Best Wireless Bras in Canada

Ripping off your mask when you get back in the car is the new taking off your bra when you get home. You might remember this viral tweet that Twitter user @maggiecott231 shared in those early pandemic days, when many of us were embracing our new work-from-home life and thereby our new work-from-home dress code. The look was comfy-cozy, which meant many of us shifted away from confining underwire brasand, arguably, theyve yet to regain their appeal.

As the pandemic stretched on, sales of underwire bras dropped but sales for wireless bras, specifically sports bras and bralettes, were up.As someone who never fully graduated from her training bra, my padded underwire bras were the first garment to be furloughed in my work-from-home quarters. And once the reentry came around, I replaced all those bras with soft, padless bralettes, which comfortably (and proudly) show off my AAs.Turns out that no matter your cup size, bras arent a necessity. According to the Cleveland Clinic, bras dont prevent back pain or improve posture. In general, there’s a lack of research around the definitive health benefits, or ramifications, of wearing a bra. This extends to the rumour that bras can increase the risk of cancer. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, there is no reliable scientific evidence that shows a link between wearing an underwire braor any other kind of braand developing breast cancer. So really, its just a matter of comfort. And for many of us, that means ditching the wires and letting our boobs be free. Are you, too, ready to leave your underwire bras in the pre-COVID times? Here are the best wireless bras in Canada to replace them.(Related: 4 Chest Stretches to Help Improve Posture and Reverse Slouching)

Despite rain, sleet or flurries, getting outside is good for us. How good? Check out these health benefits:

  • Cooler temps can be as therapeutic as icing an injury. Researchers at the National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance in Paris found that the best recovery for seasoned trail runners is cold immersionit can help reduce inflammation, relieving pain, redness and swelling. Whole-body cryotherapy, with temperatures as low as 110 degrees Celsius, was more effective than anything else they tried.
  • Winter weather can also help you with cognitive flexibility and focus: A study of 60 university students found they were better able to reply to metaphorical statements in colder conditions than warmer ones, suggesting low temps can help you brew up abstract ideas. (Warmer weather was better for artistic creativity.)
  • If you have a racing mind, take a walk in the rain. Some people find listening to the steady pitter-patter of the raindropsa form of pink noisehelps soothe anxious thoughts.

The post This Podiatrist Says It’s Time to Hop on the Dad Shoe Trend Already appeared first on Best Health.

Its rare that a style comes along thats both trendy and comfortable. Like the uber-functionable fanny pack that has also seen a recent resurgence, comfy ugly-chic dad sneakers are all the rage today. Stylish TikTok teens tout their chunky-soled sneaker finds in try-on hauls, while celebs like Dua Lipa and Bella Hadid have been photographed in shoes straight out of Jerry Seinfelds closet. The kids are onto something: These kicksunlike high heels such as, say, stilettosare much more comfortable and good for your feet.According to Dr. Sujeet Gupta, president of the Manitoba Podiatry Association, chunky shoes have an advantage over flatter styles and ultra-high heels because they typically have some extra cushioning for the sole and added ankle support. He says, You want the shoe to feel supportive around the ankle so you know that you wont be excessively pronated or supinated. Basically, that means that your weight wont roll onto the inner or outer edges of your feet.If an over-exaggerated sole just isnt for you, you can still take advantage of fashions turn toward the functional by shopping for other comfy sneaker styles. The most important thing to look for when shopping for shoes is a Cinderella fit: Gupta says that finding the perfect size has solved many of his patients foot woes. You dont want too big of a shoe, because then your foot will slide back and forth, which causes friction, calluses and corns, he says. A too-small fit, meanwhile, will cut off your circulation, or cause ingrown toenails, corns and more.To find the perfect fit, advises Gupta, shoe-shoppers should first make sure theres enough space in the toe box, which accounts for the front quarter of the shoe. You always want to allow adequate room between the end of your longest toe and the front of the shoe, he says, recommending about five-eighths of an inch as a guideline. Then, consider the soleopt for something that isnt totally flat, since those shoes lack arch support, which helps your feet distribute your body weight evenly and avoids rolling your weight onto the edges of your feet. Gupta says hes seen patients come in with ankle sprains and partial tendon thickening or tears from wearing flat skater-style sneakers, like Converse or Vans. A lot of those skate shoes, in my opinion, are not the best, and they dont have the support you want, he says. For people who swear by skate shoes, make sure you get a good insole to support your arches.Everyones feet are different, and while it seems like a no-brainer, the best way to find the perfect sneaker for you is by trying them onwhich means making sure you can get to a shoe store IRL, instead of clicking add to cart. Once youre in the store, finding a shoe that fits best may require checking out alternative sizes, like wide or narrow sizing, which are now offered by most mainstream shoe brands. You dont want a super wide shoe, or your feet will be swimming in it and youre not going to get that support, says Gupta. However, if a shoe is too narrow, itll constrict your feet and cut off blood circulation. On that note: Aim to go shoe shopping at the end of the day. After a few hours of walking and standing, your feet will be a little swollen, and your new shoes will be fitted to that size, which avoids the risk of buying shoes that will fit in the morning but be too tight by evening. As well, most people dont have identical feet: Usually, one is ever-so-slightly bigger, so make sure you fit your sneaker to the larger foot. And dont forget to wear socks when you try shoes on, preferably whatever youd wear normally, not the paper-thin hosiery they offer you at the store.Materials are also important to consider when shopping for shoes. Gupta suggests leather because its really durable. Plus, leather is breathable, easy to clean and always stylish. And major bonus: It conforms to your feet over time, leading to a custom fit. Canvas is another great option for an everyday sneaker. Its lightweight and easy to pull on right at a moments notice, he says. Having some mesh in the shoe (like on the top) is especially ideal in the summer, when your feet need to breathe. If your feet are trapped in stuffy shoes all day, especially if theyre a snug fit, youre more likely to end up with blisters or corns. Gupta also likes suede for sneakers, because its naturally soft, cozy and warm, so its good for autumn and winter. Synthetic materials like faux leather and PVC arent bad, but they might be less breathable. In the end, it all depends on what you want out of the shoe. Do you want to be able to pull it on and head out the door quickly? Do you need a bit of warmth for your feet? Or maybe you need some air. All of this will determine the exact materials you pick. And, of course, theres personal style to consider. I, for one, love chunky soles. They look fantastic and, being all of five feet and two inches tall, I appreciate that they give me a slight height boost without wrecking my feet. I also love the literal bounce in my step that I get from all the extra material. If youre looking for a dose of nostalgia to go with your kicks, grabbing a pair of trendy dad sneakers will take you back to the pragmatic 90scomfort included. Plus, if the cyclical nature of fashion has taught us anything, these kicks will be just as hot 25 years from now as when you strap them on today.(Related:How to Find Summer Sandals That Wont Wreck Your Feet)

How to Find Summer Sandals That Won’t Wreck Your Feet https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/womens-sandals-canada/ Thu, 30 Jun 2022 13:00:01 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67175058 Stylish summer sandals can be comfortable too, if you know what to look for.

The post How to Find Summer Sandals That Won’t Wreck Your Feet appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
Whether youre walking around the city or exploring the great outdoors, finding a stylish but supportive sandal can be a huge challenge. Along with warmer weather, clear skies and longer days, the summertime heat can also lead to foot problems like blisters, corns, tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. So, how do you keep your feet comfortable while still looking stylish? We spoke with Dr. Amandeep Randhawa, a Vancouver-based podiatrist at Metro Vancouver Podiatry, to find the best sandals for summer.(Related:7 Beauty Products That Will Tend to All Your Foot Woes This Summer)

What are some common summer feet problems?

