.C., Cleopatra helped establish makeup as a signal of wealth. In the 1920s, cosmetics brands used advertisements to encourage women to deem makeup a necessity. But a hundred years later, wearing as little makeup as possible has become a status symbol. The idea behind this trend is to wear just enough makeup to look like the naturally best version of yourselfand create the look in just a few minutes. There are almost 100 million views of TikTok makeup tutorials tagged with variations of Five-Minute Face, each one touting minor spins on the same message: You dont need a lengthy makeup routine or dozens of productsall you need is a handful to look this fresh-faced!Cosmetic companies like the new-ish makeup brand Merit have responded to this demand with a Five-Minute Morning collection. The kit includes seven core products, the same ones that can be found in most Five-Minute Face kits by other brands, including a concealer, brow gel, mascara and a lip tint. The products were created to emphasize your assets, not hide who you are. Get compliments on your skin, not your makeup, reads the marketing copy.Although mastering the look may seem effortless, its anything but: Most of the women on social media boasting about wearing only a few makeup products dont reveal the full picturespecifically, the considerable time and resources theyve poured into the treatments to achieve it.Todays five-minute faceas modelled by beauty influencers, editors and entrepreneursis predicated on the behind-the-scenes beauty work of skin care products, cosmetic procedures and plastic surgeries, argued journalist Jessica DeFino in How the 5-Minute Face Became the $5,000 Face, which she published on Substack last May. These days, even injectable procedures like Botox and Juvderm are marketed as self-care. Minimal makeup, then, is maximal everything else. Its more masquerading as less.Pricey dermatologist visits make the Five-Minute Face possible: Laser treatments lighten dark spots, so only a touch of concealer is needed to achieve a clear complexion. Botox lifts the brows, so theyre perfectly shaped long before an eyebrow pencil even approaches them. Lip filler plumps the pout before the lightest swipe of tinted lip oil completes the look. Like Instagram photos that have been doctored by skin-smoothing filters, this sleight-of-hand can be damaging to anyones self-confidence.It doesnt do society any good when people arent accurately portraying everything that has gone into getting a look, says Catherine Sabiston, a professor at the University of Toronto who specializes in body image, mental health and physical activity. Plus, she says, most of the people displayed are already perpetuating the idealized standards of attractiveness, meaning theyre youthful, they have symmetrical features and theyre predominantly white.Case in point: This fall, Melisa Raouf, a 20-year-old contestant in the 2022 Miss England beauty pageant, made headlines for being the first makeup-free participant in the competitions 94 years. She told the Washington Post she wanted to challenge unrealistic beauty standards. That’s admirable, but Raouf already has the advantages of youth and seemingly flawless skin, so how much is she really pushing back?Sabiston is passionate about freeing us from the pressure to have a specific face, so we can genuinely appreciate our differences. If we can challenge those stereotypes, she says, well see little shifts in what is considered to be attractive.Of course, that doesn’t mean you should feel obligated to stop wearing makeup if you don’t want to. But instead of aiming for the Five-Minute Face, a more attainable option is to use a light hand with makeup to embrace your uniqueness. Its really nice to see actual features, says Simone Otis, a Toronto-based makeup artist. You could play up the features you have by providing a little extra glow and a little extra definitionno dermatological procedures required. This look “is very democratic, she says. Everyone could do it.Otis likes starting with a tinted moisturizer or serum, as it offers sheer coverage that can help you look a bit groomed and polished and feel your best, she says. I love the idea of a product that has a bit of colour and that will give you warmth, plus has all those good ingredients that can help skin.Look for tinted moisturizers or serums with beneficial ingredients, says Otis, such as sunscreen, hyaluronic acid (which can boost skins hydration), and vitamin C (which can help brighten skin tone over time). These products will give you some coverage without fully concealing spots or blemishes. And then if you’d like, add whatever else you’d likebrush, brow pencil, tinted lip balm.Otis believes were headed in a promising direction. Companies like 19/99 Beauty, for which Otis works as a makeup artist, feature models with real skin, meaning fine lines and wrinkles. What’s more, there are influencers who call themselves acne-positive and share photos of their unfiltered, uncovered blemished skin. And, at the Khaite show during New York Fashion Week in September, models were sent down the runway with their dark circles intentionally unconcealed. Its as if the brand is saying theres nothing wrong with dark circles and, actually, theres almost a mysterious beauty to them, says Otis.Does that mean you should stop concealing your dark circles? Not if you dont want to. But its certainly nice to see this shift in the beauty world. No Makeup Makeup Tinted SerumsOur favourite base for a no-makeup makeup look is one of the buzziest products on store shelves today, tinted serum. It offers a sheerer, more natural look than a tinted moisturizer and is typically made with ingredients that are beneficial to skin. Here are our top five picks:This clean beauty pick by celebrity makeup artist Gucci Westman comes in 20 shades and can help boost hydration, even out skin texture and promote firmness.Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Complexion Drops, $68 USD, sephora.comAvailable in four shades, this drugstore tinted serum is formulated with hyaluronic acid to keep skin hydrated and looking radiant.True Match Nude Hyaluronic Tinted Serum, $27, shoppersdrugmart.caSqualane and hyaluronic acid are the star ingredients in this new tinted serum, which keeps skin from drying out while giving it a little warmth through 10 different shades.Summer Fridays Sheer Skin Tint with Hyaluronic Acid + Squalane, $55, sephora.comFor a tinted serum that provides light coverage and a natural-looking finish, try this squalene-rich option from Rose Inc, founded by model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. These Beauty Brands Are Designing Their Products With Accessibility in Mind https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/accessible-beauty-products-canada/ Wed, 01 Jun 2022 11:00:47 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67181088 The beauty industry is finally becoming more inclusive, with a range of new products designed for people with disabilities—but it still has a ways to go.

