Here's how it can help reduce swelling, bruises and more.

For many years, my legs were covered in marks and bruises. The lightest graze against an object would turn them black and blue. But recently I tried a cream that promises to quickly remedy scars and bruises, and now my legs are almost completely mark-free. Whats the magical ingredient? Its just a plant, actually, called arnica montana.(Related: What the Colour of Your Bruise Is Trying to Tell You)Arnica isnt simply another buzzy skin-care ingredient thats popped up on TikTok (were looking at you, snail mucin). This herb, a perennial that features canary-yellow flowers, has been used for medicinal purposes since at least the 1500s. Why? Well, according to Christiane Laberge, a family doctor in Montreal, theres nothing elsenatural or otherwisequite like it.Laberge says the superpower of this plant is that it can help accelerate the healing process and is proven to be harmless, as long as its used correctly. Arnica isnt intended to replace conventional and doctor-prescribed medicines, but is instead used alongside them to help alleviate discomfort. Still, not that many people in Canada and the U.S. know about it.In France, 40 percent of doctors prescribe it regularly to treat bruising and swelling, says Laberge. But in Canada, doctors can only suggest it. Although Health Canada reviews all homeopathic products (like arnica) that are available in the country to make sure theyre safe, doctors are only able to prescribe therapies recognized by evidence-based protocols or results supported by scientific societies, says Laberge. However, she adds, in cases where conventional medicine has nothing to offer in terms of a cure, doctors can suggest certain homeopathic substances.Arnica can be used in two ways: as a topical treatment or as a diluted oral remedy. As a topical, it comes in the form of a cream or ointment that can be applied to the skin to treat bruises as well as sprains, sore muscles, wounds, inflammation from insect bites and swelling from broken bones. All you need to do is apply it up to three times a day to the tender area and repeat for a few days until the mark or discomfort fades. As a diluted oral remedy, it comes in capsules to swallow or tiny sweet-tasting pellets to dissolve under the tongue. Like the cream, these supplements can help treat sore muscles, bruises and swelling and can be taken as frequently as needed, lessening the dose as the pain is soothed. (Arnica in plant form is risky to consume, which is why homeopathic supplements are extremely diluted and therefore considered safe.)Although arnica cant be prescribed by doctors in Canada, some highly recommend it, including plastic surgeons. When its taken orally, it helps reduce inflammation, bruising and swelling, which all lead to pain, says Jamil Ahmad, a plastic surgeon in Mississauga. What that means is that feweror noadditional pain medications may be required to soothe discomfort. Ahmad says he and the other doctors in his clinic recommend arnica in part to reduce patients need for narcotics like OxyContin or Percocet, particularly because theyve been overprescribed, overused and shown to be highly addictive. In some cases, patients can alleviate their post-operative pain with a combination of acetaminophen (a.k.a. Tylenol) and arnica.Surgery patients who use arnica supplements typically take them before their procedure and immediately after, until the discomfort subsides. That helps to reduce the onset of swelling, or the development of swelling, and also helps address it once its there, says Ahmad. Topical arnica can be used immediately after surgery to help reduce bruises and swelling in areas without any open wounds. For example, its sometimes recommended before and after rhinoplasty to help heal bruising and swelling around the eyes and nose. And it really worksa 2019 study by the Annals of Plastic Surgery saw a decrease in postoperative swelling for patients who used arnica after surgery on the nose.Arnica should be used according to the directions on the label, or following the advice of your practitioner. The capsules come in different forms, such as 6c, 15c and 30c (the c standing for Hahnemannian centesimal scale unit of dilutions)the higher the number, the stronger the supplement, making it better suited for more severe discomfort. While arnica cream or ointment may cause skin irritation, its extremely rare.Ahmad says that he routinely prescribes oral arnica to patients undergoing surgery, and sometimes prescribes topical arnica. In his 13 years of practicing at his clinic, which sees about 1,000 patients annually, Ahmad says hes never dealt with any adverse reaction from either form of arnica.Arnica topicals and supplements are available at most Canadian health food stores and pharmacies. My own go-tos are from French company Boironit makes all its products in a factory located just outside of Lyon, using freshly harvested arnica. Today, I try to always keep arnica cream or pellets nearbyjust in case a table leg or bedpost jumps in my path, again.Laberge is a convert, too. I always have it in my purse. Whenever she has a small accident, Larberge takes a few arnica pellets immediately to help reduce pain, inflammation and other trauma from the injury. Is it 100 percent effective at reducing pain? I would say no, but it helps, she says.Next: These All-Natural Home Remedies Can Help Boost Your Energy

The Allure of Romance Novels in 2023 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/spicy-booktok/ Mon, 15 May 2023 11:00:57 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67184061 Sexy romance books are all over TikTok, which has led to a surge in demand for such spicy reads. Here's why so many women are reaching for them right now.

About a year and a half into the pandemic, 39-year-old stay-at-home mom of two Karen Whaley picked up a buzzy romance novel and zipped through all 300-plus pages in one evening. It was an unusual experience for her.Whaley had been stuck in an all-too-familiar cycle: I was doomscrolling all the time, she says. I had also totally lost my ability to focus on anythingI wasnt reading books or watching TV. I couldnt even bring myself to start. But after hearing about The Hating Game by Sally Thorne on a podcast and being intrigued by its workplace-drama plot, Whaley downloaded the e-bookand then couldnt set it aside. The sudden voraciousness for reading surprised hershed never been into romance books. In fact, she had thought she was too good for the genre. But while reading The Hating Game, Whaley realized it was fascinating to delve into the lives of women who were very different from her. After finishing the book, Whaley tore through 20 more romances in three months. It opened me up to reading other genres. I was somehow getting my focus back.Turns out, many people found themselves revelling in steamy romance books during the pandemic. Romance fiction sales in Canada saw a 44 percent increase from June 2020 to June 2021, thanks in part to TikTok. In the first few months of 2023, the popular hashtag #BookTok, where readers share their recommendations and reviews, had passed 115 billion views. Most videos on #BookTok feature a reader who raves about a novel, often getting emotional. The intimate and honest tone of the videos encourages viewers to buy the book, leading to a massive boost in sales. Its word-of-mouth marketing cranked to a hundred: One viral video can garner millions of viewsand sales. Rania Husseini, senior vice president of print at Indigo, Canadas largest bookstore, says the chain has seen an extraordinary surge in demand for books thanks to BookTok. Picks from Spicy BookTok, the online community thats gathered around sexually explicit romance novels, have gained significant traction over the past two years in particular, notes Husseini. From 2020 to 2022, the total unit sales of books at Indigo categorized under Spicy BookTok rose 3,104 percent. And despite their trendy-looking covers, these books dont differ significantly from the bodice rippers of yesteryear (you know, the ones with Fabio on the cover). Theyre still romance novels with fairly predictable plots involving two people (usually a man and a woman) falling in love and having outrageous sex. Plus, tropes that are common to BookTok favouriteslike haters-to-lovers or second-chance romancesare the same ones that have been well-loved in Harlequin romances and romantic comedies for as long as the genres have existed.Jenny Pool, owner of Happily Ever Books Canadas only romance-focused online bookstorehas heard from many readers who say theyve turned to romance over the last couple of years because the books provide an escape. Its the emotional interplay between a couple that draws people in, rather than any intricate plot, says Pool. Its not about the destination, what happens at the end of the book. Its the journey that two or more characters go onthats what were interested in, thats what the best part of a romance is. Its getting to explore different dynamics. But the sexy content is a draw, too. Hanna Wheeler, a 41-year-old writer and translator in Toronto, says that other peoples desire is what draws her to these books. Its an inspiration, having these really open conversations about sexuality and turn-ons, she says. The sexual content provides her with tools on how to initiate conversations about sex and relationships in her own lifeespecially those books with a lightheartedness in how characters approach their love life.In addition to the escapism, readers can also be turned on by romance novels, says Jan Cioe, a registered psychologist and an associate professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia. For some, the books can provide an idea of something new and different, he explains. He echoes Wheelers notion that risqu reads can be a sort of inspiration. Typically, most womenbut certainly not allneed some kind of nurturing towards [sex], Cioe says, and that can happen in the context of reading these novels, because they create sexual arousal that can then be manifested in a physical encounter.(Related:Are Your Sexual Fantasies Normal?)However, Cioe points out, trouble can arise when readers take their favourite novels content as reality. Some BookTok bestsellers, like Colleen Hoovers It Ends with Us, depict rough and violent sexual encounters and toxic (usually male) love interests, which some critics say can romanticize unhealthy relationships. Rough sex is not inherently negative, but it shouldnt be idealized or depicted as the best or only kind of sex, and expressing consent is key (something many of the books gloss over). Unfortunately, in our culture, theres pressure for women to…placate their partner, says Cioe. Many romance novels are written by women with female pleasure in mind, but they are designed to be entertainmentnot education. Conflating the sometimes extreme sexual content in a book with what youor your partnersmight want in real life can lead to unhealthy relationship dynamics. To prevent that, its important to know your own comfort zones. Optimal sexual encounters are grounded in clear lines of communication, says Cioe.Pool notes that these reads give people the opportunity to explore situations safelywhether its a sweeping love story or a short-lived affair. And, you know that its all going to work out okay in the end. It gives a little bit of relief, and you can really enjoy the journey the characters go on, she says. You know that therell be a happily ever after.Spicy Booktok Selects

University Avenue in Toronto is lined with several major hospitals, but nestled inside one of themUniversity Health Networks Toronto Rehabilitation Instituteis a fully functioning apartment, plopped right there on the twelfth floor amid a sea of standard office cubicles. The one-bedroom apartment has no ceilings, and is lined with cameras, domestic robots and motion-sensing detectors designed to keep residents safe as they age, recover from stroke or seek to live independently with a disability or dementia (for example). The home within a lab is also designed to replicate the same accessibility challenges that seniors and their caregivers would encounter in a typical home, so researchers can test out creative solutions to common barriers.Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 7Yes, its all a bit Big Brother-y, but the catwalk, the robot and the video cameras are there in the name of science. This is where Atena Roshan Fekr and her team of grad students at the KITE Research Institute HomeLab test out new products, design artificial intelligence data programs and build prototypes aimed at helping the 92 percent of Canadians aged 45-plus who would prefer to age in place, as opposed to living in a long-term care facility, according to a 2022 Ipsos poll.Roshan Fekr specializes in the intersection of technology and aging. The KITE HomeLab is one of four institutions across Canada that make up a project called PATH: the Program to Accelerate Technologies for Home Care. Roshan Fekr and her colleagues develop and test these remote monitoring systems so that they can, one day, be successfully commercialized. The data gathered will also be super valuable to doctors, and busy or far-away relatives and caregivers trying to get a sense of how their loved one is doing on their own. The clinician or the family members will be notified if theres a problem, or if they are progressing, says Roshan Fekr. Here are some of the apartment’s features that can help keep seniors safe.(Related: 5 of the Best Exercise Bikes for Seniors)Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 9

Cameras or catwalk

From the catwalk, and using the video camera footage, researchers can observe volunteer actors who imitate the typical behaviours, movements and reactions of those with physical disabilities or sensory and cognitive impairments as they interact with a standard residential space.Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 10

Helpful robot

This domestic robot gives both audio and video prompts to people with dementia during their common everyday tasks, like washing their hands, brushing their teeth, or making a cup of tea, says scientist Alex Mihailidis. It uses artificial intelligence to adapt to the needs of the individual user.Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 2

Smart sheets

The mat on the bed measures health data such as heart rate and respiration rate, says Roshan Fekr. It can also monitor sleeping position and can alert a caregiver that its time to help turn the patient to prevent pressure sores (aka bed sores).Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 12

Grab bars

Standard accessibility grab bars help seniors navigate safely from the bedroom to the bathroom especially at night, when visibility and mental alertness may be limited.Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 11

Bathroom monitoring

Roshan Fekr and her colleagues will soon be testing a device that tracks toilet use and measures a residents level of hydration and output.Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 8

Exercise mat

This smart yoga mat is used to record physical therapy sessions. Tele-rehab allows seniors to recover at home (from a hip replacement or a stroke, for example) without needing to drive or commute to a hospital or PT office as an outpatient. The camera over the TV monitors body alignment, and the pressure heat as a patient does exercises on the fitness mat also creates data points.Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 3

Smart garment

This wearable, washable shirt from Hexoskin can measure vital signs such as heart rate, breathing rate and the residents ECG (or electrocardiogram, which can monitor heart conditions), as well as general activity like total daily steps and calories burned.Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 6

Outlet plugs

Remote users (such as a family member) can turn off an appliance thats been accidentally left on (using Wi-Fi and a phone app). They can also monitor activity levels around the apartment by detecting whats plugged in where and for how long.Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 5

Drawer, oven, microwave and fridge sensors

The kitchen drawers, cupboards, microwave, oven and refrigerator are equipped with door contact sensors that track when a resident is opening and closing them. This gathers data that can be helpful to families worried their loved one isnt eating or drinking enoughor concerned about safety in the kitchen.Kite Lab Safety For Seniors 82