According to Randhawa, there are two types of summer feet problems: skin issues and problems with the tissues and tendons.Skin issues include cracked dry skin, blisters and cornsall of which are super common in the summer because of the combination of heat, sweat and friction. These problems are also exacerbated by ill-fitting shoes.Issues like tendonitis and plantar fasciitis also become more common in the summertime. Tendonitis, which is the inflammation of the tendons (most commonly the Achilles tendon which runs along the back of your foot, above the heel) is a common foot injury that spikes in the summer thanks to a more active lifestyle in the warmer months. People who dont usually play sports all of a sudden become active in the summer, says Randhawa. So theyll injure themselves. The same cause is behind plantar fasciitis, the inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your feet and can cause stabbing pain when walking. Both problems get worse when you don’t have comfortable sandals.(Related:7 Shoe Mistakes Youre Making That Hurt Your Feet)

What style of sandal will keep me comfortable all day?

While Randhawa doesnt endorse any particular style, shape or brand, she does note that there are a few components to look for when shopping for summer sandals.First, you want to make sure your shoe has a short, supportive heel. People always say that flat shoes are better, but they could potentially be worse, Randhawa says. You dont want to wear a stiletto or something, but having a little bit of heel support and arch support is important. In terms of what to look for in the heel, Randhawa suggests something thats one to two centimeters high and the sandal should have a deep heel cup to cradle your foot. Then, make sure your foot is stable in the sandalthis will make the shoe more supportive and comfortable, and will also cut down on blister-causing friction. Randhawa suggests finding a shoe with a strap around your ankle (or at least a slingback) and says the shoe should have at least two straps holding the top of your foot in. That way, theres less of a chance the sandal will flip off or trip you.(Related:7 Foot Peel Masks, Available in Canada, for Softer Feet)

What materials should I look for?

Foot problems like blisters and corns are caused by friction and certain materials can worsen these skin issues. Randhawa says that the most important thing to consider when looking at a sandals material is everything that touches your foot, not just whats inside the shoe. On top of materials that wont add friction, look out for materials that are stiff enough to provide heel and arch support.Generally, Randhawa suggests going with a sole (or insole, depending on what sort of sandal youre looking at) thats made with cork or EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate). These materials are light and can provide a bit of a bounce and shock absorption when you walk. For the top of the shoe (whether youre going with a style that covers your foot on top, or something that has straps), Randhawa says that suede is a great choice since it can help absorb moisture and keep you comfortable.

Are there certain summer sandal styles I should totally avoid?

According to Randhawa, flip-flops can cause all sorts of problems because they lack support and destabilize your feet. They make the feet go flip and flop, she says. In particular, those classic go-to flimsy flip-flops are awful for your feet because they dont offer any ankle or heel supportwhich can lead to foot pain or injuries like tendonitis. If youre going out to the pool and youre just going to be wearing them for a short amount of time, flip-flops are fine, says Randhawa. But, if youre planning on walking around or doing something active, she suggests wearing a solid, stable running shoe.(Related:Homemade Foot Scrubs: 8 Recipes to Pamper Tired Feet)

Im already having foot problems! How can I find relief?

For foot pain thats caused by something like tendonitis, the best thing you can do is pre-empt any injuries by stretching before heading out for the day. Randhawa suggests focusing the stretching action on your calves and the bottom of your foot. If youre already feeling sore, try freezing a water bottle and rolling your foot over it for some relief. The rolling helps stretch out the fascia and the muscles while the ice will calm down inflammation, she says. For skin problems like corns and callouses, Randhawa strongly suggests not using over-the-counter removal products. Instead, she advises sticking with a good olfashioned pumice stone to gently scrub problem areas down. For blisters, Randhawa says the worst thing you can do is pop it. Just let it heal and cover it with a loose band-aid, she says.As someone who’s plagued with foot issues year-round (which tend to flare up in the summer when I decide that “yeah, flip flops are good for this hike”), I’ve already got a few podiatrist-approved summer sandal options in my shopping cart that are sure to keep my comfortable all season long. And, if all else fails, I can always go back to my trusty sneakers. Now that you know how to find comfortable summer sandals, learn how to relieve foot pain with home remedies.

Sports Bras For Bigger Busts Hero

Sports bras are a necessity

People with larger busts know the struggle of trying to find cute bras and bralettes (especially at the trendy mainstream stores which never seem to carry anything bigger than a 36D). An even bigger challenge is finding a sports bra that fits (and actually keeps everything in place, dammit!).Sports bras are a necessity for exercise. Since breasts have no muscle and no built-in support, they bounce around freely, guided by the movement of your body. And, as any person with breasts can attest, this can be super uncomfortable.Along with comfort, a well-fitting sports bra is also integral to self-confidence while getting active. It starts young: according to a UK-based study of girls aged 11 – 18, 74 percent reported that their breasts discouraged them from participating in sports, either because they were too big, too small, too painful or, the most common complaint, too bouncy. Sports bras, which decreases bounce and pain, have been shown to significantly reduce embarrassment in young girls and encourage participation in physical activity. Its the same for adult women. One study found that 17 percent of women avoid exercise because of some breast-related factor, and another study found that 46 percent of women with breasts categorized as large feel discouraged from working out because of their breasts.Luckily, there are Canadian options designed with bigger chests in mind. Here are five sports bras for bigger busts.(Related: 6 Amazing Canadian Yoga Wear Brands (That Arent Lululemon))

We Tried Knix’s Super Leakproof Period Underwear https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/period-underwear-review/ Fri, 11 Feb 2022 12:00:59 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67167335 I wanted to see if I could cut pads out entirely with these period-proof undies.

The post We Tried Knix’s Super Leakproof Period Underwear appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
If youre someone who relies on disposable menstrual products, like pads and tampons, you know exactly why period underwear is such a big deal. Theyre made to look and feel like normal underwear, so you can say goodbye to the discomfort of pads and not worry about carrying around tampons. Plus, if you need to be extra cautious on heavier days, you can pair period undies with another product for extra leak-proofing (RIP white jeans, I should have known day 2 was too soon for you).Aside from the comfort factor, switching to period undies is a great way to lower your periods environmental impact. From tampon applicators, to pad wrappers, to pads themselves, standard menstrual products result in a lot of waste. According to UK-based organization Friends of the Earth, a person who menstruates is predicted to throw out about 400 pounds of waste from these products over their lifetime. And while tampon applicators are only used for a few seconds, plastic takes years to degrade (if ever).(Related: Everything You Need to Know About the Arm Implant for Birth Control)These are the reasons I was excited to try Canadian brand Knixs Super Leakproof Period Underwear; I care deeply about the environment and plastic pollution, but I also want to be comfortable during what are usually the most uncomfortable 5-7 days of the month. Going on the birth control pill calmed my monster-periods and I barely bleed enough to justify a tampon. So, Ive been stuck with pads and pantyliners, which, unlike underwear, you never forget youre wearing.Period underwear all work the same way: theres an absorbent gusset (the part of your underwear that covers the genitals) that soaks everything up. Knixs product claims to hold eight tampons worth of blood their triple layer technology is designed to keep you fresh, dry, and protected, says Joanna Griffiths, CEO and founder of Knix. The anti-odour top layer wicks away moisture from your skin using natural seaweed fibre that leaves you feeling dry; the middle-layer absorbs the liquid and locks it in; and the leak-resistant outer layer keeps any liquid from spotting your clothes. The underwear is designed for low maintenance and hygienic use. To wash your period underwear, you can throw it directly into the washing machine, on cold water, with dark colours or you can rinse them beforehand, says Griffiths. Just make sure to lay them flat to dry. They’re also designed for morethan just for periods, she adds. “Bladder leaks, sweat, you name it, Griffiths says. They can be worn to keep you dry and fresh during a workout and they can also help with incontinence.(Related: Everything You Need to Know About Taking Care of Your Pelvic Floor)period underwear review | knix's period undwewear on a peach backgroundThose are some high expectations. But I found there was a lot to love about Knixs Super Leakproof Period Underwear. First, it was a gamechanger to be able to exercise on my period without feeling that uncomfortable pad chafe. Next, I loved just how easy it all was. No more weird squat to insert a tampon. No more loud plastic crinkling as I unwrapped my pad (though, this hasn’t been a problem since transitioning to WFH life). Best of all, clean-up was so simple: I just needed to toss them in with the rest of my laundry (I did rinse them off first, just in case).I started with the brands low to medium flow product, which did feel like wearing normal underwear. Though the gusset did a good job absorbing blood, I wished that it was a bit longer, as I did have a leak into the front of my pants. On my second day, traditionally my heaviest, I tried their Dream Shorts, which is a boy short-style underwear thats designed for heavy flow or overnight wear. The gusset fit better, but the shorts rolled up my thighs and I could feel the edges bunching up under my pants.Despite some of my problems with fit (though this might be temporaryKnix’s website says the fabric is designed to be snug at first but relax with wear and wash), Im definitely going to continue wearing my leakproof underwear when Im on my period. Im glad to have a product thats perfect for my low-flow life, and Im more than happy to just toss them in the wash. Plus, and maybe most importantly, you cant beat the positive impact it has on my environmental footprint.Knix Super Leakproof Period Underwear, starting at $27, knix.ca.Next: The Honest, Expert-Backed Truth About Having Sex While on Your Period