The post These Beauty Brands Are Designing Their Products With Accessibility in Mind appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
Over the past decade, shade selections for beauty products have expanded. A diverse range of models are being represented in campaigns and overly retouched advertisements are no longer the norm. But despite the beauty industrys efforts to become more inclusive, people with disabilities have largely been left outuntil now. Independent cosmetics companies and big-name brands alike are finally prioritizing intuitive, user-friendly packaging that serves beauty lovers with disabilities.Last fall, Olay piloted an easy-to-open lid prototypea chunky cap with winged handles that fits all Olay moisturizers. The modular, grippy design allows people with dexterity issues or limb differences to effortlessly remove the lid with one hand, while a high-contrast label and Braille lettering help those with visual impairments distinguish each product. This move is in line with its parent company Procter & Gambles broader 2020 pledge to make all of its packaging more accessible by 2025. Its a shift that started in 2018 when Herbal Essencesone of more than 65 companies in the P&G familyadded raised bumps and stripes (known as tactile markers) to their shampoo and conditioner bottles for those who are visually impaired. Procter & Gamble made the design for Olays easy-open lid open-source, meaning that other brands can copy and refine the features, allowing the beauty industry to work collectively towards identifying and removing barriers. The push for more accessible products can be partially credited to P&Gs accessibility leader, Sam Latif, who is blind. In her two decades with the company, Latif has hired more people with disabilities and spoken to consumers with disabilities about their frustrations. Unfortunately, Olays caps are only available in North America, proving that we still have further to go when it comes to making accessible products readily available. In Canada, one in five people over the age of 15 has a disability. For those with visual impairments, beauty packaging with raised bumps, high-contrast colour schemes and easy-to-decipher fonts can make a big difference. These are things that are so simple and minute, but that most companies just havent thought of, says Mary Mammoliti, a Toronto-based food expert and disability advocate who is legally blind.Mammoliti was diagnosed in her 20s with retinitis pigmentosa (a degenerative eye disease) and had to adapt her beauty routine, relying more heavily on her senses of touch and smell to find products that work for her. Today, she actively seeks out brands like U.K.-based Blind Beauty, which emphasizes product scent, texture and accessible packaging with its vegan and cruelty-free skin care products. Other companies like U.S.-based Victorialand Beauty specialize in packaging that features the CyR.U.S. System (raised universal symbols) and embossed QR codes that play audio information about the products within its certified organic skin care line. Not all accessible brands shout their merits from the rooftopsin fact, one of the most ubiquitous beauty tools is actually an innovator in inclusive design. Peer into any makeup artists cosmetic bag and youll likely find a Beautyblender ($26), a teardrop-shaped sponge made for streak-free makeup application that was designed by co-founder Veronica Lorenz, who has dexterity issues. After being diagnosed with a benign cervical spinal cord tumour in the 1990s that left her with reduced feeling in her right hand and arm, the Vancouver-born, Los Angeles-based former makeup artist had to hold tools and brushes with her non-dominant hand. The Beautyblenders foam construction allows users to apply foundation in a natural-looking way, but it also boasts a chubby shape that is easier to grip than your typical makeup brushes.Lorenz says the product wasnt marketed as a tool for people with disabilities out of fear that it wouldnt be widely accepted. At the time of the Beautyblenders launch in 2007, many brands avoided the topic of disabilities completely. Lorenz says she is now seeing this change, especially as more people realize that self-care routines can be especially empowering for people living with chronic conditions and disabilities. Her own journey has led her to continue to design several products specifically for people with disabilities, including VampStamp, a tool with a winged eyeliner stamp on the end that can be dipped in ink and easily pressed along the lash line. The product became a go-to for people with dexterity issues, as well as anyone with less-than-perfect application skills.Today, more products are taking an inclusive approach. Kohl Kreatives has a line of flexible makeup brushes (45) that bend forwards and backwards, allowing users (including those with motor disabilities) to apply makeup in a way thats comfortable for them. Other products require only one hand to use, like Revlons One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizera round brush and hair dryer in oneand Drunk Elephants Protini Polypeptide Firming Moisturizer ($89), which has a push applicator that eliminates the need to squeeze or tilt the bottle to dispense the product. But much of the work left to be done goes beyond creating inclusive products. Its also about encouraging the beauty industry to allow people with disabilities to tell their own stories, says Xian Horn, a New York City-based beauty and disability advocate. Were combating old-fashioned ideas around what disability looks like, feels like and is like, she says. The more empowering stories that we can share, the more of a ripple effect it will have on future generations.accessible beauty products canada | Best Health Turn Edits V2 Copy

best sustainable beauty tools | flat lay of sustainable beauty tools on a green background

Green your beauty routine

We all want effective beauty tools, but these days, pondering a beauty purchase might include questioning its sustainability. Does it contribute to the plastic pollution problem? (A 2016 study revealed that only nine percent of plastic is recycled in Canada.) How much strain does it put on the worlds water supply? Where on the globe was it made and by who, and how were they treated? Theres lots to think about, and frankly, finding sustainable perfection in any one product is unrealistic.

