This Jamaican Paradise Deserves to Be On Your Post-Pandemic Travel Bucket List https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/negril-getaway-post-pandemic/ Wed, 07 Oct 2020 18:03:52 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67164890 With its rugged mountains, lush greenery, crystalline waters and unique character, Jamaica stands out in the Caribbean, where the beauty standard is impossibly high.

Theres no place that beauty is better on display than in Negril. The small western beach town with a population of just under 7,000 is mostly known for its pristine Seven Mile Beach (actually only four miles long). Head into town and colourful houses rest against a backdrop of reggae music, traditional Jamaican food and a palpable dedication to island time.

Best Stay

Located on the widest stretch of Seven Mile Beach, this 186-room resort boasts three pools, a waterpark and nine restaurants. While culinary options abound (Italian! Mexican! Japanese!), youll find no shortage of quintessential Jamaican treats on the resort, like Appleton Estate Jamaican rum, Red Stripe beer, fresh seafood and Jamaican patties (pronounced with a hard T, lest you be corrected by the locals).

A post shared by Beaches Resorts (@beachesresorts) on

Coffee lovers, rejoice: The resort serves up unlimited Blue Mountain coffee, grown right in the islands Blue Mountain range, which are some of the most sought after beans in the world. Indulgences aside, there are plenty of ways to keep busy on the property: Stop in at the award-winning Red Lane Spa for a deep tissue massage or coffee scrub treatment (using those same high-quality coffee grounds), or soak up the sun while trying your hand at a variety of water sports, like waterskiing or stand-up paddleboarding. But we cant blame you for just wanting to settle in on a lounger, as this resort has a prime vantage point for beachside sunsets.

Best Sweat

Organizing your trip around a sporting event may not seem very relaxing, but we beg to differ. Combine fitness with fun and sign up for the annual Reggae Marathon, which happens every December. The race, which has options for a full marathon, half-marathon or 10K, loops around Negril on a flat course and ends in a beach bash, where you can enjoy coconut water (straight from the coconut) or Red Stripe beer in the early hours of the a.m.

A post shared by Reggae Marathon (@reggaemarathon) on

Wading into the ocean after the race is one of the most euphoric experiences youll have on vacation, and sticking around to listen to local reggae acts is a close second. And the traditional carb-loading pasta party the night before, where you can try countless plates of pasta, including Rasta Pasta (a unique mix of pasta, seafood and jerk seasoning), is a close third.(Related: Expert Tips for Training for a Half Marathon)

Best Hang

A trip to Negril isnt complete without a visit to Ricks Caf, an iconic restaurant and bar that has been opened since 1974. One of the most spectacular watering holes in Jamaica, this scenic bar is famous for a reason: Its set atop a 35-foot cliff. Take in live music (spoiler: a lot of Bob Marley, not that were complaining) and ocean views while you sip. Oh, and youll get to spectate as locals, tourists and even children cliff-dive into the ocean below. Its known for being one of the best places to take in a sunset on the island, and the unforgettable ambience lives up to all the hype.

Best Activity

If adventure tops your vacay to-do list, check out Jamwest Motorsports and Adventure Park. Hop on an ATV and follow rocky trails and oceanside paths to Salmon Point, a small fishing village, where you can have a drink and take in the scenery. If youre adrenaline averse, opt for a more relaxed activity, like horseback riding. Dont worry if you get hot the horses will wade you into the ocean for a revitalizing dip.(Related: 6 Reasons Swimming Is Good for You)

Best Nosh

Stop in for another cliffside experience with dinner at Pushcart, one of the restaurants of the Rockhouse Hotel & Spa (a celeb favourite). The restaurant aims to give diners the full island experience via their taste buds, serving up fare from its many regions to its home-cooked meals.