How to Wash Athleisure So It Looks New Longer https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/how-to-wash-athleisure/ Thu, 04 Nov 2021 16:48:46 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67178542 Experts suggest washing our gym clothes and athleisure after every wear to curb bacterial growth, but the laundry process isn’t what you might expect.

The post How to Wash Athleisure So It Looks New Longer appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
Yes, you’re supposed to wash gym clothes after every wear. Generally speaking, the same goes for all that ultra-comfy athleisure and loungewear sets you’re practically living in, too. That’s because the synthetic materials that lend them the stretchy, body-conforming qualities we love are basically petri dishes after they’re exposed to sweat and bacteria found on our bodies and in the air. Gym clothes aren’t inexpensive, though, and the way we wash our leggings, tanks, favourite sports bras, and other fitness gear can make or break the longevity of our athleisure pieces.

How to wash athleisure clothes properly

“Many of these fabrics offer wicking, antimicrobial, four-way stretch, breathability, and compression,” explains Victoria Vandagriff, president of the new women’s active collection from Splendid called Studio. “The biggest issue is that many people don’t know that you shouldn’t wash active apparel and athleisure with fabric softener because it removes the moisture-wicking properties.”If you’re investing big bucks in premium gym clothes and athleisure, it makes sense to preserve the features you’re paying for. While fabric softener is one of the laundry products to steer clear of, athleisure clothes also require a very specific laundry cycle. You’ll want to make sure you’re choosing the safest laundry detergent for your favourite outfits, after all.

The right temperature for washing athleisure

To wash athleisure with care, you’ll want to use cool water. “Many people swear by the use of steam cycles or high-temperature wash cycles to combat the odor build-up on athleisure wear, but this can decrease the life of your clothes,” says Shannon Lenox, in-house scientist at Seventh Generation. “We encourage washing all of your clothing in cold water.”Cold water preserves elastic and stretch-type synthetic fabrics, but Shannon also says it’s great for conserving energy. “By combining loads and washing all of your athleisure wear together, you can minimize your use of hot water cycles. What happens over time is the elastic qualities of athleisure fabrics decrease, which may be caused by over-washing or drying in conditions that are too aggressive high temperatures.”(Related:How Bad Is It to Re-Wear Sweaty Workout Clothes?)

The best fanny packs in Canada

Rumours of the fanny packs demise have been greatly exaggerated. The convenient pouch, often fastened around the hips or, more recently, worn diagonally across the torso, is one of the oldest fashion accessories. And the fanny pack has gone in and out of fashion, a practical bag will always be in style. Not only are fanny packs a great hands-free option for carrying your essentials, but these tried-and-true bags may also be better for your back. Carrying a heavy shoulder bag or purse, where weight is disproportionately distributed onto one side of the body, has been associated with increased back, neck and shoulder pain. Fanny packs offer a helpful alternative. When worn around your hips, fanny packs take the load off your spine and shoulders and improve posture. Plus, thanks to the fanny packs compact size, youre forced to take only the essentials (phone, wallet, keys, mask). So, even if youre wearing a fanny pack as a cross-body bag, youre most likely still travelling lighter than if you were carrying a purse or tote bag, taking that weight off your shoulders and back.Below are five fanny packs available in Canada that we love.(Related:9 Comfortable Wireless Bras Available in Canada)

The importance of sun safety

For years, we’ve known the sun can damage your skin. And while our favorite star keeps us warm and provides beneficial Vitamin D, it’s important to limit its ultraviolet (UV) rays as much as possible. Of course, sunscreen is a daily essential. But there are additional ways you can reduce your UV exposure. You might seek shade or stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day. Sun-protective clothing, like a good hat, offers extra protection. For many, donning a hat is an easy way to prevent harmful UV rays from reaching areas of the skin. That’s why Ava Shamban, MD, a dermatologist in Santa Monica, California, and author of Heal Your Skin, includes a sun hat stand in her office’s reception area. She tells her clients that any hat is better than no hat at all, and when you are considering your sun-protective strategy, hats are a priority.(Related:A Sweaty Gal’s Guide to Sunscreen)

Sun clothing for protection

The fabric of sun-protective clothing is woven tightly and is sometimes coated with a protective layer that’s specially treated to filter ultraviolet rays. Although any barrier covering the skin provides some sun protection, specific sun-protective clothing with a UPF of 50 will block out 98 percent of harmful rays. UPF, which stands for ultraviolet protection factor, is the measure of UV protection a fabric provides. The rating depends on the fibre density, thread count, and other factors, like special treatment with UV-inhibiting ingredients. It indicates how much UV radiation passes through the fabric to your skin.(Related:8 Simple Tricks to Better Protect Yourself From the Sun)

What to look for in a sun hat

Two factors make a big difference in how effectively a sun hat shields you from punishing UV rays: how much skin it covers and how much UV light it blocks.

Buy a wide-brimmed hat

The brim, or border, of the hat, should cover as much skin as possible. Front-brimmed hats, like baseball caps and visors, only shade the eyes, not the skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a three-inch brim circumference or at least a three-inch bill with a permanently attached drape covering the ears and neck. The wider the brim, the more skin protection, so feel free to embrace your inner Audrey Hepburn.”Luckily, many fashion hats are now embracing the fact that SPF is a key factor,” Dr. Shamban says.

Focus on UPF

In addition to the brim, pay attention to the UPF rating. According to the official Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation, your best bet is to opt for a UPF of at least 30.

Double up

“Don’t forget to include sunglasses to protect your eyes,” says Ellen Marmur, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of MMSkincare in New York. “The skin around your eyes is very thin, sensitive, and prone to wrinkling.” Donning sunglasses along with a hat adds extra protection.(Related:8 Simple Tricks to Better Protect Yourself From the Sun)

Why You Should Work Out in a Bodysuit https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/workout-bodysuit/ Wed, 02 Jun 2021 14:52:35 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67173831 A unitard—also known as a workout bodysuit or onesie—is an all-in-one clothing item for yoga, Pilates, cycling, or even running. Here are the pros and cons of what’s essentially a one piece, workout jumpsuit.