What you can do is use your consumer power to support environmentally sound products and focus on the cumulative effect of making small changes to your daily routines. Thankfully, more brands are rethinking their impact on the planet, and there are now eco-minded options for every part of a beauty routine.

This is where details matter and small gestures, like swapping disposable cotton pads for machine-washable ones, can add up to a carbon-footprint win. Whether youre in the market for a makeup bag revamp, a sink-ritual renew or a greener way to shower, weve got you covered. And, in the spirit of paying it forward, these sustainable beauty buys also make thoughtful, unique gifts.

For your makeup routine

What goes into a sustainable makeup brush? It starts with a handle made of bamboo (the plant grows quickly and efficiently, and requires much less water than other woods), includes a recyclable ferrule (the aluminum accent) and is finished off with cruelty-free bristles made of the softest long-lasting nylon.

The Body Shop Fresh Nude Foundation Brush, $26, OR Angled Blusher Brush, $22, thebodyshop.com.

For the perfect ponytail

Give your topknot an eco-minded makeover with a biodegradable plastic-free hair accessory made of natural tree rubber and organic, fair-trade cotton.

Kooshoo Organic Scrunchies, $20 for two, kooshoo.com.

For your lips

For detangling your locks

Bamboo grows quickly and is biodegradable, which earns it major ecological points. On this hairbrush, widely spaced bamboo bristles stand in for synthetic or animal-sourced ones to gently glide through hair and those nubby tips deliver a blissful scalp massage.

Bkind bamboo brush, $22, bkind.com.

For scrubbing yourself clean

Made with the porous root of an Asian vegetable, the konjac sponge has a gentle texture and vitamin-rich composition that will upgrade your cleansing ritual. Ideal for all skin types, even sensitive, one sponge lasts up to three months. It can then be tossed into the compost bin or live on in the garden or a potted plant to naturally hold water.

One Love Organics The Cleansing Sponge in Rose Clay, $13, thedetoxmarket.ca.

For those stubborn leg hairs

This razors elegant brass handle is designed to be long-lasting, and the investment on the handle is offset by the replacement blades, which cost way less than conventional options.

Well Kept Safety Razor, $82; replacement blades, $15 for 22; thedetoxmarket.ca.

For cleaning your hair

A chunky unisex shampoo bar made with coconut and sweet almond oil can last up to 60 washes and means one less 500-millilitre plastic bottle on your conscious. Supporting a Black-owned Toronto-based business feels equally good.

Sade Baron Shampoo Bar, $14, sadebaron.com.

For exfoliating to the max

Ditch the synthetic scrubbie for an ethically produced brush that stars one of Mother Natures top-notch exfoliators. Semi-firm sisal comes from the perennial agave plant, which doesnt require fertilizer or pesticides. The handle, a repurposed timber castoff otherwise destined for the landfill, deserves a shoutout too.

Consonant Skincare Sisal Dry Brush, $20, consonantskincare.com.

Beauty Trends on TikTok

Did you buy a beauty product because you saw it on TikTok? With the viral success of the social media platform, chances are your 2021 beauty haul was influenced by TikTok trends, even if you didn’t realize it.The platform that was known in the Before Times mostly as a place for teens to post videos of themselves dancing exploded over the pandemicvideos tagged #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt have gained over a collective seven billion views and videos tagged with #BeautyTok have racked up 3.2 billion views (also #TikTokBeauty has 650.8M and #Beauty has 68.3B). Videos range from skin care and make-up tutorials to product reviews, driving huge sales of popular products. And they’re not just about hyping new brandssome of TikTok’s most viral hits have been the TikTok generation rediscovering brands and products that have been on the shelves for years, like CeraVe skincare, which saw an 89 percent increase in sales, and The Ordinary’s AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, which saw a 200 percent (!) sales bump. Now, for a lot of beauty brands, getting their product to go viral on TikTok is, as they say, #goals. (Though it can backfire toojust ask Chanel about their $1025 Advent Calendar. Or maybe dont.)Being a part of the cultural conversation has always been central to the success of the most influential beauty brands, says Kathryn Hudson, the director of media partnerships at TikTok Canada. And right now that conversation is happening on TikTok. Creators are authentic brand ambassadors and are driving real-world trends. Most TikTok beauty creators (check out @meicrosoft, @ilysmnails, @lordthivi, @danielleclairexx and @glamzilla for a taste of some good Canadian ones) have skipped over the polished Instagram aesthetic for a more real, less-professional vibe, so it feels like youre getting straight talk from your quirky friend who just happens to have glowing skin as opposed to someone who appears to be a real-life Barbie doll.TikToks short-form videos are the perfect medium to find easy products that often give instant results you can see. If a beauty product goes viral on TikTok, you know it doesnt suckand also that its probably sold out.Want to get in on the action (or the product waitlist)? Here are some of the beauty goodies that have hit it big.Nyx Concealer Serum

Its powers could be thanks to the skin care ingredients like mushroom, cica and green tea or it could be witchcraft. Either way, Ill have to take their word for itits been sold out, and I havent been able to get my hands on one.