Living room floors

For a future project, the floors will be equipped with pressure sensors that can monitor a seniors movement patterns and log changes to their gait (which is a possible sign of deteriorating health).Next:5 Stretching Exercises for Seniorsor Anyone Who Feels Achy

A Former Mayor-Turned-Doctor on Second Careers and Being a Lifelong Learner https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/mayor-doctor-second-careers/ Mon, 08 May 2023 11:00:04 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67183975 Karina Pillay on going to medical school mid-life and becoming a family doctor after leading her small town through a wildfire

My parents escaped South Africa during apartheid and came to Canada, so I grew up in Slave Lake, a rural community of about 6,000 people in northern Alberta. In a place that size, you learn to get along with everybody. After I finished high school, I went to the University of Alberta in Edmonton, then applied for medical school and was rejected many times. So I returned to Slave Lake. I worked in forestry and adult education. After university, I got married to my junior high school sweetheart, Bill. His family had a business in oil and gas. We took over the business and grew it to 15 employees, but its a tough industry to work in. There are many things to worry aboutthe cold, worker safety, addictions. We enjoyed the challenge but, at a certain point, we recognized it was no longer fulfilling for us. We decided to shut it down.Id been working for the town part-time as a coordinator. It was quite toxiclots of bullying and unethical behaviour. It hit me that this was not the type of environment I wanted to work in. I decided to run for mayor. I wanted to reset the culture and build strength in our community. I was 33. Some people didnt take me seriously because of my age. Other candidates said it was nice to see young people getting involved. But I put together a large team and we door-knocked relentlessly. I was strategic about getting the vote out. In the end, I had more votes than all the men combined.(Related: How One Woman Connects to Her Culture Through Gardening)I was elected mayor first in 2004 and won two more elections after that. In 2011, midway through my third term, a major wildfire broke out on the outskirts of town. I met with my team in the town office, a building wed built one year prior. Someone ran in and shouted, The roofs on fire! Fierce 100 kilometre-per-hour winds were carrying balls of fire through the sky and into the town. Something inside me kicked in at that moment. I didnt think about my own life or my safety, I only thought about what we needed to do for our community. As we were running out of the building, fire was falling from the sky. But my focus never changed. We had a sense of duty to our community. We worked through the night for days on end with very little sleep. You learn very quickly to check your ego at the door and look for the common goal.At the time, the Slave Lake fire was the second largest weather disaster in Canadian history: One third of the towns buildings burnt to the ground. The fire changed the lives of everyone who lived through it. It was hard and horrible, but we benefited from a remarkable wave of support from Alberta, across Canada and the globe. From the start, we were laser-focused on rebuilding. By March 2013, wed rebuilt the town hall. We created a manuscript for other municipalities about our lessons learned from the disaster, which has, sadly, been used for guidance many times since then. In Western Canada, we experienced multiple significant disasters that eclipsed the Slave Lake firethe 2013 flooding in southern Alberta, the 2016 fires in Fort McMurray and a series of wildfires and heatwaves across British Columbia.Through all of this, medicine was still on my mind. During my last summer as mayor, as the new town hall was going up, I started studying for the medical school entrance exam again. It was an enormous challenge. I was using textbooks from 20 years ago. But the skills that I had developed as mayorleadership, community building, resource managementhelped me to get into medical school. I started at the University of Calgary in the summer of 2013.My rule is that I dont doubt myself until I give something a go. You dont know until you try it. Life is about learning and trying, again and again. Be a lifetime learner.Medical school was tough. I was 42 when I started. When I walked into my first class, I carried a pen and paper, and everyone else brought their laptop. (I bought a Mac later that week.) You dont get breaks for being a mature student. You work the same hours as everyone.I was drawn to family medicine, so I joined a practice in Calgary. I like challenges, and its a challenge. Family doctors help manage someones health, but we also help with social issues because were looking at the preventative side.Id just completed my second year of practice when the pandemic struck. It has not been an easy ride. Its a joy and a privilege to be part of someones journey, but I would say that this is probably the toughest career Ive been in. It can consume you, with its need for constant empathy and compassion. I worry so much about my patientsjust like I worried about my community as mayor. But as a physician, you have to learn how to set boundaries from work. You could be there more than 10 hours a day, every day.Im planning to keep doing this for a while. That said, I do have my next career challenge in mind. Ive applied to become a member of the Canadian Senate. Since 2016, Canadians can apply to the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments. This body is designed to ensure that senators are non-partisan and reflect Canadas diversity. I dont know if Ill be considered. But for me, one of the roles of a senator is to represent vulnerable populations. As a woman of colour, I would not take that responsibility lightly. It would even mean leaving medicine, because I couldnt do both jobs. As a family doctor, you need to be there for your patients.I feel like Ive lived multiple lives with all my experiences. I got here by being a lifelong learner and keeping my mind open to experiencing new things. When I graduated from medical school, I was asked to speak at our graduation. My message remains true: You may have graduated, but you are a learner still. Be kind to others who are learningyou will be learning from them, too.Next: I Joined the Navy Reserves at 51

This story is part of Best Healths Preservation series, which spotlights wellness businesses and practices rooted in culture, community and history. When Ronke Edoho moved to Canada from Nigeria more than 15 years ago, one of the first things she noticed was the fruit for sale in grocery stores. The apples were perfect, round and glistening. Sometimes they had travelled a long distance to get to the aisles of her local market in Saskatchewan. This was strange for Edoho, whose food had previously come from her grandparents backyard in Kwara State, Nigeria. I always felt like I was only one step removed from my food source, she says. But in Canada, the fruit and vegetables looked nothing like the ones she pulled out of that backyard growing up. Everything was packaged; nothing was misshapen. So, in 2013, when Edoho got married and bought a home in Saskatoon, she started a backyard garden to connect with her childhood experience. She began by planting tomatoes and peppers, then moved on to ingredients that are hard to source in Canada but are essential to her favourite traditional Nigerian meals. She planted amaranth greens, a leafy vegetable thats a staple ingredient in Nigerian dishes like efo riro, a vegetable soup cooked with palm oil. Next, she experimented with jute leaves and waterleaf, which are used in soups like ewedu and edikang ikong and eaten with pounded starches like yam or cassava.Edoho already had a successful food blog called 9jafoodie (9ja is colloquial shorthand for Nigeria) and an active online community where she shared Nigerian recipes. So when she started posting pictures of the haulon Instagram, she was inundated with requests. People started asking, Is this something I can do for myself? Can you teach me how to do it? says Edoho. In 2021 she launched a new website, Jollof Code, as a shop, educational resource centre and visual diary of her own gardening journey. She shares videos of how she builds her garden beds and the progress of her fruits and vegetables. And, in addition to selling seeds for Nigerian vegetables like garden egg and waterleaf, she also offers courses on how to grow those vegetables anywhere in the world. So far, despite the challenges of growing Nigerian vegetables in chilly Canada, Edoho has been successful with her gardenbut not without hard work and experimentation.I wanted the authentic flavour of some of those things, [so] I went into the research. Like, what is the growing season? she says. And then I started experimenting with different kinds of soil and watering cycles. When she noticed that ladybugs loved to snack on her amaranth greens, for example, Edoho grew morethe insects act as a form of pest control against other, more harmful critters in her garden. For vegetables like Nsukka pepper, which thrives in the tropical weather of southeastern Nigeria, Edoho works around Saskatoons frigid winter and short summer by starting the seeds indoors as early as February, then transferring them outdoors when the weather warms up.On top of learning how to grow Nigerian food, people are looking for a way to connect with home, says Edoho. Its not just food for nourishment. Its a connection to a time in the past. She uses her platform to share knowledge about specific cultural foodsknowledge that is often lost with immigration. I feel like my generation are like city folks two generations in. A lot of people didnt have the opportunity to grow up on a farm or around chickens or goats. I love sharing that knowledge, she says.Edoho also relishes the chance to share what Nigerian food is like. As a student at the University of Saskatchewan, she started blogging to dispel misconceptions about Nigerian food that media organizations in North America and Europe often present as facts: I still remember one [article] vividly that said African food is made with poorer qualities of goat, beef and fish. The statement shocked and annoyed her, so she decided to do something about it. Theres a lot the West does not know about us. And our food is just one [thing], says Edoho. I wanted to start something to educate people about the richness of the food. My dad tells me all the time: If something is not the way you like it, either you fix it, or you keep quiet. Luckily for fans of Nigerian food and gardening, Edoho spoke out. This story is part of Best HealthsPreservation series, which spotlights wellness businesses and practices rooted in culture, community and history. So I bought new running shoes, got two giant bags of rice for lifting and started training in a deserted parking garage.

The night I walked into the HMCS Donnacona basea cavernous, nondescript building just south of downtown Montrealfor my enrolment as a 51-year-old Navy recruit, a well-meaning officer mistakenly offered to escort me to the ceremony room, congratulating me on my childs recruitment. His eyes widened as I corrected him. He apologized politely, but this was not the last time I would mumble an explanation to a confused stranger under my breathalways some version of I-know-I-am-old-and-frumpy-and-wearing-a-pink-cardigan-but-I-joined-the-Navy-anyhowwhile somehow both laughing and crying a little bit on the inside. To be fair, not even I fully believed I should be there. Not at first. Four years earlier, in 2018, I had undergone a preventative double mastectomy. (I didnt have breast cancer, but it runs in my family and I swore I would do anything I could to prevent it.) After the surgery, it was truly torturous to do any movement that required more upper-body strength than youd use to open a jar of pickles, so I hadnt exercised in ages. I had also indulged in a lot of pandemic pizza, packing on what I lovingly referred to as my bodys own weighted comfort blanket. Two years before that, I had gone through a tricky divorce (is there any other kind?), which left me feeling defeated, depleted and directionlessa ship without a rudder.I wish I could say it was these huge life changes and a desire to serve my country that led me to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), but, if Im being honest, it had far more to do with my bank account. Single again at mid-life, I was in need of a solid career, preferably one with security and a pension. Enter the Canadian government job site.As I scrolled through the listings, my eyes would glaze over as words like data or administrative whipped by. Then I saw something about communications. It went on to mention travel, adventure and a pension. I was intrigued. Naval Communicators establish and manage all external voice, radio-teletype and data circuits, and provide real-time tactical information in support of operations, it read.I focused on the fact that Im a writera professional communicatorwho loves information. How hard could this be? I thought, somewhat naively. Only later did I bother reading the fine print about Basic Training, and learn how hard it is to qualify for the job.For a while, sanity resumed and I went on to apply to a number of landlubbing, pushup-free data admin roles. But something was gnawing away at me, and over the next several weeks I kept clicking back on the original link. What if I told myself I could do this, and believed it? Perhaps its a mid-life clich, but I had just finished reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert for the umpteenth timea book that explores the idea of living a life that is driven by curiosity rather than fear.I was curious about working for the CAF, which surprised me. I spent ages poring over the website and learning about recent Navy missions, particularly Canadas humanitarian response to the Syrian refugee crisis. And when I later asked the recruiting officers, in person, about the CAFs history of racism, misogyny and sexual misconduct, I was surprised at how candid and painstakingly committed they seemed to being more transparent and more inclusive in order to create a safer workplace for all.(Related: Im a 40-Something-Year-Old Skateboarderand TikTok Sensation)To this day, I still wonder why I kept returning to that website. The truest answer Ive come up with so far is that it made me think, Maybe, when we are feeling helpless, the idea of helping others is all we can cling to. The next steps were clearly outlined: Apply online, take the aptitude test, meet for a one-on-one interview and then pass the gruelling physical FORCE evaluation. This includes a simulation of real-life scenarios that members of the CAF may find themselves in: things like sandbag hauling, sprints and shuttle runs. Easy-peasy, right?I took the required time to recover from my mastectomy surgeries (there were three in total) and slowly started training. I bought a few 30-pound bags of rice to use for lifting, sprung for a new pair of trainers, found a deserted indoor parking lot and made a Beyonc playlist. It felt good to challenge myself physically again and to learn what this new body was capable of. I surprised myself and passed it all, and was offered a job.I decided to join as a part-time naval communicator reserve, rather than as a full-time member of the force, and will complete the rest of my training concurrently over the next four years. This means Ill still get the pension and the adventure, but I will also have the flexibility to decide how much time I spend abroad (a choice those in the regular force do not have). Though my sons, aged 20 and 22, are very independent, Im not ready to live away from them for extended periods yet.I have already completed the first of the three Basic Training modules remotely (it was a series of online units focused on the mission and ethos of the CAF). The second module, which Im halfway through, is three months of in-person workshops and drill instruction. Eventually, Ill head to Quebec City for the final module. This is the one that every army movie depicts: three weeks of climbing, cussing, muddy obstacle courses and marching while carrying a 50-pound backpack, shoulder to shoulder with fellow recruits half my age.Once completed, Ill head to the East Coast for the Navy-specific course, and, finally, an eight-week trade-specific course. Members of the Naval Reserves are only required to participate in weekly training at our local bases, though we can elect to do four months of active missions per year. When the timing is right, Ill have opportunities to explore Canadas coastlines and travel across the world. Its been a year since I enrolled. Though we are a diverse unitfour men, three women, ranging in age from 18 to 51 (me), with varying educational and professional backgroundswe have quickly learned that we need to share our strengths and skills with one another in order to succeed. If my uniform has a visible wrinkle, we all do pushups. Ditto for not taking an order from a superior fast enough. We have to trust one another and follow our commanding officer without question, which is hard for meIve always resisted authority figures and I question everything. Have you ever met a writer before? I seethed, after I was disciplined for asking too many questions. More pushups.I started this journey hyper-focused on myself and what I wanted everyone to see: A Strong-Ass Woman Doing Fine On Her Own. I was worried the others would view me as the oldest, weakest link, but the crows feet around my eyes and the greys sprinkling my ponytail do not earn me a second of grace from the instructors when it comes to dropping and doing planks. And the punishmentseven the pushupshave helped my whole unit develop a keen sense of camaraderie and trust. If we support each other, we do better. If anything, I think me being older, and a mom, has grounded us as a unit. Im not quite bringing homemade bran muffins to drill practices, but I am often the one encouraging those who are struggling to take a moment and refocus.Somewhere along the way, I became far more focused on finding my purpose and developing a sense of teamworklike helping my unit learn how to tie a reef knot properly. (This is a skill my mom actually taught me when I was in Girl Guides, but its quite useful in the Navy!) I may not be the cool kid doing one-handed G.I. Jane-style pushups, but I was able to advocate for my entire squad and successfully petition for paid bonus training sessions for all of us.When I think of my body now, it feels capable and functional. I can run five kilometres without getting winded, and I no longer have to ask one of my sons to open pickle jars for me. And, just last week, my youngest conveniently announced that my not-quite-bulging biceps probably meant I was all clear to resume snow-shovelling duties again.Aside from the physical changes, there have also been smaller, invisible victories: The Navy taught me that my worth and ability to contribute to society in a meaningful way is not tied to my age, my gender or my size. And it also taught me that, even if the direction my life is now taking is not the one I had mapped out one unhappy marriage ago, I am not destined to be lost forever. Im proud to say I am a Naval Reserves recruit, and I dont plan to abandon ship any time soon.Next: This Yogi Will Make You Want to Take Up Surfing