The post Why You Should Work Out in a Bodysuit appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
Consider the unitard your new go-to outfit for exercise. The lovechild of a bodysuit and leggings (or bike shorts), workout jumpsuits are taking over fitness studios and Instagram stories alike. The word “unitard” dates back to 1961, but this one-piece is not necessarily new. Just as old styles come back in fashion, so has the unitard. (It’s also adopted a nickname: the workout onesie. Yes, like the bodysuit for babies.) The question, of course, is whether you should wear one while working out.I’ll admit I was curious, so I wore the Beyond Yoga Spacedye Play the Angles Biker Jumpsuit for a few yoga sessions and Pilates classes. I also talked to other fitness pros about their thoughts on moving your body while wearing a bodysuit. Here’s everything you need to know before you buy a workout onesie.(Related: 7 Amazing Canadian Yoga Wear BrandsThat Arent Lululemon)

What exactly is a workout bodysuit?

Remember what Olivia Newton-John wore in her “Let’s Get Physical” video? If not, just picture the outfit most fitness instructors wore in the ’80s: a bright bodysuit over leggings or tight shorts. Sew those two pieces together and you have today’s unitard or onesie. (Though these days, options come in more neutral colors.) You can find them in a few styles, from long sleeves to spaghetti strap tanks and long leggings to shorts. That means you can find one that works best for your body, your workouts, and the weather. These days, options come in much more neutral colors and are made of performance-ready fabrics. They feature materials like the super-soft polyester and Lycra blend of the Beyond Yoga suit I tried. The buttery softness of the fabric (plus its four-way stretch) felt great against my skin, like I was wrapped in a tight (but not too tight) second skin. Like this Beyond Yoga suit, some also have adjustable straps, which is helpful for those with shorter torsos, like me.My only complaint is that the material did feel a bit thick, so if I were doing something super intense (like a high-intensity interval class), I might have heated up more than planned.(Related: Sweaty Betty, the UKs Popular Yoga-Wear Line, Is Now Available in Canada)

When should you wear a workout bodysuit?

The short answer: whenever and for whatever you want. I’ve always found it best to sport tight-fitting clothes for classes like yoga and Pilates, particularly for when you might do inversions like downward-facing dog and don’t want your tank or T-shirt hanging in your face. In that case, a yoga bodysuit works perfectly and doesn’t get in the way of any poses. That same principle holds true for workouts like weight lifting and cycling too.Unitards are comfortable for everything from dance to barre to strength training, says Jeimy Bueno Prisby, studio manager and master trainer at Life Time in Westchester, New York. She even wears them to teach her cycling classes, she says. In other words, there’s no limit to how you sport your onesie, as long as you find a comfortable one that works for you.(Related: 6 Canadian Sports Bras for Bigger Busts)

Benefits of wearing a bodysuit

First off, it’s easy. You simply throw it on and your outfit is complete. Some fit tight enough that you don’t need a bra, and most have a gusset sewn into the crotch area for some built-in protection, meaning you don’t have to worry about underwear. The ease of the unitard is precisely why other fitness pros love it too. “I love the simplicity of a unitard for yoga practice,” says Chloe Kernaghan, cofounder of and yoga instructor at Sky Ting in New York City. “I think they look quite elegant and chic, and you don’t have to think too hard about it.”Finally, because of the second-skin fit and stretchiness of most materials, a unitard should easily move with your body, so you don’t have to worry about it slipping around as you flow from pose to pose or pick up weights or do any other dynamic movement.(Related: 6 of the Best Leggings for Exercising Indoors)

Drawbacks to wearing a bodysuit

The most obvious one is that you basically have to get naked to go to the bathroom. Just like a romper or other one-piece outfit, you have to pull the whole thing down to hit the toilet, which can add a little time and discomfort to bathroom breaks. For example, I went sans bra in the Beyond Yoga suit, so the naked aspect rang especially truenot a big deal, especially at home, but something to consider if you’re out in public.Like with any tight-fitting bottom, you also probably want to change out of the outfit if you get super sweaty. Any set of wet, sweaty gym clothes has the potential to intensify health problems like chafing or raise the risk of yeast infection. Also, I did find that the bike shorts option in the unitard I tried rode up my thighs a bitnot so much that it was super annoying, but enough that I noticed myself pulling the bottom of the shorts down between some poses.I imagine this doesn’t happen quite as easily in a leggings version. And, finally, some people feel self-conscious in such formfitting workout clothing.(Related: How Bad Is It to Re-Wear Sweaty Workout Clothes?)

How to shop for a bodysuit

Both fitness experts I spoke to said to look for bodysuits that aren’t see-through. Check the reviews to make sure that’s not a common complaint of whatever unitard you might buy. Prisby also suggests looking for moisture-wicking materials (often a product will have “moisture wicking” on the label).Kernaghan agrees fabric is important but says to consider the cut of the jumpsuit too. You might prefer a higher neckline, a defined waistline, or a more-supportive top, depending on your personal workout apparel preferences. Kernaghan suggests checking out those from Ernest Leoty, Live the Process, and FP Movement. Prisby loves the unitards from Zumba Wear because of their fabric, durability, and bold patterns.(Related: 11 Best Sports Bras for Summer Available in Canada)

So should you wear a bodysuit for exercise?

I’ll admit, I was skeptical of wearing a one-piece for any type of workout, even one with a slower pace, like yoga. But now, I’m hooked. Because it’s (obviously) all one piece, the suit just feels super comfy, works well in dynamic poses and movements, and is easy to slip on and go. The only time I might skip a unitard is if I’m out all day, doing errands or attending social events before or after my workout. If you have to go to the bathroom often, it’s not the most fun to get naked in the stall, but it’s also not a deal-breaker. I think I’d also wear a tee over the top of the unitard, just for a more flattering fit if I were to go out pre- or post-sweat. In the studio, though, I’m all unitard (almost) all day.”I love jumpsuits because they are a one-stop shop to wearno overthinkingand they shape your curves,” says Prisby. “They are so much fun to bring to a themed class or even as a refresher from the classic leggings and top!”Overall, it’s the perfect apparel option to switch it up and keep moving, especially if you’re on the go.Next: Why You Might Want to Wear Padded Shorts When Biking

Try these expert-recommended options for relief.

The post How to Know If Compression Socks Will Benefit You (Plus 3 to Buy in Canada) appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
You may have heard of compression socks, and may have even been advised to wear them by your doctor or a friend. But what are they? And what do they do? Compression socks can be incredibly effective at preventing a myriad of side effects and even health conditions. These long stockings apply low or high graduated pressure to your legs in order to improve blood flow to your lower extremities, explains Janessie Mena, physical therapist at USA Sports Medicine. They come in a variety of sizes and pressure levels depending on a person’s specific needs.

(Related:7 Amazing Canadian Yoga Wear Brands (That Aren’t Lululemon))

What do compression socks do?

People wear compression socks for all sorts of reasons, but the most common is to help promote blood flow of the veins in the legs, according to Jordan Duncan, a chiropractor at Silverdale Sport & Spine in Silverdale, Washington. “Veins don’t have blood pressure, so they rely on muscular contraction to move blood back to the heart,” he says. “They also have valves that prevent blood from pooling but these sometimes don’t work as well as they should, which can lead to blood pooling in the lower legs.”

Compression socks can help prevent this blood from pooling and can increase the circulation of lower leg veins.

Who should wear compression socks?

There are plenty of reasons to don compression socks, but these groups can benefit the most, says Niket Sonpal, MD, a New York City-based internist and gastroenterologist and faculty member Touro College of Medicine:

  • people at risk for circulation issues (diabetes, varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis)
  • people who stand on their feet all day
  • people who’ve recently had surgery
  • people confined to bed rest
  • pregnant women
  • people on long flights
  • athletes

“These individuals can particularly benefit because the socks can prevent legs from getting achy and tired, reduce swelling, and improve oxygen delivery and blood flow,” he adds.