12 Best Non Toxic Nail Polishes For 2021

Why you really should use non-toxic nail polish

Everyone loves a good DIY manicure, but perhaps we should be focusing less on how to make nail polish last longer and more on how to make it less harmful to our health. In 2015, a widely quoted study co-authored by researchers at Duke University and the Environmental Working Group reported evidence of a common nail polish chemical called triphenyl phosphate (TPHP). The chemical, a known endocrine disruptor that may interfere with hormone function, was found in the bodies of every single woman who painted her nails for the study. Other toxins in nail polish have been linked to additional health issues. That’s where non-toxic nail polish comes in.You’ve probably read about 3-free, 5-free, 7-free, 9-free, 10-free products (among others). There’s a reason those numbers appear on labels. “Non-toxic nail polish generally means that the formulation does not contain these three ingredients: toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), or formaldehyde. This is also listed as ‘3 Free’ on the packaging,” said Dasha Minina, founder of Maxus Nails, which sells vegan polishes that are free of 10 chemicals (aka 10 free). The higher the number, the more toxic chemicals the polish excludes. The good news is that in the past few years, more nail polish companies have committed to creating less-toxic products, so it’s easier to find the best nail polish and best gel nail polish without compromising your health. (Just be sure you know how to remove gel nail polish without harming your nails.) Read on for some of our favorite non-toxic nail polishes.(Related:8 Best Gel Nail Polishes for a Chip-Free Manicure)

Henna Brows: The New Trend that Uses One of the Oldest Hair Dyes https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/henna-brows/ Wed, 01 Sep 2021 14:35:59 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67176740 Should you try henna brows? Here’s what the pros say.

The post Henna Brows: The New Trend that Uses One of the Oldest Hair Dyes appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
In the past few years, weve witnessed the birth of microblading (in which eyebrow hairs are tattooed onto skin), ombr brows (which involves dots being tattooed on skin for a faded look) and brow lamination (where brows are permed up for a feathery look). Now, a new service, using one of the worlds oldest hair dyes, is popping up on beauty salon menus across the country. Henna brows is the latest way to tint eyebrows and get the perfect shape and look.Traditional eyebrow tinting dyes only the hair, but with henna brows, the skin is tinted as well, says Krishna Patel, senior brow artist at Kereshmah Beauty in Toronto. This means we’re able to transform the shape of the eyebrows, and even make them appear thicker. The treatment uses henna paste mixed with dye, explains Krishna, so it doesnt turn brows the orangey-red shade of henna, and can be used on hair of all shades, from black to blonde.Intrigued? Heres everything you need to know about henna brows.(Related: Brows 101How To Build a Perfect Brow)

What is henna?

Henna, also known as mehndi, is a dye derived from a plant (called Lawsonia inermis), and it can also refer to temporary intricate body art typically painted on womens hands in some cultures for special ceremonies and celebrations. Its commonly used in South Asian countries, particularly India and Pakistan, but the origins go back to Egypt, says Divya Patel, a professional henna artist (who has no relation to Krishna Patel).Back in the day, henna was used for its cooling property, says Divya. People used to apply henna to the soles of their feet and other parts of their bodies in hotter climates to cool their bodies. After noticing the dying effect, women began using henna as makeupon nails for natural polish, lips for a natural lipstick, hair for natural hair dye. Most recently, its been used to create temporary freckles, and now, dye eyebrows.

What is henna paste made out of?

There are different ways to make henna paste, also known as Mehndi paste. The traditional way, explains Divya, starts with drying and crushing leaves from the henna tree into a powder, and mixing it with water, lemon juice, tea and essential oils.Ready-made henna [which is offered at many salons] is not natural, even if [salons] advertise it as natural, because henna does not have shelf life, says Divya. A lot of over-the-counter henna have added chemicals, but I don’t necessarily think those chemicals are dangerous. The one thing to avoid, according to both Divya and Krishna, is black henna. It contains a chemical called para-phenylenediamine (PPD), which is very dangerous and can cause allergic reactions, says Krishna.

How are henna brows done?

According to Krishna, the henna brows process starts with a consultation so the aesthetician understands the shape the client wants. Then the brows are cleansed to remove oil and dirt so the dye will better adhere to the skin and hairs.Next, the dye is applied, ideally in an ombr technique to avoid a boxy brow look and achieve more natural results. I remove the tint in the inner corners of the brows within the first two minutes and leave the dye on the rest of the brows for a few more minutes, says Krishna. Once the dye is removed, brows are waxed, plucked or threaded into shape, and trimmed. The whole process takes about 45 minutes and costs upwards of $50.

How long does it last?

On average, it lasts about three weeks, says Krishna. But if your skin is oily or combination, or if you are really active and therefore sweat a lot, it may last only one or two weeks. To ensure henna brows last as long as possible, Krishna advises to keep skin products, like cleansers and creams, away from the eyebrow area.

When did henna brows gain popularity in Canada?

Henna brows slowly started popping up on Canadian salon menus in 2019, says Darya Maleki, owner of Kereshmah Beauty. Before then, henna brows were done at very few salons around the world, she says. And now, Darya says the treatment is more popular at her Toronto salon than typical brow tinting. Even if someone books a brow tint I try to convince them to do henna brows because it lasts longer and can transform the shape better than just the brow tint, adds Krishna.

Are there any risks to henna brows?

My only advice is just to take the safest route possible, says Divya. Ive seen a lot of people use henna to do freckles using chemicals from Amazon, and that’s not the safest way to do it.Krishna does patch tests on clients before applying henna. I add a touch of the dye to the wrist, and tell them to look for a reaction within the next 24 hours, but we’ve never had any issues before. She advises avoiding henna brows if youre pregnanteven though henna is generally safe for pregnant women, the dye thats added to the henna paste for henna brows may cause a reaction.Next: What Is An Eyelash Serum And Do I Need One?