In the summer of 2004, I was an intern at the Los Angeles Times. I kept hearing about Chris Snow, one of the star interns from years past. Later, I got an internship at the Boston Globe, where he was a reporter covering the Boston Red Sox. This guy is everywhere I go, I thought. When we finally met, he had pretty eyes and a nice smile. That was it. We got engaged the next summer. In 2011, I was pregnant with our first baby when Chris was offered a dream job as director of video and statistical analysis for the Calgary Flames. We moved to Canada when our son was five weeks old. Our daughter was born three years later. When we were dating, Chris told me that ALS ran in his family. Its a devastating neuromuscular disease with a life expectancy of six to 12 months. ALS mostly occurs sporadically, but about 10 percent of cases are genetic. Thats how it is in Chriss family. In 2003, his uncle died from the disease; another uncle died a decade later. In 2016, Chriss 28-year-old cousin died. Two years later, ALS took Chriss dad from us.Chris had a chance of having the genetic mutation that causes ALS, but we didnt know if he didit was always a question. Then, in 2019, when he was 37 and I was 35, he started to have numbness in two fingers on his right hand. Anyone else would have thought it was a pinched nerve, but we were on high alert. We immediately started looking for a diagnosis. It takes, on average, more than a year to be diagnosed with ALS, which means most patients are unable to join what few clinical trials there are while they still have time. If youve had symptoms for any length of time, you become ineligible for many drug trials. These trials are designed for very select patients who are most likely to benefitso its usually people who are in the earliest stages of the disease. We moved quickly. That June, we flew to the University of Miami to see a specialist in familial ALS who had cared for Chriss dad. It was the first time wed both been away from our kids overnight. They were four and seven, and it was Fathers Day. We couldnt tell them that we were going to find out if Daddy had the same illness that Grandpa Bob died from. We said it was a work trip and I was tagging along.Chris went through testing and then we sat in a little room with the doctor. He told us that Chris was in the early stages of ALS. In the next breath, he told us that the first step was for us to join a clinical trialChris qualified for the first-ever stage three ASL trial for gene therapy.I dont know if the doctor ever said the word hope, but thats what I deduced: We could have hope. Right away, I knew our story would be different because very few families with this disease ever get hope. Most people are told to go home, do what you love, get your affairs in order and die.We were so scared, but we leaned hard into hope. Chris had a one-in-three chance of being on the placebo. A one-in-three chance is devastating when your life expectancy is less than a year. I look back on that time and wonder how we kept putting one foot in front of the other, not knowing. But we were pretty sure he was not on placebo because we saw an immediate slowing of the progression of his disease. That October, Chris stepped onto the ice with our son, Cohen, for hockey practice for the first time since the changes in his hand. Chris hadnt been able to get his hockey glove to stay on because his right hand just flopped around. But the equipment manager for the Flames molded Chriss glove into a fist. Chris also wore a hand brace and I used a hair tie to hold the glove onto the brace. But then when he shot the puck, it lifted into the air and pinged off the crossbar! I knew then he wasnt on the placebo. In the fall of 2019, Chris was promoted to assistant general manager of the Flames, and we went public with his diagnosis in December. I started writing about it on my blog, Kelsie Snow Writes. As I kept writing, people sent me messages about their grief and their own sad stories. At first, I found myself running hard from any sad story. I didnt want to hear it. I wanted to stay locked in this world where we had the special sauce and everything was going to go well for us, and we were going to be the exception. But thats not how this works. It took time to accept that. This is a lonely place to bethis place of your husband never getting better. One of the hardest things about an illness (or a loss or tragedy) is the notion that nobody understands. Everyone elses lives are still going on. And youre here, socked into your own misery and nobody sees you. I realized I wanted to be around people who understood how I felt, the people who made me feel like I could keep moving. To feel supported, I needed the stories of others. I needed to hear how people survive loss. So I started a podcast, Sorry, Im Sad. I talk to people about their sad stories, and I feel lighter for having difficult conversations. I dont ever feel like Im weighed down by somebody elses story. In the beginning, I thought maybe the medicine was enough; that Chriss ALS was not going to progress. But its been really hard lately. About nine months after we started on the trial, I went to take a picture of him and our daughter, Willa, and I noticed that his smile had a little droop. That started an aggressive cascade of losses, including control of his facial muscles. He lost his ability to smile, raise his eyebrows, make expressions. Chris said it was like being diagnosed all over again.Speaking is getting more difficult. He cant project or make hard consonant sounds. He lost his ability to swallow, and we worry about him choking, so now he uses a feeding tube.Weve dealt with a lot of scary things, like aspiration pneumonia and emergency rooms and the ICU. Weve been sad and tired and angry. We have all these problems that we have to troubleshoot, and we have to grieve whatever the latest loss was.Im settling into this realization that, yes, it is a huge miracle that Chris is still alive. But hes never going to get better. You wonder if people still want to hear about it.I focus on the small moments. The other day, I watched my daughter stick her hand out the car window, moving it through the air like a wave. And I thought, Thats what Im here for. These moments. What we have right now is beautiful.Next: Caring For My Dying Mom Showed Me That Caregivers Need More Support, Too

Why I’m Trading Dry January for “Damp” 2023 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/how-to-drink-less-alcohol/ Thu, 02 Mar 2023 12:00:51 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67183546 Given Canada’s new health guidelines, cutting back on alcohol is more important than ever. Here’s how I’m moderating my alcohol intake, instead of cutting out my favourite bevvies completely.

The post Why I’m Trading Dry January for “Damp” 2023 appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
Ive always caught up with friends over glasses of wine or pints of beer. But lately, Ive been spilling the tea over, well, actual cups of tea instead. Turns out, its just as satisfying and much better for me, too. That doesnt mean Ive given up alcohol completely. I decided 2023 would be the year that I drink less. So, instead of starting the year off with Dry January, in which I wouldnt allow myself to have a single glass of alcohol, Im doing Damp 2023, where I consciously reduce my alcohol consumption all year long.I have many reasons for cutting back. First and foremost, the updated guidelines from the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) recommend women have no more than two drinks a week to avoid an increased risk of seven types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and liver disease. Its a pretty drastic reduction from the 2011 guidelines, which recommended women have no more than two drinks a day to reduce long-term health risks, so Im feeling a push to modify my habits.(Related: A Science-Backed, Data-Forward, Awfully Sobering Guide for Women Who Drink Alcohol)While alcohol is harmful to everybody, it can have worse impacts on some people. Ive always considered myself a lightweightmeaning, I feel drunker, faster than most people. And this is, in fact, a thing. People respond differently to alcohol, says Scott Hadland, a physician at Mass General Brigham in Massachusetts. For instance, people who have a lower weight may have more difficulty tolerating alcohol, as do people who dont drink much alcohol, he says, which may lead to more injuries and health issues.Plus, Im Chinese and suffer from occasional bouts of Asian flush. If I drink too quickly, or too much, my face (and, sometimes my whole body) turns red, accompanied by a quickened heart rate and a headache. According to a 2015 study published in Cancer Epidemiology, the alcohol flushing response means Im at greater risk of esophageal cancer. Turning red is, quite literally, my bodys way of telling me to stop drinking. So, why am I not cutting out alcohol completely? Banning things I love has never worked for meI will unapologetically succumb to any cookie or French fry because lifes about enjoying things you love. Alcohol is something I like consuming, so I dont want to give it up. According to dietitian Abby Langer, I dont necessarily need to. In her book Good Food, Bad Diet, (which she talked to Best Health about) she says she advises her clients to indulge in food cravings responsibly to reduce feelings of guilt or shame. Also, when you never let yourself enjoy the things you love, you get miserable AF, she says. Since I have a healthy relationship with alcohol, Im not going to let myself feel guilty about enjoying a glass of wine, pint of beer or cocktail once in a while.A couple of months into Damp 2023, Ive already seen promising results. Overall, Im drinking about a third of what I used to consume. I dont have a hard limit of what I can consume each week, but on average its one or two drinks.I cant say its been easyIve had to change my habits, including how I drink at home and how I make healthy choices when Im out with friends. And Ive found that moderate drinking, and being mindful of how much alcohol Im consuming, takes a little hacking and planning. So, here are the tricks that have helped me reduce my alcohol intake.

At home:

Opt for canned wine: When on my own, opening a bottle of wine compels me to finish it on subsequent evenings, which means Im clocking four servings of alcohol well before the week is through. A can of wine allows me to have one to two glasses, with zero regrets of wasting anyor drinking more than I wanted.Stock up on non-alcoholic options: How are you supposed to encourage yourself to opt for an alcohol-free drink when you have no enticing options on hand? Explore the flavoured sparkling water aisle, invest in some alcohol-free spirits and make your choices more appealing.Find a new way to unwind: If you usually celebrate the end of your workday with a glass of wine, adopt a new habit, like enjoying a bath, a fitness class or a gummy. The trick to actually follow through? Remind yourself of the reasons youre moderating your approach to drinking, says Terri-Lynn MacKay, a registered psychologist and clinical director of Alavida, a virtual care app for substance abuse. Put stickies on your fridge, record a voice prompt on your phone or write in a journal, she says.

At a bar or restaurant:

Choose a spritzer or low-alcohol cocktail: Less-boozy options are appearing more often on cocktail menus. If theyre not listed, just ask the bartender, or try a wine spritzer (great for weddings or events with limited choice) or a liqueur and soda (like a spritz but without the sparkling wine). Campari is my go-to liqueur, but vermouth, St. Germain (elderflower liqueur) and Aperol are also great options. If a 142 ml (5 oz) wine spritzer is made with half wine, half soda, youre only consuming half of a serving of alcohol, according to CCSA guidelines. The same goes for liqueursthe CCSA says one serving of spirits (whisky, vodka, gin) is 43 ml (1.5 oz) of a 40 percent alcohol spirit. But since liqueurs clock in at 11 to 25 percent alcohol, your serving size of alcohol goes down by a similar proportion.Order a half-pint of beer or a low-ABV (alcohol by volume) beer: These arent always advertised, but most bars will be happy to pour you a smaller serving. And most menus have their beers ABV percentage listed. If not, ask your bartender, or go for a radler or session ale, which are lower in alcohol.Eat before you drink: Having some food, like a fatty, carby snack, before drinking helps you better tolerate alcohol so you can make better decisions, like whether or not youll have another drink. This easy strategy slows down the speed at which alcohol hits your system, says MacKay. Wait until after the appetizer arrives to order your first drink, or have a snack at home before you leave if you anticipate drinking right away. Nuts, peanut butter or cheese are handy to put in the stomach before eating, explains MacKay. Chips are good too because they have a higher fat content.