(Related:Whats the Best Exercise for High Blood Pressure?)

What are the different types of compression socks

There are several different types of compression socks, and each caters to different needs. Here is a look at some of the main types:

Graduated compression socks: Graduated compression socks have the greatest amount of compression at the ankle, according to Dr. Duncan, which decreases the higher up the sock you get. “This type of compression sock is designed for the ambulatory population and is used in the treatment of chronic vein disorders and edema,” he says.

Anti-embolism compression socks: Anti-embolism socks are most beneficial to those who are confined to bed or who are not mobile, according to Dr. Sonpal.

“Those who are recovering after an operation can also benefit from anti-embolism compression socks because they are at higher risk of developing DVT,” he says. “Anti-embolism compression stockings reduce the chances of DVT.”

It’s worth noting, however, that this type of compression socks usually require a doctor’s prescription.

How do you wear compression socks?

Compression socks are meant to be tight around your foot, ankle, and calf, so they can be a bit tricky to get on.

One of Mena’s favorite tricks is cutting open the bottom of a plastic bag (like a grocery bag), putting your foot through first, and then applying the compression sock right over it in order to help it slide up your leg easily. Last, pull the bag out of the sock and tear it to completely take it off. If you don’t want to cut the bag, you can fold it vertically and place part of the bag between your first and second toe, then pull the sock up, and pull the bag out,” she says.

“Talcum powder or cornstarch is also an option to apply around your foot or ankle to make it easier for the sock to slide up,” Mena adds.

Qualities to look for in a compression sock

Here are the features that experts recommend looking for when shopping for a compression sock.

Length: When shopping for compression socks, it’s important to make sure that the pair you’re buying is the appropriate length in order to meet your needs. “For example, if you are someone that typically has swelling in your ankle, then you want to buy a sock that at least goes up to your knee,” says Mena. “You also want to make sure they’re not too long in order to avoid them rolling down your leg or bunching up.”

Pressure level: The amount of pressure the sock has is another top consideration. “If you’re looking for a sock with mild compression, then you want to look for one that is between 8-15 mmHgmedium would be 15-20 mmHg, and firm is 20-30 mmHg,” says Mena. If you’re not sure which amount of pressure is best for you, consult with your healthcare provider.

Quality: “Cheap compression socks have limited sizing options, and if you end up with the wrong size, swelling can worsen,” warns Dr. Sonpal. He recommends investing in higher-priced compression socks, as these will get you the best fit possible.

Sockwell Elevation Graduated Compression Socks

If you’re looking for a pair of compression socks for all-day wear, regardless of whether you’ll be sitting, standing, or walking around the majority of the day, Dr. Duncan recommends this pair, which can also be worn for exercise.

“The graduated compression design of these socks promotes circulation by pushing blood up towards the heart,” he says. “These socks have a snug fit that helps prevent them from slipping in your shoe.”

They’re made from a high-quality fabric that doesn’t pinch in any place. They’re also very breathable, which comes in handy on a hot day or during a workout.

The post Expert Tips on How to Buy a Bike Helmet appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
I started cycling last summer as a way to get outside, get active and combat my pandemic-induced stir-craziness. Im cautious by nature, and while I thought I was taking every safety precaution, a more experienced cyclist friend pointed out that my helmet (which I bought because it was cute and affordable) was designed for skateboarding. Turns out thats not super helpful or safe for biking. If you are as confused as I am about how to pick the right helmet, here are the five expert tips you need.(Related:I Just Bike for FunDo I Really Need Padded Shorts?)

1. Stick to your sport

While there is some crossover among helmets designed for different sports, its usually best to stick to the sport in which the helmet was designed to be used, says Claire McFarlane, the programs and operations manager at Cycle Toronto. Helmets are designed differently for different sports to take into account factors like travelling speed and the way people fall when theyre participating in those sports.

2. Make sure its certified

Choosing a helmet with an approved standards label means youre getting a product thats been rigorously tested by the manufacturer. Look for CSA (Canadian Standards Association), CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), Snell or ASTM (American Testing and Materials).(Related:5 Handy Biking Apps to Amp Up Your Ride)

3. And look for MIPS

The multi-directional impact protection system, or MIPS, is a safety feature on many new helmets. It refers to a yellow plastic liner in the helmet thats engineered to help prevent certain types of concussions by rotating slightly, independent of the outer helmet.(Related:Its the Summer of Two Wheels! Here Are Some Post-Ride Rituals to Try Now

4. Get the right fit

McFarlane suggests using the 2-V-1 method: With the helmet on, you should be able to fit roughly two fingers between your eyebrows and the helmet, the straps should form a V around your ears, and you should only be able to fit one finger between your chin and the helmet strap. You want the helmet to be snug but not so tight that you feel like it would give you a headache if you wore it for an hour or more, says McFarlane.

5. Go on and splurge a little

Safety is priceless, and the more you spend on the helmet, the more comfortable it will be. Helmets on the higher end of the price spectrum tend to have better ventilation, which makes them lighter, more breathable and much more pleasant for longer rides. A lighter helmet has significantly less impact on your neck, says Ira Kargel, coowner of Gears Bike Shop. You wont think its a big deal, but small things like adding a bit of weight to your head and shoulders can have a long-term impact. Now that you know how to buy a helmet that fits, this is why golf is the perfect pandemic sport to get into.

Meet Lyocell, a Potentially Sustainable Fabric That Could Become Your New Favourite Textile https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/what-is-lyocell/ Wed, 07 Apr 2021 18:45:45 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67172017 Made from wood cellulose, lyocell is extremely versatile, feels great on skin, and is good for the environment.

The post Meet Lyocell, a Potentially Sustainable Fabric That Could Become Your New Favourite Textile appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
Recently, while doing some online window shopping, I noticed a new material popping up everywhere: lyocell. Once I noticed it, I couldnt stop noticing it. I found sportswear, underwear, blouses, pants and even bedding made from lyocelland most of the brands selling these products claimed that lyocell was more sustainable than other fabrics like polyester and conventional cotton. Even fast fashion brands like Zara were getting in on it.I started to fall down a bit of a lyocell Google rabbithole. Is the material really sustainable? Or are fast fashion brands just using it to greenwash their products and rehabilitate their reputation? And what about the claim that lyocell is softer than good ol cotton?Heres everything you need to know about lyocell.(Related: 11 Important Single-Use Plastic Swaps to Make for 2021)

What is lyocell?

Lyocell is made from wood cellulose thats made by dissolving wood pulp and mixing it with amine oxide to create a wet, sticky mixture. Then, the mixture is pushed through a machine with holes to make the lyocell fibres, which are ready to be spun into yarn and eventually woven into fabric, after being washed and dried. Lyocell is usually made from eucalyptus trees, but it can also be made from birch or oak trees. The finished fibres are often processed with another material (like cotton, polyester or silk) to enhance the texture, look and functionality. But, lyocell is also often found alone, especially in clothing. [Lyocell] is typically referred to as a natural fibre because its made from plant-based materials, says Candice Batista, environmental journalist and the editor-in-chief of the Eco Hub. So, if you dont add any synthetic fibres, its actually fully biodegradable.

What does it feel like?

Though lyocell can have many different textures (it all depends on how its processed), the basic fabric is soft to the touch, hypoallergenic and doesnt cling. Its also more absorbent and breathable than cotton, making it a favourite for activewear manufacturers. The ability to mix lyocell with other fibres gives a wide range of uses. Aside from clothing, lyocell is used to make underwear, towels and bedding.(Related: What Canadas Ban on Single-Use Plastics Will Mean For Canadiansand the Environment)

How sustainable is lyocell?