My friend suffers from constant itchy skin because shes allergic to the entire world, so I got her to test this new lotion made for extremely reactive skin. Jar Of La Neige Lip Sleeping Mask, Peach Iced Tea

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask in Peach Iced Tea

I never bought the hype around Laneiges iconic lip sleeping mask, which, at $26 seemed a little silly even if it is called a lip mask (I was like Ya, guys, its called LIP BALM and its $5, try it sometime!) Well, I finally decided to try it when Laneige launched this new summer flavour and I woke up the next morning to noticeably softerdare I say, pillowy? lips, and I dont even suffer from extra dryness or cracking. Vitamin C, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and minerals form a thick protective layer over your lips to lock in moisture and activate ingredients while you snooze. Hyram Skincare

Selfless by Hyram

Judging by all the questions I get from my friends (all of whom have presumably owned faces for a longish time) people are still overwhelmed when it comes to a skincare regime. This new gentle collection from skinfluencer Hyram Yarbro and The Inkey List is all about clean, minimal ingredients and ecological sourcing practices. The ingredients and intended use for each are listed right in the product names, which makes for amusingly long names but at least youre not going to be confused! Sheseido

Shiseido Clear Stick UV Protector

Okay, this is a bit of a cheat because its technically an end-of-May launch, but I have to give a shoutout to this humble new sunscreen stick. Is it because its made with a trippy technology that reacts to heat, water and sweat to strengthen the UV protection? Is it because its 50+SPF and made up of 50 percent skincare ingredients and the clear formula can be used invisibly on all skin tones? No, its because my kid and my husband will actually use it, which is a miracle. The daily facial sunscreen battle Ive been having with my fair-skinned son has finally ended with this. He doesnt flinch, he doesnt bury his face in the couch, he doesnt wipe it all off immediately because he hates the smell or the texturehe says it actually feels good when I put it on. And then theres my husband, who has only ever (begrudgingly) used sunscreen if hes at the beach. But this he even takes this with him when he goes for bike rides. Like, in his bag?! Voluntarily? A miracle, Im telling you.$37 , shoppersdrugmart.ca.Next, here is what you need to know about sunscreen.

Six nail polish bottles arranged on alternating color background

Gel polish just keeps getting better

There’s a lot to love about gel nail polishes, those UV- and LED-curing polishes that contain acrylic oligomers: They’re ultra-shiny, require none of that waiting around dry time that comes with their traditional counterparts, and are super long-lasting (up to two weeks or longer, if you can handle the look of the grow-out phase). But they also come with a bit of a bad reputation for ruining nails and they can be difficult to remove at home. That came in large part thanks to the first generation of gel formulas that were incredibly hard on nailsbut we’re here to tell you that’s no longer the case. Now, not only do we have the best gel polishes to choose fromwith nourishing ingredients built right in, streamlined formulas, and better applicatorsbut also gel hybrid polishes that give you the high shine and longer wear but don’t require the UV light to cure or soaking to remove thanks to special gel-like polymers and resins that give them about a week of wear. Here, the best professional gel polishes to bring to the salon, the best at-home options for a DIY manicure to use with your home UV kit, and the top hybrids that land you somewhere in the middle of the benefits of a regular polish and a gel.(Related: 7 Hacks for Strong and Healthy Nails)

Big, bushy eyebrows have been popular for a while now but, for some people, following this trend may mean spending a lot of time and money plucking, shaping, gelling, colouring, and drawing on those cute caterpillars. One efficient solution many people turn to is microblading, a type of semi-permanent makeup that uses tattoo techniques to give you your ideal brows, no daily products necessary.

This type of procedurewhich can last for years, but not forevercan also be done to semi-permanently apply many types of makeup. Sound like a dream? Here’s everything you need to know if you’re considering getting it done.

(Related: This New Noninvasive Eyebrow Procedure Will Give You Perfect Brows)

Cosmetic vs. paramedical

There are two types of micropigmentation procedures, commonly known as “permanent makeup.” Paramedical permanent makeup is done to reconstruct a body part after surgery or an injurylike getting realistic nipples tattooed on reconstructed breasts after a mastectomy or covering the scar left from a cleft palate surgery. However, most permanent makeup is purely cosmetic and is usually done to enhance brows, eyes, and lips.

You can also get things like freckles and beauty marks tattooed on, a hairline adjusted, or even get stretch marks camouflaged, says Genn Shaughnessy, a makeup artist experienced in doing permanent makeup, professional movie and TV stylist, and founder of The Backstage Stylist.

Eyebrow enhancementsmicroblading, machine shading, and ombr browsare the most popular type of permanent makeup these days but lip liner and shading, and subtle eyeliner are also popular, she says.Costs can vary widely but generally range from $50 for a small touch-up to $1,000 for a full face.

(Related: What to Know Before Booking a Laser Treatment for Your Face)

It’s not a regular tattoo

Permanent makeup uses pigment instead of traditional tattoo ink. Pigments are a different formulation and are semi-permanent. They can last up to eight years for scalp micropigmentation and one to three years for brows, lips, and face, whereas tattoo ink is permanent.