Tips in general:

Experiment with different low or no-ABV brands: If youve tried one non-alcoholic beer and werent a fan, dont write off them allthere are many options on store shelves these days, and youre sure to find one you like. If you need a place to start, try Partake and Libra for beer, Frico and Joiy for canned wines, and Sobrii and Lyres for non-alc spirits.Set weekly consumption goals: Make choices about when and where you will drink in advance, says MacKay. If I plan to drink for a friends birthday on the weekend, Ill opt not to drink during the week.Change your habits: Try to better understand the function alcohol serves when you want to drink, says MacKay. Are you using alcohol to reduce stress, lubricate social situations, enhance your libido, manage negative emotions? If so, you may want to find other ways to meet those needs. For me, Ive found catch-ups with friends to be equally enjoyable without alcohol. While Im only a few months into Damp 2023, its going well. Im sleeping better, I feel great having fewer hangovers to contend with, and Im saving a bit of money when I go out. I still drink on occasion (a friends birthday, for example), but I can better appreciate the times that I do drink. Plus, Im getting more comfortable with socializing without alcohol, too.Next: Not Drinking Alcohol? No Problem. Add These Drinks to Your Bar Cart

There’s Something in the Air…You’re Breathing https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/indoor-air-pollution-in-canada/ Mon, 30 Jan 2023 12:00:44 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67183208 Here’s how to stay on top of these five indoor air problems and breathe easier this winter and beyond.

On a lark last winter, our family borrowed a friends radon detector to check levels of the radioactive gas inside our Kelowna home. I had heard that radon could be a concern in BCs Okanagan Valley, but I didnt really think wed be impacted. But as soon as we deciphered the strange new units of measurement on the monitor (Becquerels per metre cubed), we realized we had a big problem: our readings ranged from 600 to 2,400. Acceptable numbers in Canada are under 200 Bq/m3, so our house was exposing us to between three and 12 times the acceptable amount of the potentially deadly gas, depending on the day and whether we were in the basement or upstairs. After some frantic Google searches (such as radon, deadly?) and more than a little freaking outfact: radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and accounts for 16 percent of lung cancer deaths in Canada annuallywe called in a radon mitigation expert. He fixed the problem by sealing our basement crawl space with plastic and venting the gas out of the house. We know that houses are being built to meet new energy standards, says Graeme Cooper, owner of Point-The-Way Radon Services, a radon testing and mitigation company in the Okanagan Valley. Theyre better insulated, but these household contaminants can more readily build up in the home. A house thats essentially better-sealed traps the radon. Larger-footprint homes cover more ground (literally) and can bring in more radon from the soil or bedrock.Since Canadians spend 90 percent of their time indoors, its important to ensure that the air inside your sanctuary is as clean as possible. But depending on where your home is located, how its built, and what youre doing inside it, indoor air quality can be compromised.Radon isnt the only thing we need to be aware of as we head into winter, says Tara Kahan, an indoor air quality expert and Canada Research Chair in Environmental Analytical Chemistry at the University of Saskatchewan. A lot of pollutants can get up to quite a few times higher indoors than outdoors. These are the top five indoor air quality problems, according to the expertsand what to do about them.(Related: The Worst Canadian Cities for Air Pollution)

Radon

Radon is released from the radioactive decay of uranium, radium and thorium, which are present in soil and bedrock in Canada. All buildings have some amount of radon, but according to 2012 data from Health Canada, seven percent of homes have high levels. (Updated data will be coming out in late 2022.) Whats more, radon can vary from home to home, even in the same neighbourhood, and more data is needed to see what levels are like across Canada. Cooper says that in the Okanagan region, where he is, tests indicate its actually closer to one third of homes, but geographic hot spots are hard to identify because different regions arent being systematically tested and properly compared across Canada.Health Canada recommends that every house in Canada test for radon. This involves purchasing an Alpha Tracker ($60, alphatracker.ca) and monitoring radon levels over a three-month period to account for seasonal fluctuationsin winter, the warmer air inside a home creates a pressure difference that draws in more radon from the ground, explains Cooper.Mitigation, which will set you back between $3,000 and $5,000, involves active depressurization, which changes the pressure under a homes foundation, or covering a dirt floor or crawlspace to capture the radon and vent it outside. Its a hefty price tag, but for some homeowners, the peace of mind about health effects is worth it. We know through intensive studies that if someone lives in a household with high radon they have a one in 20 risk of developing lung cancer, says Cooper. If they smoke, it goes up to one in three.

Particulate matter

Combustion from cooking on a gas stove, or even from lighting candles or incense, is a source of particulate matter inside homes. (Most wood-burning fireplaces and woodstoves do not contribute significantly to particulate matter in your indoor air, as long as theyre built with a proper flue, chimney and venting.) Indoor air is also influenced by whats outside, and can include pollution from traffic, industry or forest fire smoke.Particulate matter of a certain size (2.5 micrometres or smaller) can get lodged deep in your lungs, which then mount a defence to eject itcausing asthma symptoms. This can also trigger an inflammatory response throughout the body that impacts other organs, including the heart and brain, says Michael Brauer, a professor in the Faculty of Medicine, School of Population and Public Health, at the University of British Columbia.Particulate matter seems to impact everything from the birthweight of babies to increasing dementia in elderly people, says Brauer, who studies air quality and health. You really want to limit your exposure. He suggests lighting candles and incense indoors in moderation, if at all. When cooking, always use the hood fan (one that vents outside is best) and crack a window, weather dependent. To make sure any outdoor air thats coming inside is as clean as possible, change out furnace and air conditioner filters regularly, and consider upgrading to HEPA filters inside your furnace if possible.

Mould

Mould occurs naturally outdoors, and its not uncommon to find it in moist rooms such as bathrooms and basements, says Brauer. In fact, 40 percent of homes probably have some level of mould, as it can thrive indoors if theres enough moisture.Mould is linked to respiratory symptoms such as coughing and wheezing, and it can exacerbate asthma, says Brauer. These symptoms may or may not be reversible, depending on the length of exposure. What people can do is eliminate obvious mould patches, turn on the bathroom fan when showering or bathing and use a dehumidifier to keep humidity below 45 percent in problem rooms. Fix any leaking pipes or appliances, tooit doesnt take much for mould to take hold. Watch for water stains on the ceiling, or any drywall bubbling or bloating. Buckling hardwood floors near your fridge are also a giveaway for leaks!

Consumer products

A lot of things that we buy or do can emit VOCs, says Kahan. Generally, if you smell something, its some kind of organic compound in the air.We regularly spray volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air in our homes without giving it any thought, whether thats spritzing the dogs smelly bed with Lysol or overusing household cleaners as a pandemic holdover. New furniture or carpet can off-gas for weeks. But these gasses can have short-term neurological and neuro-behavioural effectslike a experiencing a headache or losing your concentration after breathing in paint fumes, says Brauer. The best solution is to be intentional about product use, and to crack a window when cleaning or cooking, or after that new boxed mattress arrives. Owners of new housesor newly renovated homesshould be aware that everything from cabinets to new flooring can off-gas for weeks.

Lack of airflow

Airflow transformed from new buzzword to common knowledge during the pandemic, when health officials warned that being in spaces with poor ventilation, such as bars or crowded classrooms, increased the risk of contracting COVID-19. But stagnant air in homes is a concern, too, and for reasons outside of COVID, says Justin Liberman, director of operations for Air Quality Canada, an environmental consulting firm.We look at CO2, which is effectively a tracer gas for airflow, says Liberman. So, more CO2 indicates a lack of airflow. The health impacts of high CO2 (or carbon dioxide) levelsfeeling tired or sluggishare usually minor and reversible. But good air circulation is important, since it keeps a fresh supply of oxygen moving through the house. If your furnace doesnt already have an HRV (heat recovery ventilation system), you might consider getting one. Its an add-on that brings in more fresh air from outside, says Libermanbut it can set you back $2,000 to $4,000.

Easy indoor air-quality hacks

  • Change furnace and air conditioner filters every three months when appliances are in use, and hire professionals to clean the furnace ducts every few years.
  • Make sure your homes carbon monoxide (CO) monitors and smoke detectors are working properly.
  • Use bathroom fans when showering and the hood fan when cooking.
  • Consider a portable air filter for rooms you spend a lot of time in, such as a bedroom.

The low-down on air quality monitors

Unless you suspect your home has multiple air quality problems, experts dont recommend buying an all-in-one monitor for the home. It can be difficult to interpret the data, for one, as air is constantly in flux. Whats more, people tend to become a slave to the monitor, and it can increase anxiety. The one caveat is radon: Experts agree that everyone should purchase a radon monitor to track radon levels over three months.Next: A Guide to the Best House Plants, According to Science

How Do I Budget for Wellness When I’m Trying to Cut Back on Everything? https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/how-to-save-money-in-canada/ Mon, 09 Jan 2023 15:00:59 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67183023 Here's how to save money in Canada while keeping up with your feel-good goals.

Taking care of our health and well-being is important. But the cost of a gym membership or meditation app subscription probably feels expendable when a regular trip to the grocery store is getting more and more expensive. Rising prices, the skyrocketing cost of living and a crisis in affordability for just about everything mean were all making difficult choices about how to spend our money. When youre stressed and anxious about the prospect of a recession, prioritizing wellness is actually prudent, as long as youre able to recognize what a necessary wellness investment means for you. Remember greenwashing? Well, everything now is wellness-washed, says Janet Gray, a certified financial planner and long-time coach at Money Coaches Canada. You do this for your wellness, you do that for your wellness. But wait, what really is your wellness? She has a pointit can be hard to disentangle whats vital to your health and happiness from clever product marketing, or a need to keep up with your Peloton-owning peers or favourite social media stars. Do that, though, and Gray believes it is possible to balance financial, physical and emotional wellness all at once.

First, understand what financial wellness means

Theres no getting around the fact that financial wellness is having more cash coming in than what youre spending. Its incredibly hard, but its liberating. Because then you have options available to you, says Gray. That might include additional savings, or not creating additional debt. And thats life affirming, really. It leads you to achieving your goals, to freedom from toxic interest rates, and it creates less panic, less stress, which ultimately links to your mental and physical well-being, too.

Then, prioritize, prioritize, prioritize

Thats the key to any type of financial plan. To start, look at what resources you currently have, what expenses are fixed and what your goals are. Map it out, says Gray. Literally: pull out a piece of paper or fire up a simple spreadsheet and list your current incomes and all the things you have to pay out: rent, mortgage, strata fees, car insurance, groceries, bills, loan payments, everything. And then, include a line item called wellness. Allow yourself the flexibility to spend it however best suits your needs at that time, but make it a fixed expense. For me, its my yoga class, says Gray. Thats non-negotiable. For you, it could be going out to have coffee twice a week with a friend, or a monthly check-in with a therapist, or getting the newspaper delivered in the morning. You might feel like these are luxuries that should be trimmed from your budget in recessionary times, but sometimes a little goes a long way. If youve got one little spark of light in your week or your month, then its worth it, she says.

Look (again) at your resources

What benefits are available through your employer, and do they offer a health spending account or some money tied to a wellness program? Chiropractors, podiatrists and physiotherapist visits might be reimbursable, depending on your benefits plan. So many people dont take advantage of that, says Gray. Yes, itll still cost money. But wow, if for every $60 massage I might get $45 backwho doesnt want a $15 massage? You could also use it to supplement your gym membership or help purchase a bike, or to pay for a fitness app, she adds. A lot of group plans also have an employee assistance program (EAP) that provides free, short-term mental health counselling, and an opportunity to test out whether therapy is right for you.

Dial in to the freebies, or near-freebie

Group exercise classes in community settings are often gratis or deeply discounted. In the warmer months, many communities host yoga in the park. In larger office buildings or business parks, landlords sometimes offer cheap lunchtime workout classes in common areas. If youre working from home, employers may offer free online meditation classes or guided stretch breaks on Zoom. Look for second-hand fitness equipment selling for a deep discount on sites like Kijiji. And Gray also recommends looking into your community resource centre. Many offer counselling services, resources and support for mental health, employment, healthy eating and more.

Find that happy money

We all need to feel at certain points that our money is bringing us happiness. And sometimes physical and mental health investments are a slow build. Thats what makes retail therapy so powerful, says Gray. You get the dopamine hit when you make an impulse purchase, and its pretty unrealistic to think we can, or should, eliminate that spending entirely. So instead, plan for it. Consider a line item called happy money, and its there to be spent or not. Dont deny yourself the resources, says Gray. Acknowledge it and limit it so it becomes spending on a meaningful level rather than just impulsive.Next: How Important Is It to Buy *Only* Organic Foods?