Lyocell is considered sustainable because its typically made from eucalyptus trees, which grow super fast, can be grown virtually anywhere and dont need a lot of irrigation, water or pesticides. Lyocell can use less less than half the amount of water during production than cotton does, helping to reduce the fashion industrys massive water consumption. (It takes 2,720 litres of wateras much water as youd drink in three yearsto make a single T-shirt.)What gives lyocell an extra eco-boost is that it doesnt require any toxic chemicals to produce. Typically, textile manufacturers use highly toxic chemicals like trichloroethane, and according to the World Bank, 20 percent of the worlds water pollution comes from textile dying and treatment. Lenzing AG, an Austrian company that manufactures Tencel lyocell (a branded version of lyocell), is able to recover more than 99 percent of the solvent used to make their product in a closed chemical loop that feeds back into the production process.

So, is lyocell actually good for the environment?

In the end, it comes down to how the entire product is madeand the manufacturing system behind itnot just the material used. While lyocell itself has a lot of potential, how sustainable it is depends on whos making and selling it.While a fast fashion brand like H&M, for example, does make 100 percent Tencel lyocell products (meaning they havent blended the lyocell with anything else, so its fully biodegradable), their final garments arent manufactured in a way thats sustainable or ethical. Fast fashion companies buy Tencel lyocell in bulk and then ship it to factories scattered around the world, where working conditions are harsh. Thats really where the problem lies, says Batista. Most of their clothing is made in factories where workers arent being paid well or treated fairly. On top of how workers are treated, its important to think about the environmental footprint of the factory. Lets be real, fast fashion inventories are massive, and these so-called sustainable products make up a tiny fraction of their stock. A couple lyocell garments wont offset the negative environmental impact of a factory that uses a ton of fossil fuels or coal or dumps its waste into waterways and landfills. Pretending otherwise is just greenwashing.(Related: Everything You Need to Know About Reusable Q-tips)

How do I know Im making the most sustainable choice?

Check out the label and do a bit of research before buying an item. If youre looking into a 100 percent lyocell product, see if you can figure out who made the lyocell. Since Lanzing trademarked Tencel lyocell, itll show up that way on your products labels. Tencel is definitely the most common lyocell and looking for 100 percent Tencel lyocell ensures that you know where the fabric came from and how it was made. If the label just says lyocell, it might be worth it to dig around on the brands website to see what you can find out about its manufacturing processes.Brands that are sustainable and ethical will typically trip over themselves to tell you about the good work they do when it comes to making their products. Theyll tell you online, This is the factory it comes from, this is a photograph of the people who make the clothes. Theyre unbelievably transparent, says Batista. And those are the brands that you want to align yourself with.”Another way to make sure youre making the most sustainable choice is by looking at the third-party certifications, which brands will stick on their labels to prove that theyve reached certain standards of sustainability. Since there arent laws in Canada in place to make sure that clothing brands that say theyre sustainable actually are, looking for reputable third-party certification like Certified Organic, B Corp and Ecolabel can back a brands claims. Now that you know about lyocell, find out if shampoo bars, a low-waste alternative, is worth the swap.

Why You Might Want to Wear Padded Shorts When Biking https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/padded-bike-shorts/ Tue, 06 Apr 2021 17:34:32 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67171975 Even if you're just a casual cyclist, investing in a pair of padded bike shorts is well worth it to add an extra bit of comfort to your ride.

They arent just for the hard-core cyclists out there anyone can benefit from riding with a bit of extra cushion. Padded shorts work very simply: The insert, a.k.a. the chamois, acts as a shock absorber while you ride. This cushions your backside and prevents uncomfortable chafing down there, which is especially important during the warmer months, when we sweat more.(Related:5 Handy Biking Apps to Amp Up Your Ride)According to Ira Kargel, co-owner of Gears Bike Shop, padded shorts move with your body to help with chafing and shifting, which you could still experience with a gel seat cover. There are a few things to know before you take the shorts out for a spin. First of all, the chamois is designed to be worn against the skin so no underwear. Second, you get what you pay for. If you spend a little bit more, you get more breathable fabrics, better stretch and a higher-quality chamois with gel or cut-outs for breathability, Kargel says. And third, you might want to invest in chamois butter. Its like hand cream, but for your crotch. If youre going on long rides, this petroleum-free product wont damage the elastic in your expensive bike shorts, and will really help prevent chafing and reduce friction between your thighs and the seat.

How Bad Is It to Re-Wear Sweaty Workout Clothes? https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/sweaty-gym-clothes/ Tue, 16 Mar 2021 16:52:53 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67170796 Thinking about reusing your sweaty gym clothes? Think again.

The post How Bad Is It to Re-Wear Sweaty Workout Clothes? appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
You’re rushing to make sure you get your daily workout in and suddenly realize you have no more clean sports bras. Uh oh. What’s a person to do? Dig through the laundry basket and find one, of course. Most people have probably done this at one point or another whether for a sports bra, leggings, shorts, socks, or a T-shirt, but just how bad is this dirty little secret? It really depends on how much you sweat, your infection risk, the type of garment, and how dirty the item is, says Deanne Mraz Robinson, MD, president and cofounder of Modern Dermatology in Westport, Connecticut.”Dirty, sweaty gym clothing is a breeding ground for pathogens such as bacteria and viruses, and their use can increase risks for superficial skin infections,” says Dr. Robinson, who is also an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University of Medicine in New Haven. On a grossness scale of 1 to 10, she gives this habit a solid 8.Here are a few things our experts want you to keep in mind before you reuse your sweaty gym clothing.

You may smell

Bacteria, sweat, and body oils build up inside synthetic fabrics like your pre-worn sports bra and can cause a funky odour.”This is the immediate problem,” says Philip Tierno, PhD, a microbiologist and pathologist at New York University Grossman School of Medicine in New York City and author of The Secret Life of Germs. The more bacteria in your sweat, the greater the chances that you will stink.

(Related: Natural Deodorant ReviewsWhich Ones Pass Our Sweat Test?)

You may develop a bacterial infection

You have germs all over your skin, but they are your germs and not necessarily disease-causing. (And in fact, in some cases are beneficial.) These bugs feast on your sweat, especially in humidity, and can multiply, Tierno explains. This likely won’t cause an infection without a break or tear in your skin. “As long as your skin is intact, there is a low risk of infection,” Tierno says. “But if you develop a rash and itch or scratch it, you can introduce a small lesion or abrasion and develop an infection.”

This can be dangerous if Staphylococcus aureus (staph) is one of the resident types of bacteria on your skin, as it can lead to infections, including one type, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA is an antibiotic-resistant germ that the World Health Organization and other health agencies are concerned about.

So, what happens if you get sweating in yesterday’s workout wear? Used items may be mixed with other germy clothing from family members, introducing organisms that aren’t typically part of your skin’s bacterial footprint, Tierno says. The possible result: a bacterial infection.

Your skin may break out

Re-wearing dirty gym clothes could increase your risk of an acne outbreak. Your pores can get clogged with sweat and dead skin cells, which could possibly trigger a breakout, says Michele S. Green, MD, a dermatologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.”When you sweat, your pores open up, which makes you susceptible to bacteria that can cause breakouts,” she says.(Related: How Do I Deal With Body Acne?)

You may develop a yeast infection

Yeast lives on our skin, especially in the groin, under the breasts, and in other areas with skin folds. It also thrives in moist, warm, humid environmentsyou know, like the sweaty clothing sitting on your bathroom floor. Re-wearing sweaty clothes can cause your skin to become irritated from exposure to yeast and bacteria within clothing, says Dr. Green.

While you can get away with wearing certain workout items more than once, always wash your underwear and leggingsespecially if you don’t wear underwearafter each use to lower the risk of vaginal yeast or bacterial infections. There’s more friction in that area when you’re exercising, which increases the risk of depositing bacteria or yeast deeper into the skin.