Start with The Push-Cart cocktail, a refreshing and spicy mix of house-made ginger-pineapple syrup with soda water and local rum. Nosh on peppa shrimp, sauted in local Scotch bonnet pepper sauce and served with bammy (a traditional flatbread made from the root vegetable cassava), or try the award-winning jerk chicken, served with plantain and festival (another uniquely Jamaican treat). And dont forget to finish the meal with rum cake.Next: This Tiny North Atlantic Island Is a Seaside Haven

I thought the nice people moments were just a fluke. First, there was the gracious cab driver who picked me up at the airport and made me forget about my long day of travel. Then there was the funny receptionist who checked me in at the hotel and sent me off to my room with a smile on my face. But at breakfast the next day, the waiter made a point of asking and using my name. And the doorman stopped to make real conversation, not the usual gonna be a hot one today variety. Then it dawned on me: This wasnt a fluke; this was a way of life.

Welcome to Bermuda

In a world that seems to grow more distant and competitive by the day, its refreshing to visit a place where folks take a genuine interest in connecting with you. If youre looking for a model of healthy living, this idea of connection is a pretty good starting point. According to a Stanford University study, our social networks are key to our health, boosting our immune systems, extending our lives and helping us recover more quickly from diseases.Connectivity wasnt what I was expecting to write about when I travelled to this tiny North Atlantic island to explore healthy living. Since Bermuda is famous for its pink beaches, turquoise swimming coves and spectacular golf courses, I imagined that my wellness wins would come in the form of being active.(Related: How Wellness Experts Cope With Coronavirus-Related Stress)To be sure, there was plenty of activity (see my faves below), but this concept of conscious cordiality flew home with me. Now, in addition to tracking steps and sugar intake, I track sociability. Take it from me, it is the easiest of the three to manage and comes with a side of instant gratification. Turns out, smiles really are contagious.

Tempest Bistro

Stop here if you want to taste some of the best seafood dishes on the island. Fish chowders, rockfish, cod fishcakes, wahoo and black grouper are just some of the offerings youll find on the menu. The restaurant, originally a carriage house in the historic town of St. Georges, sits on the waters edge and is a great place for people-watching. This Resort in B.C. Is Mixing First Nations Heritage with R&R https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/cranbrook-travel-guide/ Tue, 21 Jul 2020 20:11:37 +0000 https://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67161867 Cranbrook has taken repurposing to the next level, and tourists are reaping the benefits. Here’s why you should add it to your post-pandemic travel plans.

The post This Resort in B.C. Is Mixing First Nations Heritage with R&R appeared first on Best Health.

]]>
For as long as I can remember, Ive always wanted to learn more about Canadas First Nations. I never thought Id have the opportunity to dig deeper than what I learned in my history textbooks as a child. I definitely never thought Id be awakened by the squawking of geese while spending the night in a teepee, just footsteps away from a former residential school. But thats exactly what happened on a recent trip to Cranbrook, B.C., where I had the chance to take a glimpse into the world of Canadas First Nations. There, I saw how this town has taken the idea of repurposing to a whole new level, starting with a residential school that is now a resort.Cranbrook travel guideThe St. Eugene Mission school was in operation from 1912 to 1970, during which Indigenous children were taken from their families and forced to assimilate into Canadian culture. But today, the red-brick building that has affected thousands of children over generations has been transformed into St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino. The property is solely owned by the Ktunaxa Nation, a local Indigenous group that has lived on the land for more than 10,000 years. We couldve called it the Ktunaxa Resort, but we had to recognize exactly what it was and reclaim it, says Sophie Pierre, former chief of the Aqam band of the Ktunaxa Nation and a residential-school survivor. We changed the narrative, so to my granddaughter, its just a hotel where she is excited to play, and thats part of the healing.