The technician uses a permanent makeup pen instead of a tattoo gun to apply the pigment. The pen is a rotary machine with needle cartridges. It doesn’t make the loud buzzing noise like a tattoo gun and clients generally find it more comfortable, Shaughnessy says.Unlike a normal tattoo, the goal of both types of permanent makeup is to look realistic and not call attention to the art itself. Done right, you shouldn’t even notice that you’re looking at a tattoo.

Is permanent makeup safe?

Although permanent makeup is generally quite safe, all types of tattoos come with some health risks so it’s important to weigh the pros and cons before deciding to do it, says Howard Sobel, MD, an attending dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.”Don’t do it to follow a trend, ask yourself why you specifically want it or how it will add to your overall appearance,” he says.

Infection

There is always a chance for infection and bleeding when it comes to permanent makeup, as the needle is breaking the skin, says Dr. Sobel.

Allergic reaction

If you have sensitive skin, there is a chance that you may experience a poor reaction to the pigments. This can cause inflammation, redness, pain, swelling, a rash, or itching at the site of the tattoo. Rarely it can cause a true allergic reaction, usually to something in the dye, resulting in hives or anaphylactic shock.

Scarring

All tattoos can cause permanent scarring. Some people are prone to keloidsa type of lumpy scar caused by excess protein as a healing response to an injuryand your body may see the tattoo as an “injury,” adds Dr. Sobel.Keloids are benign but are often unsightly and your face is probably the last place you want to have one. If you know you’re prone to them, avoid getting permanent makeup.

Injuries

Permanent makeup can cause a range of injuries from the pigments, the technique, or the equipment used, or from a mistake or accident, says Dr. Sobel. These can be slight, like loss of eyelashes or eyebrow hair, but can also be more serious like an injury to your eyeball or eyelid, cuts, bruises, or an ectropiona condition where your eyelid turns inside out.

Pain

This procedure is typically less painful than a regular tattoo but that doesn’t mean it’s painless. Some clients find the sensation to be painful, irritating, frightening, or otherwise upsetting, says Dr. Sobel. If you’re concerned about how you’ll react, ask for a consultation with the practitioner beforehand so you’ll know exactly what to expect.

(Related: What Is An Eyelash Serum And Do I Need One?)

Not everyone is a good candidate for permanent makeup

Dr. Sobel advises you avoid getting any type of micropigmentation procedure:

 • If you have any type of skin condition such as eczema, dermatitis, rosacea, or psoriasis
 • If you are on isotretinoin, a prescribed oral acne medication often referred to as its former brand name, Accutane. This medicine thins the outer layer of the skin, making it dry and sensitive
 • If you have an autoimmune condition like lupus or inflammatory arthritis, or have a compromised immune system
 • If you have a current viral or bacterial skin infection or disease. It must be treated and resolved first.
 • If you have a known allergy to metals or colourants

What to look for in a practitioner

Much of the final result of permanent makeup depends on the person doing the procedure and the environment it’s done in.Practitioners can be aestheticians, physicians (like a dermatologist or plastic surgeon), tattoo artists, or makeup artists. Make sure the person you select has the same vision as you and let them know if you have any medical or skin conditions.Locations can vary widely from a standard tattoo parlor to a doctor’s office to a high-end boutique spa. Here’s what to look for before booking an appointment:

They are following regulations

“There are many aestheticians, tattoo artists, makeup artists, and physicians who offer micropigmentation procedures, so be sure to do prior research on these practitioners,” says Dr. Sobel. It’s important to check that they are licensed and/or following all local regulations.

They are experienced

The most important factor in picking an artist isn’t necessarily what their job title is but rather how many times they’ve done it. Permanent makeup requires a different technique, equipment, and training than regular tattoos or other cosmetic procedures and it’s a learned skill. You don’t want your face to be their guinea pig.

They willingly provide pictures and client referrals

There’s a lot of artistry involved in these procedures and the outcome is semi-permanent so take time to research the technician and make sure their style and technique is what you’re looking for.”You want someone whose procedures give natural results,” says Dr. Sobel. “Schedule a consultation first, and check their sites and social media for before and after pictures.”

The place is sparkling clean

You’re putting little holes in your skin which can make you more vulnerable to infections so cleanliness is very important. Before sitting down, check out the place.Does the space look clean? Do they follow all public health and safety protocols, including Covid-19 guidelines if applicable? Do they sanitize the workstation and all equipment between clients? If you have any doubts go somewhere else.

They use high-quality pigments

It doesn’t matter how good the makeup artists technical skills are if they use cheap pigments. Pigment quality varies based on manufacturers and one significant way they differ is in colour fastness, says Shaughnessy. “It’s important for me to use inks that have the same colour fastness, so all pigments in the ink fade at the same rate, and my clients won’t have salmon coloured brows after the first year,” she says.

How to take care of permanent makeup

You can get the best permanent makeup done by the best artist and it can still end up looking wonky or getting infected if you don’t take care of it properly.

Give it time

Most permanent makeup procedures take three to five days to heal. During this time you should avoid covering it with anything not recommended by the technician including lotions or other types of makeup. It also takes a few days to settle and for the inflammation to go down so you won’t see your full results right away.

Follow all after-care directions

Your artist should give you a printed set of after-care instructions about how to keep the area clean and covered while it heals. It will depend on which part you got inked, what procedure you had done, and other individual factors. Follow those instructions to the letter.

Don’t cover it with a dirty mask

A common mistake these days is covering a freshly tattooed face with a dirty face maska huge no-no as it can introduce bacteria into your wound and cause an infection or slow healing, says Shaughnessy. Make sure all face coverings are sterile.