You may develop inflamed hair follicles

Heat and humidity, coupled with clothing that doesn’t breathe and is laden with bacteria, is a recipe for disaster.”During a workout, your skin comes in contact constantly with fabric or skin,” Dr. Green says. “When you re-wear sweaty clothes, any bacteria or dirt from your clothes can transfer onto your skin and trigger an inflammatory response.”

Folliculitis happens when hair follicles become inflamed. It’s one of the skin conditions that can look like acne: small red bumps or whiteheads in areas where you have hair follicles. Folliculitis can be itchy and sore, though mild cases heal within a few days.

Is it too germy to wear?

Dr. Robinson’s rule of thumb is simple: “Once saturated with sweat and visually soiled, it’s too dirty.”You can get away with re-wearing an item for several days, but not for long periods of time, Tierno adds.Never re-wear underwear or leggings, shorts, or pants that you wore when going commando.Material may also make a difference. In one study, 26 people took an indoor cycling class wearing shirts made of cotton, polyester, or blends. A sniff test by a trained odor panel found polyester T-shirts smelled worse than cotton ones, according to the study in Applied and Environmental Microbiology. If you have to re-wear workout gear, hang it and let it air dry in a non-humid place between uses. “Bacteria can’t prosper without water,” Tierno says.

The last word

Re-wearing exercise clothing is risky. You may stink, break out, or develop yeast or bacterial infections. The risk depends on which item you re-use and the amount of wear. It’s okay to do once in a while, but if you are prone to staph infections, the risks likely outweigh any benefits.Next: Sweaty Betty, the UKs Popular Yoga-Wear Line, Is Now Available in Canada

Two years later, Lol was launched. The company used its contacts at Sporting Life in Canada and REI in the U.S. to get the line onto store shelves.Today, Lol puts out around 350 styles a year, including yoga basics but also outerwear and dresses. Canadian yoga wear | Titika

Titika

When Toronto-based personal trainer Susan Bosley wanted a thin-strapped workout top with a built-in bra, she suggested it to her favourite brand, Titika Active Couture. As one of the company’s so-called “advocates,” she offers feedback and promotes the line. A few months later, the Susan Tank was for sale in Titika’s retail and online stores.Fast, flexible and fun: That’s what this Toronto-based brand is about. Titika’s owner, Eileen Zhang, first started working with Courtney Brooke, while both were studying fashion business at George Brown College. Upon graduating in 2009, Zhang decided to do an athletic-wear line, and Brooke soon came on board to handle marketing and branding. The name came from Zhang’s son, William, who, one day, was dancing and singing “Ti-ti-ka! Ti-ti-ka!” She hoped the brand would have that much zest and energy.Zhang had products ready and in a few studios that same year. A location soon became available in Toronto’s Beach neighbourhood, and she decided to open her own storefront. Zhang reached out to contacts in her native Hong Kong to set up a small factory there, which allows her to retain control over the manufacturing process. The company releases new items every few weeks. A capri pant may appear one week with additional lace or a ruffle on the bottom; a hoodie may get a different treatment from month to month with different fabrics.Along with a brisk online business, the company operates three stores in Ontario.(Related: 6 Of The Most Soothing Yoga Poses To Help You Sleep Better)

canadian yoga wear | michi

Michi

If you were in New York City in the spring of 2010 and were working out all the time, you might have run into the most fashionable Canadian fitness buff in town, Michelle Watson. The designer had just left a job creating sportswear for Ralph Laurenshe’d already designed for Donna Karan and Kate Spade since arriving in NYC in 2004 to study fashionand was now testing out her own line, Michi. “I wanted to make stuff that was more creative. It’s hard to do that with a big company,” says Watson. After testing her custom-designed pieces during dance, yoga and martial arts classes, she came out with a small line that focused on undergarments. No one, she felt, was making a bra that was comfortable and looked great, yet still offered good support and shape.Watson and her sexy products got media attention right away, even before the collection hit stores in Canada. “I was lucky. I didn’t have time to do any public relations, but bloggers and the media found me through my website,” she says. That summer, Watson decided to move back to Toronto, where she now manufactures her line of clothing. She rents office space in one of the factories where her clothing is made, partly so that she can help the sewers handle the intricate use of lace and mesh on the pieces. These days, the line includes superhero and lingerie-inspired leggings, jackets, bras, and tops. To Watson, it’s the combination of design, detail and fabric that makes the pieces work outside of the gym, too. She says: “When you wear Michi on an airplane to be comfortable, it looks like you dressed up for your flight.”(Related: 15 Best Yoga Mats on Amazon)

Canadian yoga wear | TerraFrog

TerraFrog

“You have extra large, honey; no one has extra large!” cried actress Yvette Nicole Brown when she first spied TerraFrog Clothing Corp’s Pop Bottle Hoodie. The curvy American actress, from TV’s Community, along with a number of other Hollywood types discovered the Alberta-based label when entrepreneurial sisters Cori and Bobbi Windsor attended an Emmy party last fall. Their success there further entrenched the five-year-old company’s unique appeal: great-fitting athletic clothes in all sizes. The brand came about in 2007 when they spent a leave togetherCori was doing her master’s degree in nursing and Bobbi was on a maternity leave with her second child and doing her master’s in education. That’s when they realized they could not find good-quality, Canadian-made workout gear that covered their long arms and torsos (Cori is five-foot-nine and Bobbi is six-feet). Although they had no fashion experience, they started making drawings, sourcing fabricsparticularly eco-friendly ones like bambooand working with an experienced pattern maker to realize their ideas. A year later, they had their first line, made at factories in Alberta and Ontario, and started selling online. “We wanted to take it slow, get our feet wet,” says Cori. Soon retailers started contacting them, and TerraFrog is now sold in many stores across Canada. The early designs were quite funky, but the sisters now stick to their top-selling basics: sturdy workout jackets, mid-rise bottoms and carefully fitted tanks.Next: Sweaty Betty, the UKs Popular Yoga-Wear Line, Is Now Available in Canada

The post 5 Great Bike Shorts for Women on Amazon Canada appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
Bike shorts might not be anything new in the fitness world, but they’re having a big moment. They first came on the scene in the 1980s, with every aerobic instructor and loyal exerciser wearing them for just about every kind of workout. Well, you know what they say: What’s old is new again. Bike shorts are back in style, with celebrities and influencers setting the trend. But they’re a whole lot different than the 1980s versionmore modern finishes and overall features.

Also known as compression shorts, bike shorts are just as described: short, skin-tight bottoms designed for aerobic exercise, particularly cycling.

“Bike shorts are typically made of a material that is relatively form-fitting, and they always have a seat pad called a chamois that helps reduce friction and pressure from the major contact point of the rider’s bottom on the bike seat,” explains Paul Johnson, founder of Complete Tri, a resource for triathletes and cyclists that provides tips about training and gear. “For anyone who is riding more than just a few minutes, bike shorts are a game-changer in comfort and overall cycling performance.”

The benefits of bike shorts

In addition to the seat pad, which reduces friction between your bottom and the bike seat, there are many benefits to wearing bike shorts during your workout. Most bike shorts are designed to be anti-chafing, meaning they won’t rub against your skin and cause irritation.

The third benefit has to do with safety. “Bike shorts are usually form-fitting, or close to it, for good reason,” Johnson says. “Loose clothing on a bike can be dangerous, as it can get caught in the bike’s mechanics, which could lead to a fall or collision.”

What to look for in a pair of bike shorts

There are several factors to consider when shopping for a pair of bike shorts.

A quality chamois

Not only should your bike shorts have a chamois, but it should provide adequate padding. “Liners in bike shorts are meant to increase comfort while riding,” explains Stephanie Mansour, a certified personal trainer and host of the PBS show Step It Up with Steph. “These liners allow you to cycle for longer without getting uncomfortable or irritated and also ensure that there aren’t any uncomfortable seams.”