Where to stay

St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino offers 125 rooms and suites and a par-72 championship golf course. The picturesque views of the Rockies to the east and the Purcell Mountains to the west are nothing short of breathtaking. Fisher Peak, the highest summit of the southern Rockies, dominates the hotels backdrop. (Here are some other great Canadian golf courses worth checking out.)Cranbrook travel guideThe friendly staff complement the warm, homey ambience of the resort. On the walls, youll find First Nations artwork and framed photos of past chiefs. On the lower level of this upscale hotel is the Ktunaxa Interpretive Centre, where guests can learn more about the history and culture of the Ktunaxa Nation through photos and artifacts. Dont forget to ask the front desk about Legends Night, where you can enjoy a bison burger (think beefs gamier cousin), followed by stories around a campfire told by a Ktunaxa Elder.During my stay, I took part in Speaking Earth, a program that dives even deeper into Indigenous culture. From learning how to raise a teepee (which makes putting up a tent look like childs play) to playing traditional games to handcrafting my own dreamcatcher, it truly was a unique and fulfilling experience. The program is currently open to groups of six to 24 people.Cranbrook travel guide

Where to eat

Another repurposed building is Fire Hall Kitchen & Tap, located in downtown Cranbrook. This rustic hotspot was previously known as Fire Hall No. 1, and it still has the fire truck doors, brick walls and, of course, a sliding pole. The gastropub has tons of craft beers to choose from, including What the Huck Huckleberry Wheat Ale, which is native to the Rocky Mountain region. It offers a unique twist on comfort-food classics, including tuna poke nachos and a fiery jalapeo green salad.Cranbrook travel guideEnd your day on a sweet note by visiting Happy Cow, the go-to dessert spot for locals and visitors alike. You can choose from a wide variety of homemade treats, including vegan sorbets, froyo and ice cream (their most popular flavour is honeycomb and, trust me, I still crave it from time to time).

Where to bike

Up for a sweat with a scenic view? Slather on the SPF and go for a 25-kilometre ride on the North Star Rails to Trails. As the name suggests, its a paved trail on a converted railway bed that connects Cranbrook to its neighbouring city, Kimberley. The best workouts are the ones that make you forget youre working out. Throughout the ride, I was surrounded by panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, lush forests, lakes and rivers need I say more? If youre looking for a more challenging ride, check out the Chief Isadore Trail, where you can bike 44 kilometres on rugged terrain. Everyone I passed, whether they were on foot or bike, greeted me with a wave or smile. As a first-timer to the West Coast, I found the welcoming nature of the locals to be reason enough for me to plan my next visit.Next, find out which Canadian city has everything you need for a feel-good weekend getaway.

As I was begrudgingly cleaning my junk drawer the other day, I stopped to flip through my old passports. It struck me that there are two places that repeatedly dot their pages: Italy and Vancouver. It occurred to me that, while the two spots dont have very much in common, the unique appeal of each was so strong that travelling there seemed well worth my hard-earned dollars throughout my 20s.After my trip to Sonoma County, I realized that its the love child of these two spots: It has Italys enthusiasm for food and wine and Vancouvers culture that implores you to get outside. The scenery is a stunning combination of both places: Sonoma Countys three regions span from coastal sea villages and redwoods to rolling hills and vineyards. Whats more, you get something different from every town and city you visit and there are 30 (!) in total. With everything I adore condensed in one scenic place and so much more to explore, I have no doubt that there will be another stamp repeatedly tattooing my passport throughout my 30s and beyond.Sonoma, California | Where to stay

Stay Here

Take a winding drive up the coast to Timber Cove Resort, dramatically positioned on one of Calis most stunning coastlines (case in point: Ansel Adams often shot there). Youll be greeted by a cozy resort thats heavy on kitsch, with record players in each guest room and a homey lobby with a wood-burning fireplace, board games and a bar. The menu at the on-site restaurant, Coast Kitchen, is filled with local produce, freshly caught seafood like grilled swordfish and oysters, local brews and craft cocktails. Consider this resort your 70s-chic home away from home. But take note: the beautiful coastal drive is full of hairpin turns on the way back.pizza and caprese salad

Dine Here

The Bay Areas food scene wouldnt be much without the help of local produce from Sonoma County and Petaluma. Theyre well known for dairy, eggs and fresh produce, like avocados and olives. Stop in at Wild Goat Bistro, where you can taste the local goods in a rustic, converted mill. Try the shishito peppers or Caprese salad with local burrata. But save room for the pizza its what this place is best known for. Take a post-dinner stroll through charming downtown Petaluma, but exercise caution: it’s so cute it could result in the desire to relocate.where to hike | sonoma california

Hike Here

Release your inner tree hugger by hiking among the California redwoods. The misty, winding trails at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve lead to awe-inspiring trees like Parson Jones, which stands at 310 feet tall (longer than a football field) and is the tallest tree in the world. This rainforest is also home to Colonel Armstrong, a tree thats more than 1,400 years young.