Avoid tanning beds and the sun

Pigments will fade from sun exposure, tanning beds or any source of UV light. Avoid these until your makeup is healed and then wear sunscreen every time you go out, says Shaughnessy.

Schedule touch-ups

Permanent makeup should be touched up about every six weeks to keep it looking its best, says Shaughnessy.Getting your eyebrows filled in or your eyeliner put on with semi-permanent pigment can be an efficient and cost-effective solution for people who want to enhance or simply skip daily makeup application. Just make sure you are a good candidate for the procedure, find a good technician, and take care of it properly afterwards.

Nail bars were among the first services to close under COVID-19 restrictions and the last to reopen, but people still want cute nail looks for a little pick-me-up (its the small things!). Enter easy, effortless press-ons. Theyve come a long way since Lee Press-On Nails were launched back in 1985. While there are lots of affordable drugstore options now (usually $10 to $15 for a pack of 24) from brands like Helios, LOral Paris Colour Riche, Quo Beauty, Kiss and Impress, nail bars across the country have been launching their own custom lines of next-level pressies, created by an army of talented nail artists who would otherwise be out of work. When a second lockdown started looming for Toronto in the fall, Leeanne Colley, the owner of Tips Nail Bar, knew she had to act fast. Her two locations for cool-girl nail art had just recovered from the last shutdown, so when one of her employees suggested they start a custom press-on nails brand, Colley launched Press Refresh. It really helps to keep our creativity going, she says. The product also helps her customers satisfy their obsession with having Instagram-worthy nails. Clients send in their precise nail measurements, and each set is hand-painted. Prices start at $40 for a solid shade and range from $75 to $120 for a designer set, where you can choose from one of the designs on the website or collaborate directly with a Tips nail artist. Bonus: If you use the included gel tabs to apply your Press Refresh (as opposed to a separately purchased glue), then the nails are reusable.Colley has some strict rules, however, for press-on success, whether youre using her boutique options or a drugstore brand.Proper prep for your natural nails is the most important step, she says. Her list of must-dos includes washing your nails with rubbing alcohol or a nail cleanser to remove any natural oils, cutting your nails back as short as possible and buffing them until you get rid of any shine. Colleys products, when applied with the included gel, can stay on for up to five days, at which point you just run them under ice-cold water to freeze the gel pads and pop the nails off. Tips is adding new options all the time, and Colley predicts a lot of tone-on-tone colours, geometric designs, wavy looks, multi-shades in which you sport a different colour on each nail and barely-there nudes for spring. We just keep going and going and going.(Related: How the Owner of Tips Nail Bar Keeps Her Company Going During Quarantine)

For the eyes

Masks keep the focus on our eyes, and the spring runways were here for it with mountains of fluffy eyelashes and amped-up cats-eye looks. Jodi Urichuk, LOral Pariss Canadian makeup expert, says spiky lashes are out and soft, feathery lashes are in.To help, MAC has revamped its entire line of falsies, Lancme is coming out with Cils Booster Revitalizing Lash Serum, Maybelline New York is launching Lash Sensational Sky High and CoverGirl is upping its au naturel game with the debut of Clean Lash Blast mascara. As for your lids, a cats eye isnt exactly new, but this season the look is long, with an emphasis on creating more height and extending the tail well past the outer corner of the eye. Try Bite Beautys new Upswing Extreme Longwear Liquid Eyeliner in black, or if you want to be extra trendy, try Annabelles Retractable Eyeliner in Saffron Metal or Guccis Stylo Contours les Yeux in Celeste, a bright blue.If that all seems a bit much for a time when the glitziest thing youll probably be doing is maybe maybe! sipping some socially distanced wine on a patio with your book club, its a good year for buildable, easy-to-use cream eyeshadows you can just pat on with your finger for an instant polished look or a great base. Get a wash of rosy or champagne shimmer with Burts Bees new Color Nurture Cream Eye Shadow, try a sparkly shade of LOral Pariss new Age Perfect Creamy Eyeshadow or go for a saturated colour with one of the 24 new releases in MACs Pro Longwear Paint Pot collection.Im usually doing my eyeshadow in the parked car, says Urichuk, so I love a cream formula theres no fallout, and it blends really easily.(Related: An Easy, Glitzy Eye to Wear Over Your Mask When You Need a Pick-Me-Up)

Dewy skin for the win

The spring catwalks were full of juicy, low-maintenance faces. While thats easier said than done if youre not a 17-year-old model, there are lots of new goodies coming out to help you try to achieve this bright, super hydrated look. Neutrogena is expanding its Hydro Boost collection with a new hyaluronic acid serum, and Vichy is releasing its hyaluronic-acid-based Liftactiv HA Wrinkle Filler Serum. You can still get some of the blurring goodness of foundation without wearing a full face by using a primer like LOral Paris Age Perfect Blurring Face Primer or a glow booster such as Charlotte Tilburys Hollywood Flawless Filter, which has just added five new shades.Theres also a newish category, imported from the K-beauty world, of clear, illuminating liquids that can be worn alone or mixed into foundation for an instant shot of I-just-drank-more-water-than-Gwyneth-ever-has freshness, like Glow Recipes Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drop. And if you cant let go of foundation, theres good news Yves Saint Laurent is coming out with a new botanically infused version of its lightweight luminosity veil Touche Eclat le Teint, and Bare Minerals is launching a liquid version of its beloved glowy loose mineral powder.Next: What Is an Eyelash Serum and Do I Need One?