Thirty years ago, a couple enterprising scientists from NASA decided to investigate whether a class of pollutants called volatile organic chemicalsfound in common products like paint, nail polish and shampoocould be removed from the air by indoor house plants. Results looked good: In just 24 hours, English ivy, for example, seemed to absorb two-thirds of the formaldehyde it encountered. NASA was chuffed. If man is to move into closed environments, on Earth or in space, the report declared, he must take along natures life support system. The study propagated a thousand articles about the air-purifying potential of indoor plants. There was just one problem: These experiments worked in super-closed environments, like an airtight lab or, you know, a rocket ship. But man currently lives in something a little larger, and to replicate these effects in your own home, researchers estimate youd need to deposit roughly 10 plants into each square foot.Still! Dont go dumping your ferns just yet. While plants might not meaningfully transform the air quality of your semi-detached, they do offer a host of health benefits that could help both professionally (concentration, creativity) and personally (composure, stress relief). Better still, you dont have to blast off in a spacecraft to reap these rewards.Of course, some academic papers tend to be a tad vague about which exact house plant they used in, say, their big productivity experiment, and that doesnt help much on a trip to the garden store. Thats why we scoured the journals to find specific, science-backed recommendationsso you can tailor your set-up to whatever perk you need. Read on to see which studies plant the right seed.(Related: 4 Times in Your Life You Should Definitely Be Using an Air Purifier)

Large, leafy plants

In one study of UK office workers, researchers scattered around an array of green, large-leafed plants with an average height of 3 feetat least two of which were in the direct sightline of each desk. After just three weeks, the academics from four universities in Australia, the UK and the Netherlands determined that workers were 15 percent more productive in a green space. Those same academics repeated their experiment in both a Dutch call centre and a large British consultancy firm, finding that plant life increased self-reported levels of workplace satisfaction and concentrationwhich might be handy if the pandemic has wreaked havoc on your attention span.

Corn plant

A small Japanese study found that participants in a work-association task came up with more creative answers sitting next to a five-foot-high massangeana dracaena (or corn plant) than they did in an empty room. Plant-adjacent participants also showed more creativity than those whoand it gives us no pleasure to report thiscompleted their task next to a stack of magazines instead.

ZZ Plant

Nobody likes a hospital waiting roombut for Dutch patients with an appointment in the radiology department, the mere presence of a Zamioculcas (or ZZ plant) led them to report lower levels of stress.

Ivy

Boost your energy or provide tranquility? Get you a plant that can do both. An Egyptian study found that hedera helix (or English ivy) affected different emotions based on the colour of its leaves. Bright green and greenish-yellow varieties were associated with feelings of calm and comfort, while reddish or darker green leaves lent a bit more oomph.

Ficus

The Royal Horticultural Society and the University of Reading held a beauty contest, and one plant ran away with it: The Ficus benjamina (or weeping fig) had the greatest impact on respondents feelings of well-being. Still, researchers noted that any lush green plant with a rounded canopy should provide an emotional lift.

Pilea, Palms and Philodendron

Do you want to feel a little more resilient? Or at least a little more willing to submerge your hand in ice water for five minutes? Researchers from Washington State University found that the presence of Pilea nummulariifolia (creeping Charlie), bamboo palms or a heart-leafed philodendron may significantly increase subjects pain tolerance, compared to an empty room and a room filled with brightly coloured objects.

Pothos

South Korean researchers busted out the brain monitors and determined that our oxyhemoglobin concentration dips in the prefrontal cortex when we look at plants, which just means we become far more physiologically relaxed. They used a pothos for their studyalways a good choice, since the Royal Horticultural Society paper suggests that unhealthy plants have a negative effect on our sense of well-being, and these suckers are notoriously hard to kill.Next: How to Start a Vegetable Garden, No Matter the Size of Your Home

Lee Waltham, managing partner at Brandish, a Winnipeg strategy consultancy, shares what to tell your boss.

It means fewer meetingsfor everyone, including the boss.

We got smart with our meetings. Weeklies became monthlies. Hour-long sitdowns became 15-minute stand-ups. Can it be a Slack? Theres been a 0 to 40 percent reduction in the time spent in meetings, and that goes for me, too.

The shop doesnt have to close on Fridays.

Not all businesses do the type of work that is conducive to everyone only working the same four days per week. The big idea is flexibility, and what works best for the business.

Itll get people talking.

A lot of people reached out over LinkedIn. Im having two or three conversations per week about the fourday week. There is so much curiosity from our peers.

Andyesyour people will be happier and more productive.

We surveyed the staff for happiness and job satisfaction and the scores are higher than theyve ever been. As for productivity, weve actually increased our volume of work substantially with no decrease in our ability to complete projects on time.Next: WTF Is WFH Doing to My Back?

The best ergonomic chairs in Canada

A comfortable ergonomic chair will keep you in the correct alignment so your body can work more effectively, says Dr. Liza Egbogah, a Toronto-based osteopath, chiropractor, myofascial release therapist. When youre sitting in a chair thats not ergonomic, your muscles have to work harder, which leads to back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and hip pain. To her, this home-office item is non-negotiable, so were highlighting three top ergonomic chairs available in Canada.(Related:WTF Is WFH Doing to My Back?)

Design Within Reach Sayl

Ikea Office Chair 2

Budget ergonomic chair pick: IKEA

Ideally, your chair should have armrests so you dont have to hold your shoulders and elbows up while working on the keyboard and using the mouse, says Egbogah. For a budget-friendly option, try this one from IKEA, which also includes a headrest.Markus Office Chair, $249, ikea.com(Related:A Guide to Back Pain Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention)

More ergonomic tips from Egbogah

Ensure your days are ache-free by considering your alignment. Your ear should line up with your shoulder,” says Egbogah. “If youre sticking your head out, its probably because youre too far away from your monitor or your eyes are getting tired.” She suggests repositioning your monitor to correct this misalignment. “Dont look like a croissant! Also, Egbogah cautions against standing desks. Why? Most people will end up putting more weight on one foot or they’ll tilt their pelvis, and thatll lead to other problems,” she says. “Consider a desk you can adjust in height to make it a sitting and standing workstation you can switch between.Next: 4 Chest Stretches to Help Improve Posture and Reverse Slouching

Toxic Holiday Plants

Holiday plants like poinsettia, holly and mistletoe are pretty at Christmas, but dangerous if a dog consumes them, says Dr. Jamie Richardson, a licensed veterinarian and medical chief of staff at Small Door Veterinary. “The chemicals found in the leaves and berries can cause vomiting, diarrhea and breathing difficulties even if just a small amount is consumed,” she says. The spiny leaves on holly can cause gastrointestinal irritation, like abdominal pain and excessive drooling. Richardson says to call your vet immediately if your dog has consumed any toxic plant.

Wrapping Supplies

Gift wrap, ribbons, bows and confetti look like fun for a dog to play with, but are dangerous if ingested. They can easily bunch in the stomach or wrap around the intestines, causing serious and potentially fatal harm to your pet. “Don’t let your pet play with these items and put away any gift-wrapping materials right after you finish wrapping,” says Richardson. “Seek immediate veterinary attention if you think your pet may have swallowed something.”

Chocolate

Sweet Treats

Indulgent holiday treats can be life-threatening to dogs if consumed. Chocolate contains methylxanthines such as caffeine and theobromine, which dogs are particularly sensitive to, says Dr. Rachel Barrack, a licensed veterinarian and certified veterinary acupuncturist. “Signs of chocolate toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rates, increased temperature, muscle rigidity and even seizures, cardiac failure and coma,” she says. Candy and baked goods with artificial sweetener xylitol can also be toxic to dogs.”Certain candies and cookies might contain nuts, many of which are also harmful for dogs,” says Richardson. “Watch for baked goods that contain grapes or raisins as even just a couple can lead to kidney failure in dogs.” Make sure to keep all sweet treats up high where dogs can’t get them. Contact your vet immediately if you think your dog has consumed any of these items.

Christmas Tree

Christmas trees are beautiful to look at but pose risks to your dog. Whether it’s real or fake, make sure your tree is properly secured so it doesn’t fall and hurt your pet. Don’t let your pet drink from the tree stand water basin and don’t add anything to the water, in case you’re out of the room when you dog decides to take a sip. Also, stagnant water can cause bacteria to grow and cause serious stomach upsets for dogs if consumed. “Sweep or vacuum up the needles regularly, as they can be harmful if eaten,” Richardson advises. “They can also get stuck between your pet’s paw pads and cause irritation or pain.”

Meat, Bones and Gravy Left in the Trash

Trash filled with meat and bones is a dog’s dream. And while they may enjoy chewing a big bone, cooked meat bones can splinter and cause blockage or lacerations in the gastrointestinal tract, necessitating a surgical emergency. “Even just small amounts of fatty meat can cause pancreatitis, a potentially fatal disease,” says Richardson.Gravy is also toxic to dogs. It typically contains lots of salt, and may contain onion and garlic that are poisonous to dogs. Keep the trash away from your dog and alert your vet if you suspect your dog consumed any of these items.

Ornaments

Ornaments

Glass ornaments can break and cut your dog’s paws or face. If ingested, they can also cause internal lacerations. Make sure ornaments are hung where your pet cannot reach them. Barrack says that snow globes and lights contain poisonous chemicals such as ethylene glycolthe same found in anti-freeze. If a dog ingests it, they appear drunk and experience acute kidney failure. They must be brought to the veterinarian immediately to be treated with an antidote.

Electrical Cords and String Lights

During the holidays, electrical cords and string lights are everywhere. That puts dogs at risk for electrical shocks, seizures and burns, if chewed. And dogs risk strangulation if they get themselves wrapped up in those cords or light strings. Take care to make your holiday lights as pet-proof as possible. “Always supervise your pet when they’re in a decorated room,” says Richardson. “Tape down and secure wires and always turn off lights and unplug cords when leaving the house.” Contact your vet immediately if your dog gnaws on any wires.(Related: 3 Ways Mindfulness Can Help You Get Through the Holiday Season)

fireworks

Fireworks

It’s well-known that fireworks scare dogs, but there’s no avoiding the loud cracks and booms on New Year’s. Fireworks are painful for a dog’s ears and can cause anxiety. Make sure your dog is secured in a safe space before the New Year countdown begins, even if you’re celebrating at home with your immediate household. “If your dog is particularly prone to anxiety, talk to your vet about calming aids, such as pheromone collars, anxiety-relieving shirts such as the Thundershirt, or anti-anxiety medication,” says Richardson.

Menorah

Hanukkah Menorah

Hanukkah is the festival of lights, but make sure your pet cannot come into contact with a lit menorah with real candles. Keep candles up high where a dog can’t reach or knock them down. Dog burns should be treated immediately with immersion in cold water. Obtain veterinary care quickly. (This warning goes for all lit candles, of course.)

Holiday Visitors

Chances are your dog probably isn’t used to people coming in and out of your home. If you do have guests visiting this holiday season, they may leave the front door open, and your dog can inadvertently sneak out and get lost. “Make sure your dog has a safe quiet place to relax,” says Barrack. If your dog gets stressed out in a busy or loud house, consult with your veterinarian about possible medications to help your pet relax while you host the holidays.Next: 11 Cleaning Tips Every Dog or Cat Owner Should Know

A traumatized workforcethat’s what HR expert and advocate Allison Venditti says were dealing with in the back half of 2022. There was no time to process anything in the middle of a disaster, she says. But now, people are re-evaluating what they want. And what Canadian employees want most, according to a study by wellness firm LifeWorks, is flexibility. Its the key to work-life balance, says Bryan Smale, professor emeritus of recreation and leisure studies at the University of Waterloo: The more flexibility you have to allocate your time in a way that best suits your lifestyle, the happier you are. (He should knowhes also the director of the Canadian Index of Wellbeing.) But flexibility in the workplace can contort itself into many forms: where you work, when you work, how youre compensated. There are a lot of ways to work within a budget to give people the things they want, Venditti says. But the days of good job, heres a pen are over. Here’s how to create a better work-life balance.Work Life Banalnce 4 Day Workweek

Take your time back with the four-day work week

It was the summer of 2021well past the one-year anniversary of the global pandemic that transformed the future of workand the employees of a Winnipeg branding and strategy agency were burnt out. People were just done, says Lee Waltham, managing partner at Brandish. He and his leadership team knew their staff needed a break, but the idea of closing up shop for a week felt too drastic. So they shut down for seven.Well, overall. After a two-month experiment ditching Fridays, Brandish made the permanent switch to a four-day work week last fall, joining Canadian employers like environmental non-profit EcoSuperior, software firm Coconut and Torontos Juno College (who could not be reached for comment as they had closed for a week to give our employees a break). Thats 52 days youre getting back, says Waltham. Fifty-two days, or seven and a half weeksbut whos counting?Joe OConnor, for one. The Irish labour advocate is the CEO of 4 Day Week Global, a non-profit that is in the middle of the largest-ever trial of reduced work hours, involving 3,500 employees across 70 U.K. companies. (Other trials are in the works for the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Canadas kicks off October 3.) He saw an uptick in interest in the four-day week about the time Waltham noticed his employees burning out. The first 12 months of the pandemic were all about the shift to remote work and putting out fires, says OConnor. Then people could start thinking about whats next. The four-day week isnt the only way companies are trying to lessen the load on workers; some offer increased personal and sick days. But OConnor emphasizes that universal leave can be extremely discretionary. An individuals gender, their seniority, how much agency they feel they have, their managers belief in the policy, he says, all of that affects whether someone actually takes leave. A four-day work week, on the other hand, is a structural shift that requires change at the departmental leveltackling meeting bloat, eliminating interruptions, making use of productivity toolsto enable a team to work smarter. And if done rightthe 4 Day Week Global team spends months preparing companies for the shiftit doesnt lead to work intensification, either. Before starting their trial, 50 percent of employees at one company felt they had enough time to complete their work. After the trial, that number rose to 80 percent. Waltham concurs: There was really no disruption, in terms of productivity or performance. People were happier and less stressed. And it can help keep future burnout at bay. This is something we can do long term, Waltham says. Its sustainable. Its also contagious: One of Brandishs clients implemented a four-day week, and now some 800 more Winnipeggers enjoy a steady supply of long weekends. One of the main objections to the four-day week is that it wont suit certain industries, so OConnor made sure to recruit care services, manufacturers and fast-food establishments to the pilots. We can point to case studies where a shorter work week has worked in pretty much every industry that exists, he says. When workers packed up and went home in March of 2020, they unknowingly launched a years-long experiment between employers and employees that has resulted in a desire for more autonomy and flexibility at work. Managers have been forced to trust workers a lot more, says OConnor. As a result, the four-day week is a much less radical concept to get your head around. Its the next logical step.(Related: 5 Canadians with Disabilities on the Upsides of Working from Home)Work Life Balance Sick Day