8 Reasons Quebec is the Ultimate Winter Destination https://www.besthealthmag.ca/list/quebec-best-winter-destination/ Mon, 20 Jan 2020 15:31:09 +0000 http://www.besthealthmag.ca/?post_type=listicle&p=67146844 Heading south to escape winter? You're missing out on some of the best adventure Canada has to offer. Here's why Quebec is the ultimate winter travel destination.

Quebec is the best winter destination

Winter is no excuse to hibernate

A little snow or sleet wont keep you inside when theres so much to see and do in Quebecs vibrant cities. From food tours and art exhibits to public ice rinks (Atrium Le 1000) and outdoor music festivals, Montreal has something going on every weekend of the winter season. And, if the temps really are too much for you, theres still a way to get to where you want to go. Montrals Underground City is a pedestrian network under the downtown core. More than 30 km of pathway make it easier to get to metro stations, shopping plazas, hotels and more. An estimated 500,000 people use it daily.

The worlds coldest music festival

Igloofest is an outdoor winter festival that brings together thousands of electronic music lovers to dance under the stars at Montreal’s Old Port. Beyond the incredible musical lineup, festival attendees love coming for the winter playground that is known as Igloovillage and the annual snowsuit costume contest, of course!Igloofest 2020 (its 14th season!) kicks off January 16th and runs every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening until February 8th.

Warmth and style

Staying warm doesnt mean sacrificing style. Quebec is home to several renowned fashion designers and brands, and naturally, they excel in stylish outerwear.Mackage, a popular outerwear brand is based out of Montreal, as are outerwear brands Moose Knuckles, Rudsak and Soia & Kyo. Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has worn several Montreal designers and was recently spotted wearing Soia & Kyo’s Saundra down coat (pictured).Saundra mid-length classic down coat in Army, $695 at soiakyo.com.

Quebec is the best winter destination

Hockey

Montreal is of course home to one of Canada’s seven NHL teams, the Montreal Canadiens, aka the Habs. The franchise is one of the “Original Six” teams to make up the NHL and Quebec takes a lot of pride in the history and success of the team with the Canadiens having won the Stanley Cup more times than any other franchise. The team has a strong and loyal fanbase in Quebec, many of whom come out to cheer for the team when it plays at the Bell Centre in Montreal. One of those fans is Diane Bibaud, the Montreal Canadiens organist. Bibaud has been playing the organ at the team’s hockey games since 1987. Shes been a symbol at games for more than 30 years and has even garnered her own fanbase.

Any excuse to spa

Cold temps are the perfect excuse to indulge in a little self-care, wouldnt you agree? Take in a breathtaking view of Montreal from the deck of Bota Bota Spa sur Leau, a floating spa located on a docked boat. If you’re lucky, your experience might be blessed with a gorgeous snowfall you can watch as you move through the thermotherapy water circuit.Love the sounds of a low-key vacation? Be sure to check out our editor’s guide to Quebec’s wellness scene.

Eat local, even in winter

Quebec is a foodie’s dream destination. Indulgence is encouraged and there’s plenty to choose from. The province produces most of the cheese in Canada, and is well-known for brie and other soft ripened cheeses. Plus, we have Quebec to thank for poutine and fondue. Don’t worry, a little winter weight will keep you warm!Be sure to visit Caf Ricardo, a popular restaurant chain by Quebec chef, author and TV personality, Ricardo Larrive. If you want to get more hands-on, ice fishing is a popular activities in the winter. Give it a go at Parc de la Rivire-des-Mille-iles. You can go on your own, or with a guide who will also demonstrate how to clean and prepare your catch, and then you can taste your fresh-cooked fish on site.