Do eyelash serums really help your eyelashes grow?

Ive always loved big, fluffy lashes. Ive been piling on mascara since I was I dont know, four? And pre-COVID I was a total sucker for eyelash extensions. But with eyelash bars shuttered during lockdown and mask-wearing meaning that eyes are the only thing anyone sees, I started stocking up on over-the-counter eyelash serums. Thanks to the same aging processes that affect our skin and hair, many women over forty start to see thinning eyelashes, too. But Sonya Abdulla, a dermatologist at Dermatology on Bloor in Toronto warns that theres a big difference between a medical-grade growth serum that actually makes lashes longer and the ever-expanding list of over-the-counter lash serums that hydrate and strengthen lashes. The same way that you can condition the hair on your scalp you can use similar products to condition your eyelashes, she says. Over-the-counter serums dont necessarily make the eyelashes grow more quicklytheyre there to provide some TLC.The only product officially approved for eyelash growth in Canada is Latisse, whose main ingredient is a hormone called bimatoprost. Latisse prolongs the growth phase of the eyelash life cycle and costs around $200-$225 for a four-month daily supplyafter that, the general idea is to use it a few times a week to maintain your new Bambi lashes and can only be dispensed by a doctor. (Many people, myself included, have also had success actually lengthening their lashes with Eye Envy, which you can get for about $100 at salons and fancier nail bars, but the brand is secretive about the active ingredient and it isnt sold online).Side effects from Latisse are rare but can include skin and eye irritation, permanent dark flecks on your iris, (especially for people who have green or hazel eyes), and discolouration of the eyelid skin. Abdulla warns that you also have to be careful that Latisse doesnt drip onto other parts of your face, where it can also stimulate hair growth. Not ready for medical-grade-level lash intervention yet? Here are some of the best over-the-counter conditioning lash serums you can try first for a healthier wink.(Related: The Top Beauty Trends to Come Out of Pandemic Life)

With masks continuing to be a mandatory accessory for the foreseeable future, a bold lip will remain under wraps. But that doesnt mean we cant still have some fun with makeup.Glitzy eye makeup may seem like a tough look to master, but its actually pretty simple to pull off. And its more wearable than you think totally appropriate for a Zoom cocktail party. We asked makeup artist Sheri Stroh for her top tips for a no-fail fun eye makeup look.(Related: 6 Beauty Finds to Glam-Up Your Look This Party Season)holiday eye with face mask

1. Line em up!

Dont let eyeliner intimidate you. You dont have to be a pro at creating a high-drama cat eye to pull off more defined peepers, says Stroh. The secret is to keep the look soft blend, blend, blend. Kohl pencils that are easy to smudge really make it simple, she says. You can dot the liner along your lash line or quickly swipe it across, and then use your ring finger or a small makeup brush to blend it in. You dont have to worry about being super accurate because youre going to blend it all out anyway, says Stroh. If you want to really define your eyes, you can use kohl pencil along the waterline, which is inside the eye, as well, she says. To up the drama, swap basic brown or black for a metallic or jewel tone. If you have green eyes, plum, burgundy and purple will really make them stand out. Tones of bronze and copper will make blue eyes pop. And brown eyes can really get away with anything, says Stroh.(Related: 5 Eye Makeup Looks to Get You Through Holiday Party Season)holiday eye with face mask | Burt's Bees eyeliner in bronzeTry this: Burts Bees Defining Retractable Eyeliner in Hammered Bronze, $13, walmart.caholiday eye with face mask

2. Make a shadow

Most people get so intimidated by eyeshadows, says Stroh. They just buy a palette and dont know where to start with it. If you dont usually wear a lot of eye makeup, swap powder shadows for user-friendly cream eye shadows, which are easier to apply.Shades like brown, bronze and champagne work on all skin tones. Start by tapping a bit of cream shadow along the lash line, and then use your ring finger or a medium-size crease brush to blend it upward. You want to use a back-and-forth movement, like a windshield wiper, says Stroh. Repeat the process on the lower lash line for added definition. Youre basically creating a halo effect around your eyes, she says. For a more dramatic look, dab some gold, silver or copper over the middle of your lids for extra sparkle. That will really make them pop, says Stroh.(Related: 9 Personal Care Product Upgrades That Also Make The Best Gifts)holiday eye with face mask | Charlotte Tilbury walk of no shame potTry this: Charlotte Tilbury Jewel Pots in Walk of No Shame, $40, charlottetilbury.comholiday eye with face mask

3. Lash out

Since youve used more neutral tones on your lids, you could pump up the colour by layering a jewel-tone mascara on your lashes to coordinate with your liner, says Stroh. I love burgundy, electric blue and emerald green mascaras, she says. They can definitely be a strong look.Keep in mind, though, that a coloured mascara wont overly define your lashes. If you like the look of full lashes, you might want to go back to black or even brown, she says. To give them more oomph, go for a full-volume mascara and consider opting for a waterproof formula too. Wearing a mask is hot and things are maybe smudging or flaking a bit more, says Stroh. This will help keep your makeup in place, no matter how youre celebrating this season.(Related: How a Celebrity Hairstylist Gets Her Clients Hair So Good)holiday eye with face mask | LOral Paris mascaraTry this: LOral Paris Air Volume Mega Mascara, $17, shoppersdrugmart.caNext: The Best Thing to Do for Your Skin in Lockdown