Amp up your benefits

The increased demand for flexibility doesn’t just apply to time. A lot of companies are moving towards more flexible benefits, says Tiana Field-Ridley, senior program manager for workplace mental health at the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Flex packages let you allocate contributions to the services you need and use, so you dont max out your therapy allowance or massage treatments while leaving $750 of acupuncture untouched. Some providers offer a perk for employers, too: They only pay for what employees use (minus an administration fee). These savings might help make benefits more widely available in industries that havent typically offered them. Toronto restaurants Marben and Barque Smokehouse recently started providing flex packages for all their staff; both use Olympia Benefits for physical health services. As part of the change in compensation model, David Neinstein, owner of Barque Smokehouse, eliminated tipping and instead paid staff a higher hourly wage. We talked about the new model, and I said I understand if you want to go elsewhere, Neinstein says. No one did. The benefits made the difference. Then there are companies whose benefits take a broad, inclusive view of what people might need. SAP, a German software company with offices in Canada, includes support for employees with diabetes and cancer, on top of coverage for fertility treatments, gender affirmation therapies and procedures, adoption costs and telehealth. For Field-Ridley, a robust benefits package is about more than just good dental (though thats key, too). It can help create a workplace thats protective. And one that recognizes its not just the work thats important anymore, says FieldRidley. People are important.

Go on that vacation

Compressed days and reduced hours address the need for flexibility on an ongoing basis, but sometimes you just need a weekor threeoff. Unlimited paid time off gets a bad rap, since workers offered this policy take fewer days off than employees with a fixed allocation. Sometimes, its because of guilt, says Field-Ridley. Or because their workload is too much. Plus, with no balance to use or lose, vacations just arent prioritized. There need to be parameters around these policies, she says, like minimum weeks employees must take or mandatory time off where the whole organization shuts down.Marketing agency Peachy has a minimumtheres no maximumpaid vacation policy of 15 days; marketing software company Hubspot has a global week of rest on top of unlimited days and a vacation quota relief policy to ensure salespeople take a break, too. Organization app Evernote encourages employees to take advantage of its unlimited days policy with a $1,000 vacation stipend, provided the break is at least five days long. Streaming service Rokus unlimited time off policy states that you can take what you think is appropriate, as long as you get your job done and dont impact the teams work, which reflects the trust and autonomy workers are looking for. People want to get their projects done, says Field-Ridley. They just dont want to feel like theyre owned by a company anymore.”(Related: Vacation Doesnt Solve Burnout)Work Life Balance Worth

Know your worth

We tapped Allison Venditti, HR expert and founder of advocacy group Moms at Work, to answer our questions on the value of pay transparency. Why do we need pay transparency? Were programmed to not talk about money, and that only benefits companies. Women are systemically underpaid, which continues through your whole career, because every time you apply for a new job, your salary is based on your last job. Its a cycle. Pay transparency ensures that women, people of colour, people with disabilities whoeverare able to decide if they would like to work for an organization in a way that they never were beforeHas there been a shift in interest since the pandemic? The number of LinkedIn posts that list salary rose by 44 percent compared to a year ago. Its an employee market, and if Im going to jump through the ridiculous hoops of the recruitment processwrite a cover letter, do a project, meet the whole teamall of it usually unpaid, tell me what youre going to pay me.How does it impact employee satisfaction? Pay transparency builds trust and helps with retention. Companies are screaming We need to retain women! To close the leak in your talent pipeline, you need to pay women. And if a woman finds out shes making 30 percent less than a male counterpartwell, bad HR is bad PR, and people will talk about it.And know the worth of your profession: Female-dominated jobscustomer support or HR, for instance tend to have the lowest salaries, and this not so-fun fact doesnt get addressed simply by making sure everyone in the same role is (under)paid equally. Unito, a Montreal software start-up that also has a policy of pay transparency, ran the numbers and increased the base salary for these roles by 4 percent to try to further close the industry wage gap.Work Life Banalnce Colleagues

Support your colleagues

For many, the past few years of remote work have been a long-overdue break from the racist aggressions (micro and otherwise) of the office. Thats probably why a recent study by Slackled consortium Future Forum found that the desire for a hybrid or fully remote work arrangement was stronger in Asian, Black and Hispanic/Latinx employees than in white employees. When you remove yourself from an environment thats hurting you a little bit every day, says Dr. Helen Ofosu, a career coach and HR consultant, you realize how much better you feel. The Ottawa expert cautions that as employees return to the office, its more important than ever to level the uneven playing field created by systemic inequities in the workplace.A lot can be accomplished through clear communication. A 2022 study by Hue, a U.S. non-profit that works to amplify BIPOC voices and visibility in the workplace, found that while 80 percent of responding companies had implemented diversity initiatives, only a quarter of BIPOC employees knew about them. According to Dr. Ofosu, the same lack of transparency exists around training budgets. So some people get most of the money and others go without, she says, creating a differential in who gets access to training and professional development. Targeted, formal mentorship programs can help over time. When you have someone whos looking out for you, willing to vouch for you, share lessons learned along the wayall those things add up, says Dr. Ofosu. The Hue study found that BIPOC employees are three times as likely as their white colleagues to consider leaving their job due to the emotional burden related to their race at work. One way to reduce that load would be to recognize the labour performed by certain staffthose who participate in employee resource groups, for instancefor what it is: work. At some companies, those employees get a reduction in their other duties, says Dr. Ofosu. If an organization is serious about improving inclusion, those extra activities should be built into someones rolenot added on top of it.Next: How to Make Time for Yourself, According to Science

What Is Impact Investing, and Is It Right for Me? https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/impact-investing/ Mon, 18 Jul 2022 11:00:58 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67181311 Not sure what to do with your money? Let your moral compass guide you.

The post What Is Impact Investing, and Is It Right for Me? appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
With increased awareness on issues like climate change and social injustice, many investors are now concerned about where their money goes. One option being explored is something called impact investing, which means aligning your moral compass with your investments.More and more people realize the futility of investing in businesses that create or exacerbate social and environmental problems [globally], says Bonnie Foley-Wong, author of Integrated Investing and founder of Pique Ventures, an investment firm that specializes in impact investing. They are motivated by purpose in other aspects of their liveslike their work and purchasing decisionsand have realized that they can make purpose-driven investments, too.Impact investors choose organizations that have a good impact on the world. And in recent years, millennials and women have been at the forefront of the shift to ethical investing.Heres how to determine if its a strategy thats right for you.

ESG versus SRI: Whats the difference?

Socially responsible investing (SRI) and environmental social governance (ESG) investing are two different approaches to impact investing. The three basic measurable principles of ESG investing are the impact on the environment, social impact and governance (a companys overall leadership). Look for companies that are at the very least doing no harm and at the very best improving the planet through their products and services, says Marissa Bronfman, the former chief brand officer at Kizmet Impact Capital, an impact investment fund.SRI investing goes further by actively excluding or selecting investments based on certain ethical principles. Its a strategy thats unique to each investor. For example, gender-lens investing integrates gender analysis into decision-making. Before becoming associated with a company, investors assess that companys commitment to having more women in executive roles, and how well they score on pay equity and other workplace practices that benefit women, like generous paid leave.

How can I measure the impact?

Beyond the risk of not earning the desired return or losing money, which is part of any investment, impact investors consider risk over a longer period of time, and the impact of a decision on future generations. Impact investors also think about who is taking on disproportionate riskfor example, whether the risk has been passed to employees, suppliers, customers or communities. This might exclude a company that engages in questionable business practices or profits from a trade in weapons.

How do I identify legit impact investing from marketing hype?

Its hard to invest ethically when youre unsure where to find trustworthy information. There is the risk of investing in a company that is greenwashing, for instance. A company can use environmental language or environmental colours to position their product or service as something good for people and the planet, explains Bronfman. To familiarize yourselves with impact investing, start following accounts on social media such as @mymeaningfulmoney, @janinerogan, @bonnieowong or @financeforchange. You could investigate companies whose products you already use to see if they offer investment opportunities. Bronfman encourages everyone to do their due diligence on industries and companies. There are also publicly available impact-oriented resources, like the sustainable development goals from the United Nations. Third-party rating agencies also offer ESG ratings, but they can vary dramatically, so use them with other metrics.Developing an impact investment strategy sounds complicated, but Foley-Wong believes that a lot of it comes down to your priorities. To start, you can dedicate a small portion of your disposable income to investing and then make sure it aligns with your values, says Bronfman.Remember that impact investing is about doing the right thing in the long term, not for a quick buck. But the returns will be even sweeter when you know theyre aligned with constructive, positive change.Next: I Had $1.11 in Savings. Heres How I Improved My Relationship With Money

I Tried the Upright Posture Trainer—Here’s What Happened https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/posture-corrector-canada/ Mon, 30 May 2022 15:53:57 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67181073 Can the Upright device help me adopt a statuesque stance, or does it have limitations? An expert shares her thoughts.

The post I Tried the Upright Posture Trainer—Here’s What Happened appeared first on Best Health.

I was eight years old, sitting at the dinner table with my family, when my grandmother slipped her arm around me and pressed her knuckle straight into the small of my back. I jolted uprightexactly as she intended. It would be the first of many swift jabs whenever shed catch me slouching. And it worked: I developed a habit, which lasted for years, of correcting my posture throughout the day, no knuckle necessary. But then the pandemic came, and as life as we knew it fizzled away, so did my good posture. I was worried Id developed a bit of a hunched stance and needed a new reminder to straighten up. And thats when I scrolled upon Uprights posture training device. The 3.8-centimetre gadget, which can be worn as a necklace or stuck on your back with disposable adhesives, has a sensor that can detect a slouch. It links to your phone to track your posture via the brands app; a little graphic mimics your bodys position, so when you hunch youll see a slanted figure. Hunch too far, and the device on your back vibrates as a gentle reprimandnot unlike an electric fence that gives disobedient dogs a little shock.posture corrector canada: upright posture trainerSitting at my desk, I stuck the device onto my back, set the timer on the app for 60 minutes and assumed a regal stance. My goal was never to let the device vibrate. So when I had a hard time reading a document on my computer, I didnt lean forward; I moved my screen closer. When I had to grab something off the ground, I didnt stoop down; I lowered myself via pli. On the few occasions when I forgot about the device and was vibrated back into compliance, I felt like a scolded dog and retreated into a frozen position. Each day, I increased my goal on the Upright device, hoping Id soon default to good posture. While the device was certainly an effective reminder, I wondered if it was enough. What about the other elements it wasnt able to track, like my squared shoulders and my alignment? When aiming for perfect posture, the back is actually the least important body part to focus on, says Dr. Liza Egbogah, a Toronto-based osteopath and chiropractor. Instead, she says I should focus on my front, since tightness there causes the body to pull forward into a croissant shape. With her clients, Egbogah uses massage techniques to loosen their chest, fascia around the neck, pec muscles and hip flexors, making it easier for them to pull their shoulders back, sit up straighter and maintain that pose, as well as to reduce body aches. When your body is out of alignment, theres going to be an impact on your joints, she says. This can lead to faster degeneration of joints, causing pain and even early-onset arthritis.A tool like the Upright device can be beneficial, Egbogah says, as long as its treated as a posture reminder, not a corrector. That means before using it, Egbogah recommends understanding what good posture means: ears in line with shoulders, shoulders in line with hip bones and hip bones in line with the outer parts of the ankles. Then, ease tightness in the body by using a lacrosse ball or foam roller.Performing short, simple stretches throughout the day is also key for addressing tightness. Egbogah says that when she sits at her desk, she simply pulls back her shoulders every hour or so. When standing in line at a store, she crosses her arms behind her back to open her chest.Once your bodys loosened up, Egbogah suggests going slow with the Upright device; like building up muscle, improving posture takes time. She recommends using it for just one or two hours a day, preferably in the afternoon, when muscles have likely fatigued. On the days I use the posture corrector and stretch my body, I find its less work to keep my back straight. The more I use my foam roller, the easier it is to keep my body in alignment. And the more attention I pay to my posture, the better I feel. I knew good posture was an easy confidence booster, but I was surprised to learn its a mood booster, too: Studies have shown it can decrease stress, anxiety and depression.Recently, my boyfriend commented on my excellent posture and told me I looked taller. Maybe I should get this thing, he said, gesturing to the Upright. No need, I told him, pressing my knuckle into his back. I got you covered.Next: 5 Strength-Training Moves for Your Best-Ever Posture

“All I Think About With That Dish Is My Mum.” https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/suzanne-barr-book-my-ackee-tree/ Tue, 17 May 2022 11:00:41 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67180864 In this excerpt from "My Ackee Tree," author and chef Suzanne Barr shares her memories of cooking with her family and the Caribbean staples they bonded over.