There are also bib shorts: shorts that use suspenders or braces, rather than an elastic band, to prevent chafing.

Breathability and fabric

As with any workout gear, it’s important that the bike shorts you buy are breathable and sweat-wickingespecially if you plan on using them while cycling, says Mansour. It makes for a more enjoyable workout and better prepares you for a workout in hotter temperatures. Opt for synthetic fabrics, such as spandex, nylon, or lycra. Unlike cotton, they quickly absorb sweat and allow it to evaporate, which keeps you dry.

Comfort

Comfort is key when it comes to choosing a pair of bike shorts. They should fit tightly, but not so tight that they’re restricting movement, and a wide waistband will be more comfortable.

DurabilityDurability is an important factor to consider when you’re purchasing bike shorts. You need to assess your biking routine, including frequency, duration, and how much you sweat. For example, if you’re likely to bike every day for long periods of time, you should invest in shorts that won’t wear easily.Ask yourself: How’s the seam quality? How much does the fabric stretch? Does it look like it can withstand being washed multiple times a week?Ideally, you want a pair of bike shorts that will last you for a while and meet your specific biking goals.(Related: 7 Peloton-Compatible Cycling Shoes You Can Buy on Amazon)

Countless Canadians have saddled up and joined the Peloton exercise bike craze, especially over the last year. The early days of the pandemic led to the temporary closure of gyms and other fitness centers, leading people to take their fitness home.

In case you’re not familiar, Peloton is a company that sells at-home gym equipment, most notably their well-known cycling bike.

They also offer a streaming subscription that you can buy so you can join in on live fitness classes while using your at-home equipment. (You can also download and use their fitness app for $17 a month even if you don’t have a Peloton-specific bike or treadmill.)

Peloton sells cycling shoes to go with the bike, but you can also use Peloton-compatible shoes and save some money too.

Here’s what you need to know about indoor cycling, what to look for in a Peloton-compatible shoe, and the best pair for your budget.

Benefits of indoor cycling

If you’re planning on purchasing a Peloton bike, or any of these exercise bikes, there are plenty of potential benefits.

Easier to exercise to at home

Not having to leave your house to go to the class, or even get your bike out of the garage, is a major plus.

“This is perhaps the biggest advantage and reason we see the growth in popularity of indoor cycling,” says Roger Adams, a Texas-based certified personal trainer, doctor of nutrition, and owner of eatrightfitness. “It’s easy to use, requires very little training to figure out, and has a short learning curveeven the least athletic among us have no problems mastering the stationary cycle,” he says.

Can be more intense than outdoor biking

While bike riding tends to be a more leisurely outdoor activity you do outdoors to enjoy the surroundings and get some fresh air, indoor cycling is positioned more as a serious, focused workout, explains Adams.

“Indoor cycling tends to have more organized workouts, especially if you are following a pre-programmed routine, than your outdoor bike riding,” he says. “This type of activity is done at a high level and is performed for training purposes usually for triathlons or long-distance cycling events.”

More gentle on your joints

If you have a bad back, knees, or ankles, cycling will likely be more gentle on sensitive muscles and joints, explains Stephanie Mansour, a Chicago-based weight loss coach and corporate wellness trainer.

“High impact exercises like jumping and jogging may hurt sensitive joints, but cycling, however, is gentle on these muscles,” she says. “Because you aren’t landing on the ground harshly, cycling can be a good way to switch things up and give your joints a rest.”

Boosts heart health

Cycling is a great exercise for your heart.

“Maintaining a cycling routine is a great way to lower your [low-density lipoprotein] LDL (bad) cholesterol and raise your [high-density lipoprotein] HDL (good) cholesterol,” says Adams. “Also, keeping consistent with your cycling program will help you keep your glucose levels under control and make you at less risk for developing type 2 diabetes,” he says.

Reduces body fat and adds muscle

After several months of cycling, you can expect to see a loss of body fat, notes Adams.

“Also, by adding some resistance or hills to your routine, you can also add some muscle to those legs in the process,” he says. “Body fat is used from all over the body as you exercise, so you will gradually notice leaning out from all over your body, as long as you pair your hard work with a healthy diet.”

What to look for in cycling shoes

The issue is that many of these purchases are quite expensive, especially when you factor in add-ons, such as Peloton shoes ($165). But before you throw on any old pair of exercise shoes, it’s important to understand why cycling-specific shoes are key.

“Shoes for cyclists actually clip in so you can keep your feet firmly attached to the pedals without worrying about them coming off, which allows you to focus on speed, climbs, hills, and crushing your workout without fearing that your foot will come off of the pedal,” explains Adams. “Also, foot fatigue or pain can be a limiting factor to your workoutthe wrong shoe can stop you in your tracks.”

There are three important factors to consider when buying spin shoes: the sole, ventilation, and in this case, whether it has a three-hole cleat for your at-home Peloton bike.

SoleAn ideal pair of spin cycle shoes should have nylon soles versus carbon (this is common in most sneakers). The reason: Shoes with a carbon sole tend to be more rigid and lightweight, which is good for walking, but when it comes to spinning, you want a pair that can provide you with flexibility and comfort, especially around the ankle area.A stiffer pair can even cause irritation, especially when you pick up speed during your spinning sessions.Ventilation

When working out, it’s important to make sure there’s consistent airflow to prevent your feet from overheating and getting sweaty.

To keep your feet cool, you need to look for shoes that have mesh. This mesh will promote airflow and keep your feet cool and dry.

Three-hole cleats

While Peloton shoes offer breathable upper and mesh ventilation at the base of the shoe, Mansour notes that with Peleton bikes, you can use any type of cycling shoe that has a three-bolt cleat mount (what connects the shoe to the pedals).

“The Peloton uses Delta-compatible cleats, but you can mount these onto any pair of cycling shoes with a 3-screw hole setup,” she adds. (Delta is a popular triangle-shaped cleat.)

The benefits of thermal leggings

Unlike normal workout leggings, thermal leggings are designed to keep you warm while you exercise in cold temperatures, pulling the sweat away from your skin so you stay dry, explains dietitian and nutritionist Roger E. Adams, certified personal trainer and founder of eatrightfitness.com. “Most thermal leggings are made from a combination of both natural and synthetic materials, such as wool, cotton, and nylon,” he says. “The tight compression these garments give you also provide support to tired muscles and may reduce overall fatigue during a workout and provide support during the day,” he adds.

In addition to keeping you warm on a cold day, Ronnie Lubischer, certified strength and conditioning specialist and owner of Lubischer’s Burn and Blast Training, has found thermal leggings to be particularly useful for lifting weights.

“I have my athletes wear thermal leggings during intense heavy lift days because they help increase blood flow to large muscles in the glutes, thighs, and calves which, in turn, will maximize their lifts,” Lubischer says. He adds, “Another added benefit is that the anatomically correct stitching helps reinforce or bolster existing connective tissue (joints and ligaments), which provides added protection during lifts.”

How to choose the right pair of thermal leggings

Selecting the right material is key. Although fleece leggings might keep you warm, you may want to skip them if you’re looking for a pair for exercise, Adams suggests. This is because they can trap sweat on your skin, Adams notes.

He also points out the importance of selecting thermal leggings that fit nice and tight so as to provide support and compression. This, he says, can actually give your workout a boost as it supports your tired muscles and may delay fatigue.

“However, you don’t typically want a really heavy material as it may feel too heavy if you are running outside,” says Adams. “If you are cross-training or doing other types of activity, a heavier legging may suffice, but if you are running or cycling, a thinner material is likely going to feel better and a bit more natural, and still provide warmth and support,” he explains.