The post “All I Think About With That Dish Is My Mum.” appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
My parents didnt make a conscious effort to teach me how to cook. They were just cooking all the time, and I was there watching. Staring at my mothers hands around that bowl.

The sky was always blue in Florida. Royal, sapphire, Egyptian, olympic, electric. Tanya and I wanted seasons, to watch leaves fall in autumn and wear snow boots in winter. We sometimes shuffled through family photos of a life before, memories of winters in Toronto with our cousins before we moved to Florida. But the view out my window in Plantation was pretty constant. Blue from the sky and green from a tree that never changed.

The tree, though, was something special: ackee. Jamaicas national fruit. The poor thing rarely fruited, but it was still like a Jamaican flag in front of our house.

Of all the jobs Mummy asked me to do in the kitchen, cleaning ackee was my favourite.

Returning home from a Caribbean market, Daddy places a whole sack of ackee on the table. Bright-red fruit peeks from the bag. Each pod is the size of Mummys palm, and they look like beautiful undersea flowers, opening.

Tanya and I stand beside her at the counter. Dont mash up de ackee.

We roll our eyes. We know, we know. You tell us every time.

She sucks air through her teeth from behind pursed lips, then lets out a short, sharp kiss. Its a technique my mum mastered before my time. Jamaicans are experts at kissing teeth.

A short kiss means minor irritation. A longer, deeper kiss means that Mummy is vexed. Kissing teeth can indicate annoyance, anger, and even joy…

Its only a short kiss this time, and Mummy is showing us that she disapproves of our eye-rolling and our sass.

Put the seeds here in this bowl.

Her accent was subtle, but Jamaican Patois would shine when she was vexed, or when she was reminiscing with one of her friends.

Cha (no, man) was one of her staples.

Cha, cant bada with de childe, pickney de too facety.

Mummy had an arsenal of dialects and accents for everyday use.

I didnt love the actual work of cleaning ackeegently separating the fleshy parts of the fruit from the shiny black seedsbut I loved knowing that wed have ackee and saltfish the next morning. Ackee has a mild flavour, kind of nutty, and a buttery texture that pairs perfectly with salted fish.

This one isnt open, Mummy.

She grabs it out of my hand.

Its poisonous. The fumes will kill you, she says.

It always shocked me, that fact. If its eaten too soon, before it opens on its own, it can be toxic.

She sifts through the bag, pulling out any closed pods, and places them on the marble windowsill above the sink. Its where she puts tea bags shes only used once, the kitchen sponge, her beloved spider plant.

Ackee flesh gets under my nails. Its kind of slimy but not gooey. Firm yet soft to touch.

It looks like a brain! Tanya and I giggle.

Cheeky innit! Stop playing with the food and finish up, Mummy says firmly.

A seven-pound bag of ackee turns into one pound of flesh. Shells go in the garbage, black seeds are sprinkled in the backyard in hopes of another tree.

Cooking salt cod is a process. Mummy soaks the fish overnight in water, and then drains it the next day. She adds fresh water and brings it to a boil. The water spills over, and she kisses her teeth; she drains the water, boils it again, drains again, boils it for a third time, and drains it once more. Each time she changes the water, more salt is pulled from the fish.

When the fish is ready, she parboils the ackee flesh. Then she flakes the fish into big, succulent chunks and adds crispy sliced bacon, tomatoes, thyme, and scallions. Cooked ackee looks like scrambled eggs with its firm fluffiness and light-yellow hue.

Theres power and deep memories in that combination of flavours for me, and thats why I rarely cook ackee and saltfish myself. It sits too heavy on my heart. All I think about with that dish is my mum.

Are High-Tech At-Home Composters Actually Beneficial? https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/tero-food-recycler-canada-review/ Thu, 21 Apr 2022 11:00:47 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67180701 Innovative devices promise to make composting mess- and odour-free, but are they worth the price?

The post Are High-Tech At-Home Composters Actually Beneficial? appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
I hide my compost bin in my freezer. I banish it to that frozen tundracrowded with pizzas, microwave dinners and freezer-burned chickento keep food scraps out of my garbage and avoid the nasty smells and fruit flies that can accompany organic waste. I thought this was next-level at-home composting, but then I tried Tero.Designed by Canadian entrepreneurs Elizabeth Coulombe and Valrie Lalibert, Tero is an award-winning countertop food recycler. The device is similar to a composter but instead of facilitating decomposition, it dehydrates and grinds vegetable peels and dinner leftovers into ready-to-use fertilizer overnight. In 2019, Canadians sent more than 4.8 million tonnes of organic waste for processing, slightly more than 37 times the weight of the CN Tower. In fact, Canadian households produce more food waste per capita (79 kilograms) than our American neighbours (59). And with everyone spending more time at home during the pandemic, levels have increased.Composting is an essential way to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills, which generate nearly a quarter of Canadas methane emissions, a greenhouse gas driving the climate crisis. I’m one of the 90 percent of Canadians who has access to curbside or drop-off organics management programs. Composting, however, does not appear to be a popular option among all Canadians. A Tero survey found that only 45 percent of respondents compost at all, citing concerns like bugs, odours and a general lack of knowledge about the process.(Related: How to Freeze Fresh Foods to Prevent Waste)Beyond making food waste useful again, at-home composters can offer home gardeners and plant parents a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers, which pollute lakes and rivers. For me, at-home composting is great because it feels like an active way to reduce my ecological footprint amid a climate catastrophe that often feels overwhelming. With British Columbia experiencing wildfires, atmospheric rivers, landslides and more, Julia Payson, executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association in Vernon, B.C., has seen a rise in the stress people experience around climate change, a phenomenon known as eco-anxiety. And while individual actions arent enough to curb eco-anxietyas Payson notes, climate change is not an individual problemengaging in at-home composting or going plastic-free are things that people have within the realm of their control, she says. They will often use them as first steps.Like many home-based hobbies, gardening and composting saw a boost in popularity during the pandemic. After their 2019 Kickstarter campaign raised more than $1.75 million and their prototype won, Coulombe and Lalibert capitalized off this rising interest and launched Tero in September 2021.You don’t have to live with all the bad things with the normal compost, Coulombe told me, explaining why it was important for them to develop a product that eliminates smells and is attractive and easy to use. After using Tero for a few months, I can confirm that this device makes composting as simple as pressing a button. In a matter of hours (typically three to eight), Tero efficiently, albeit somewhat noisily, turned banana peels, coffee grounds and discarded vegetables into about a cup of dry, odour-free, soil-like grounds full of organic nutrients. I then added the mixture to my many, many houseplants. And they seemed to like it.At-home composters that turn waste into garden-ready fertilizer, such as outdoor composters or work compost bins, vary in design and cost. But starting at $595, Teros price is steep. While it worked well and made me more conscious about the harmful impact of chemical fertilizers and what I put into my green bin, I plan to stick with my freezer bin and municipal program and purchasing organic fertilizer. This way, I can still keep my food waste out of the trash, and though it may not be homemade, my plants will continue to eat organic.Next: 10 Easy Ways to Cut Down on Food Waste in the Kitchen

Last spring, as the coronavirus pandemic shut everything down, Canadians across the country started looking for new ways to spend time outdoors while staying safe. In the early days of lockdown, now over a year ago, greenhouses and seed suppliers saw a huge boom in sales. In fact, according to one report from Halifaxs Dalhousie University, 51 percent of Canadians got their hands in the dirt last spring and summer to grow at least one type of fruit or vegetable. And of those home gardeners, nearly one in five (or about 17.4 percent) were first-timers.It makes sense that gardening is booming during these uncertain times. Aside from increasing access to healthy fruits and veggies, gardening is also great for our mental health. It helps to reduce stress, boost confidence and self-esteem, and even reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Plus, being outside and soaking up the rays boosts your bodys production of vitamin D, which is thought to raise serotonin levels and elevate your mood.We spoke to Jillian Bishop, founder of Peterborough, Ontario-based seed supplierUrban Tomato, about how you can start a vegetable garden at home, no matter the size of your space.(Related: 10 Changes You Can Make For a Healthier Home)

General tips for gardens of all sizes

Follow these tips and tricks to increase your chances for a successful growing season.First, make sure you have good soil. Soil is really critical, whether you are in a large or small or container space, says Bishop. It can really impact the amount of harvest you have and it can prevent pests and other challenges you might come across. The exact type of soil you should be on the lookout for depends on a lot of factors, like whether your garden is indoors or outdoors and if youre using planters or growing straight from the ground. But, generally, including some compost or some other sort of nutrient (like fertilizer) is always great to mix in.Another important tip Bishop has for first-time gardeners is to not be afraid to pick at your food. The more you pick them, the more they produce, says Bishop. If you see a bean and then you pick it, itll tell the plant to keep making more. This can help you have a big harvest even if your space is small. And finally, plant something youll actually want to eat. Focussing on things you like will help you narrow down what to grow and get you excited for your harvest. Picture yourself in August and think about what youd like to be harvesting and work backwards from there to decide what youd like to plant in the spring, says Bishop.(Related: Dont Have a Green Thumb? These Hacks Can Revive Almost Any Dead Houseplant)

I have a backyard

If you have an outdoor space like a back or front yard that youve never used as a garden, the first thing you need to do is get rid of the grass in the area where you want to plant. While last fall wouldve been the best time to do this, starting in spring is still possible. You could start by pulling out the grass, but digging it up by hand is a nightmare and will probably destroy peoples will to garden, says Bishop.Instead, Bishop suggests using a technique called lasagna gardening. Basically, put down a few layers of thick cardboard over the area where you want your garden to be. This will start to kill off the grass. Then, build up layers: add dried leaves, straw, soil, compost, triple mix and keep layering. This will create rich soil as all the different components break down. Dont forget to keep it moist so the organic materials start to decompose.Once youve got your garden bed ready to go, its time to add either veggie seeds or seedlings (either are great options for an outdoor garden). Some of the easiest veggies to grow from seeds include radishes (which take 30 days) and any sort of leafy green like lettuce. Bishop also suggests beans and herbs like basil, which are also really easy to grow and dont take too much time before you can eat them. Youre just waiting for the plant to have enough energy to produce the leaf that you eat, says Bishop. And with outdoor gardens, timing is everything. Plant too early, and you risk losing your crops to a frost or a late snowstorm. Plant too late, and things might not have enough time to grow. Generally, the old wives tale of waiting until Victoria Day, the May Two-Four long weekend, to plant is a good guideline. But a lot still rides on the specific weather conditions in your area.Bishop suggests checking the good ole Farmers Almanac or even weather networks for long-term forecasts and information on when the last frost has come and gone to help you decide when to plant.(Related: 10 Surprising Ways Gardening Is One of the Healthiest Things You Can Do)

I have a balcony or patio

The first thing you need are planters to house your garden. Aside from taking into consideration the types of veggies youll be growing and how much space they need, the main thing to look out for is drainage. If the container is sitting somewhere you dont want it to get wet, make sure you have something under to catch the water, says Bishop. But most importantly, the water needs to be able to flow through so the plants arent just sitting in a pool of water.Another important thing to be wary of is overcrowding. Some plants, like tomatoes or cucumbers, start off really small but then grow to be quite big by the time youre ready to harvest. Its tempting to put three tomatoes into one pot, but youd probably get more of a harvest if you only planted one, says Bishop. Otherwise [the plants] will compete with one another and they probably wont be as productive as you would like. To combat this, Bishop suggests interplanting, or planting different herbs and veggies together in the same planter to make the most out the space while avoiding overcrowding. This might mean planting one tomato plant among smaller plants that need less space like herbs or lettuce. And while you might not have too much horizontal space on your balcony, you can take advantage of your vertical space and grow plants that will climb. In a container, you can really think about growing up, says Bishop. Cucumbers, for example, will grow up a trellis, or climbing beans. You can really maximize space by growing up.(Related: 10 Easy Plants You Can Grow in Containers)

I dont have any outdoor space

If you live in a home without any outdoor space, you can still create a small garden on a sunny windowsill. There are tons of indoor planters on the market. While some come with bells and whistles like lights and self-watering systems, your basic terracotta or plastic pot with a drainage hole at the bottom will work just as well. If you have a really bright, sunny, south-facing window, [planters with built-in lights] arent necessary, says Bishop. Something to catch the water that will flow out of your pot, like a plate or a stand, is totally necessary though. In an indoor space, you will be a bit more limited in what you can grow, but you can grow just about every kind of herbtheyre typically low maintenance, and just need a sunny window and frequent watering. Bishop also says that microgreens are another easy-to-grow veggie that would work well in an indoor garden. Theyre really high in nutrients, they grow really fast, and they dont need a ton of space, says Bishop. Plus, since youre only eating the sprouts, youll harvest them before they get too big.Now that you know how to start a vegetable garden, here are 37 sustainable swaps to make for a greener spring.

Fan on Box Beam Ceiling

Ceiling fans

Sometimes, it’s not enough to clean what’s in front of you, but what’s up above you as well. “[Ceiling fans] need to be cleaned regularly,”Jacqueline Janus, cleaning expert and owner of cleaning company Two Chicks and a BroomtellsReader’s Digest. “You can’t see up there, but it’s a great place for dust to settle, even if you keep them running. An extendable microfiber duster is perfect for this.”(Related:The Definitive Guide on How Often You Should Clean Everything)
Six seater outdoor patio set

Prepare outdoor furniture

Freezing temperatures outside isn’t an excuse to neglect outdoor furniture. “Take out your outside furniture from storage to give it a good clean for warmer weather,”Jennie Varner, Brand Manager for Molly Maid, a Neighborly Company, tells Reader’s Digest.”Mix up a mild solution of dish detergent and water to clean umbrellas and cushions, and combine 1 gallon of water to cup of vinegar, cup of rubbing alcohol and about 2 squirts of dawn to clean glass tables.” Here are more household uses for vinegar.

window screen

Window screens

There are a few items around the house that you don’t even think about cleaning. Window screens are just those items. “Did you know that rain actually doesnt make your windows dirty? Its when rain passes through a dirty screen and carries dirt and debris with it onto your window that you see splotches after an April shower,”David Flax, Vice President of Operations for Window Genie, a Neighborly Company, tells Reader’s Digest.”Its likely your screens accumulated a lot of dust, dirt, and other contaminants over the long winter, so prevent recurring dirty windows by also having your screens thoroughly cleaned during your first window cleaning of the spring season.”
Light matte wall, white baseboard and tiles immitating hardwood flooring

House trimmings

There are a lot of items in the house that are overlooked for cleaning–and that includes trimmings. “Trimmings like baseboards/wall moldings, doors, and wall switch platesthese are all things that get a lot of use and need to be wiped regularly to prevent grime build-up,” says Janus. To clean these kinds of trimmings, Janus recommends using a damp microfiber cloth or a Magic eraser if they’re really dirty.
Stainless steel kitchen sink with soap suds and cleaning sponge

The kitchen sponge

The often thankless task of cleaning cutlery, dishes, and random kitchenware goes to the kitchen sponge. In the end, instead of actually cleaning it, the solution might be to just toss the sponge and get a new one. Also, check out these changes that can make your home healthier.

Dust blinds

Sometimes, the most overlooked spots in your house that should be cleaned are also the most obvious. Fortunately, dusting blinds is easy to do. “Close the blinds and use a microfiber cloth, a clean pair of cotton gloves or an old, clean sock to run your hand along each slat to pick up dust starting at the top and working your way down,” says Varner. “Next, close the blinds in the opposite direction and repeat.”

Stove panel control

Outside of kitchen appliances

You don’t really think about cleaning the front of a microwave or the knobs of the ovenbut those items can get dirty, too. “These items regularly pick up dust, grime, build up from cooking oils, etc,” Janus says. “Clean the front, sides, and top (especially the fridge, it gets really grimy up there).” Here are some other germ-infested objects you touch every day.

Best thing in the morning

Coffee maker

Coffee makers can get dirty inside just like anything else, and if you’re not using distilled water every time you brew, hard water buildup can take a toll,” says Janus. “Mix a 50/50 vinegar and water solution, add it to the water reservoirand start the brew cycle. I would recommend doing this twice, before running it again with just water 2-3 times to clear out the vinegar.”

Paying the restaurant bill mock up credit card

Credit cards

You may be concerned with cleaning up your credit, but you may also need to clean your physical credit cards, too. “People often forget to clean the things inside their wallets such as credit cards, bus passes, library cards, and debit cards, even though these quickly accumulate germs,” says Varner. “To clean, wipe down with a damp towel or antibacterial wipe. Use a rubber eraser on the magnetic strip to wipe away excess grime.” Also, here are common tricks for avoiding germs that actually don’t work.

Modern vacuum cleaner vacuuming on carpet

Cleaning the floor under furniture

You’ve heard of sweeping something under the rug as an idiom, but you may have also done this… literally. “Tons of dirt, debris and grime hide under things like tables, chairs, couches, etc,” says Janus. “Anything you can quickly slide to the side to vacuum and mop when you’re cleaning your floors should be moved, and bigger items you can use the wand or hose feature on your vacuum.”
Vacuum cleaner

Vacuum cleaners

Vacuum cleaners are an efficient way to clean your home, but they need to be cleaned, too. Unplug the vacuum cleaner when you’re cleaning and empty the bag, if applicable.
Open Refrigerator With Stocked Food Products

Refresh the fridge

When you take out your milk carton for your morning coffee, are you doing a morning check on the contents of your fridge to see what’s good and what’s…not? “Increase efficiency, save money and get ready for fresh ingredients by cleaning out your refrigerator,” says Varner. “Clear out old food and defrost your freezer. Use a sponge and a baking powder solution to wipe out the inside of both your freezer and refrigerator.” It’s tricky to know which foods to keep in your pantry and which to keep in your refrigerator. Also, learn how to Marie Kondo your fridge for better eating.

drawers spring cleaning

Inside of appliances, cupboards, and drawers

It may be convenient to place a clean plate from the dishwasher back in the cupboard, but the cupboard needs to be cleaned, too. Janus recommends removing everything from the inside of those containers and wiping down the inside before putting everything back in. Throwing away expired items is a good idea, too.

Close-up of a striped shower curtain

Shower curtains

Your shower curtain gets dirtyand can often be a breeding ground for mildew. “To clean a dirty shower curtain, put it in the washing machine with two bath towels on the gentle cycle,” says Varner. “Add 1/2 cup baking soda to your detergent during the wash cycle and 1/2 cup vinegar during the rinse cycle. Dont put your curtain in the dryer, but let in air dry instead.”

New rain gutter on a home against blue sky.

Gutters

“Oftentimes, homeowners focus on the inside of their home during spring cleaningbut after a long, harsh winter, its important to evaluate the condition of the exterior of your home as well,” says Flax. “Gutters should be the priority. You want to be sure theyre clean and free of any clogs before the notorious April showers hit. Clogged gutters cause a number of issues throughout spring including water damage, mold, and rotting of your roof and siding, as well as providing a nesting area for squirrels, birds, and mosquitoes.”
Cute ducks on grey oil painting in white rustic bedroom interior with fancy bookshelf and bed with wooden headboard

Bedroom pillows and pillowcases

It may be gross to think about, but if you’re not consistently washing your pillowcases and pillows, you may be sleeping with 1.5 million dust mites. Even though experts recommend washing pillows a few times out of the year, it depends on how often you wash your pillowcase, which should be more frequent.
Single toothbrush in white beveled cup against blue tile

Toothbrush holders

You already know you should be brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day, but there’s another item on the kitchen sink that you may be forgetting to clean. “People usually remember to clean their toothbrush, but what about the holder where its stored?” asks Varner. Thankfully, it’s pretty easy to clean. “Rinse the holder with hot water and use a clean cloth to wipe down the outside. Next, fill the toothbrush holder with an antibacterial mouthwash, allowing it to sit for two minutes. Rinse and run the holder underwater and let it air dry.”

Custom Mini Cooper S

Your car

Yes, you should be cleaning your car regularly, even in winter. Think of how often you’re in and out of your car commuting to work or going grocery shopping…and think of the days of accidentally stepping in puddles or spilling coffee all over the car. For washing your car outside, more care needs to be taken in colder weather. Angie’s List recommends waiting until your car is safely above freezing at 40 degrees F or higher in order to wash your car.

The airpods headset lies on a wooden table.

Earbuds

Gone are the days of popping in your headphones and taking them off without a care in the world. According to Wirecutter, you should be cleaning your earbuds at least once a week with a soft cloth and soap and water. However, you should wipe down your headphones more frequently after every workout.

Smart Phone and Notebook on the Desk

Cell phones

On a similar note, you should be cleaning your phone more often than you think. It might be hard to wrap your mind around this, but you should really be washing your phone as often as you wash your hands. If you think about it, you take your phone everywhere, and, likewise, there are germs everywhere.
Rubber duck with bubbles sitting on bath edge

Baby bath toys

We know children like to have fun outside, but indoor baby bath toys are a lot dirtier than you think. At the end of each bath time, we recommend soaking all your childs bath toys in a tub of warm water and mild liquid dish soap for several minutes, then rinse well with cool water, Debra Johnson,Merry Maidshome cleaning expert, tells NBC. Once dry, store them in a basket or storage bin outside of the bathroom.
Kitchen

Microwave

Sometimes, when heating up food in the microwave contents tend to spill over. But cleaning a microwave should happen beyond just cleaning up a spill. Place wet paper towels in the microwave and then heat for a few minutes. The steam will break down food on the inside of the microwave, and you can then wipe down the sides with a towel.
Open Dishwasher and Kitchen Drawers Cabinets

Dishwasher

It’s important to remember that the things in your home that clean other things need to be tidied, too. “Things that clean other items, like your washer or dishwasher, need to be maintainedlike anything else to make sure they’re cleaning as they should be,” says Janus. “They make tabs you can run through your washer and dishwasher to clean out grime and remove odors.”
All Reasons Weather Collection

Shoes

From high heels to suede shoes, you shouldn’t let your shoes gather dust in the closet and instead clean with the appropriate products. It’s possible to even put some sneakers in the washing machine.

Toilets

You should be cleaning your toilet at least once a week, possibly more given how many people share the space.

This Canadian Soap Brand Is Rooted in Korean Bathhouse Culture https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/korean-bathhouse-canada-binu-binu-soap-house/ Wed, 23 Feb 2022 19:37:15 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67180148 Karen Kim, founder of Binu Binu Soap House, on the inspiration behind the fashion-forward evolution of traditional Korean bathhouse culture.

The post This Canadian Soap Brand Is Rooted in Korean Bathhouse Culture appeared first on Best Health.

Throughout Korean history, public bathing has evolved. In the 10th century, Koreans bathed together in rivers and hot springs. Centuries later, when Koreans adopted tubs, a hot bath was seen as an exclusive luxury for royalty. When the cholera epidemic in the early 1800s spurred policymakers to consider average citizens with no access to indoor plumbing at home, they created public bathhouses, and the modern Korean bath culture was born.Karen Kim grew up in Toronto, half a world away from the Korean peninsula, and launched a fashion career that took her to Vancouver and New York. In 2015, Kim came home to Canada and founded Binu Binu Soap House, a line of bath items featuring simple, elegant soaps rooted in Korean culture. Her Boricha soap is named for barley tea, a staple in Korean households. There is the super-mild Ae Gi, the Korean word for baby, and two soaps named for traditional womens work: Shaman, a charcoal soap, and Haenyo Sea Woman, made with sea tangle kelp and salt and named for coastal women who free dive in the ocean, foraging for abalone, octopus or sea cucumbers to sell and to feed their families.

In her first year of business making soaps, Kim was featured in Vogue. The press hasnt let up since: Vanity Fair, The New York Times, Architectural DigestKims fashion-forward evolution of an ancient practice seems to have struck a chord.Kim first experienced Korean bath culture during a trip to Korea in her late 20s. There, her mother and four aunts took her to a bathhouse spa, or jjimjilbang, every single day. The bathing areas, with their showers and baths, are divided by gender. It wasnt what you would think of as a spa in North America. It was just a modest building, Kim explains. You go in, theres a shower area and you strip completely naked. I was like, What? I remember saying, Okay, Mom, by the way… I have a tattoo. I gave her a two-second warning, Kim laughs. You do a pre-shower. Theres bar soap there. Its very no frills. Once you take off your clothes, you get over yourself really quickly. No ones even looking at you. There is such a sense of relaxation that that brings about, you know? Youre like, Im okay. Youre okay. Were just people. That deep sense of relaxation, for Kim, comes from being in community. North American spas are about pampering and luxury and me time. To me, the bathhouse wasnt me time but us time, which is, of course, a form of self-care too, but its community care. I love that.Kim says her work is a way for her to connect the present with the past. Its a familiar story for children of immigrants. You grow up, you reject being Korean or other, and you try to get as far away from that as possible. And now, Im desperate to just explore that and speak about it. What guides me today is thinking about other people like me, connecting and just being like, Hey, Im here and thinking about these things, too. This story is part of Best HealthsPreservation series, which spotlights wellness businesses and practices rooted in culture, community and history.