Quebec is the best winter destination

Some of the best ski hills in Canada

Mount Tremblant is the oldest ski resort in Canada (and the second oldest in North America). Ski season lasts from November through April and the four slopes of Mt. Tremblant offer more than 90 diverse ski trails for everyone from beginners to veterans.Don’t ski or snowboard? This charming resort town has plenty more to offer. Book a dogsledding adventure, or take a nighttime snowshoe and fondue tour up the slopes to a rustic cabin where you’ll dine on hot fondue and wine before heading back to the village. There’s also a Scandinavian spa (Scandinave Spa) and several chic aprs-ski spots you can check out after a day of outdoor activity.

Maple Syrup Season

Eventually, winter does come to an end in Quebec but when it does it offers up the sweetest send-off: maple syrup season. This sweet stuff is considered liquid gold in Canada, and Quebec is the largest producer in the world! (In 2012, thieves stole $18.7-million worth of maple syrup in whats become known as the Great Maple Syrup Robbery.)The end of winter and beginning of spring is the perfect opportunity for a trip to the sugar shack and Quebec is home to more than 200 for you to choose from.Ready to embrace the snow? This Hawaiian Destination Is a Self-Care Haven https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/waikiki-travel-hawaii/ Mon, 13 Jan 2020 21:20:05 +0000 http://www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67145812 Great beaches, hiking and spas make Waikiki perfect for prioritizing self-care, as our editor-in-chief, Beth Thompson, recently discovered.

Its always darkest before the dawn. I was thinking about that phrase literally, not figuratively as I made my way to the Waikiki beachfront for a traditional Hoala sunrise ceremony. Let me tell you, at 5:30 in the morning, its dark like, need-a-flashlight dark.Of course, Im always up before the sun IRL. But given the demands of a typical day, I never have the luxury of stopping to contemplate what sunrise actually means or why it matters; it just happens. You know, right?

This morning was different. The only demand on me was to find a good spot to roll out my towel. So I had time time to sit on that dark beach, the sand cold and damp beneath me, the waves lapping gently in front of me, and think about my place in all of it.It was a transcendent experience: As dawn approached, I felt connected to the earth in a way I never had before. And in those fleeting moments when the inky sapphire sky gave way to a brighter shade of pale, I was completely energized with the possibility of new.Kinda profound, really and all before a cup of coffee. No wonder the Hawaiian people created the Hoala ceremony to welcome each day. Its a pretty awesome experience.

The new spin

For somebody who has wanted to go to Waikiki since The Brady Bunch travelled there in 1972, you can bet I had a long list of adventures planned hike Diamond Head, try canoe surfing and explore Pearl Harbour, to name a few. Im certain that these activities top most folks itineraries, but there is more to Waikiki than meets the postcard. For starters, theres an earnest desire by the locals to reclaim the traditions that gave life to the islands distinct culture, and you dont have to look far to experience this renaissance. In addition to hotels like the Marriott Waikiki Cvomplex, which offers the Hoala ceremony, there are hiking companies, like Hawaii Forest & Trail, that provide a range of island tours, explaining as they go about the importance of indigenous crops and vegetation and what they mean for the survival of the culture. On these tours, youll learn about the massive reforestation projects now underway to repopulate the land with indigenous vegetation a process that will take several generations to complete, our guide told us.But you dont have to travel into the mountains to experience the revival. Unique cultural offerings are all around you. Restaurant menus are filled with dishes using local ingredients, and spas are incorporating meaningful rituals into their therapies, all of which allow you to connect with the earth (and yourself) in ways you cant experience at home.Being authentic is important to this state, not as a tourist gimmick but as a genuine way to make sense of life. As one of our guides said, Our parents generation tried hard to be American, but younger generations are trying hard to revive our culture and get back to our roots. To that, I say E ala e awaken and arise to all that Waikiki has to offer.

Moana SurfriderBuilt in 1901, the Westin Resort & Spa beachfront property is the oldest hotel in Waikiki. She doesnt show her age, though, thanks to many upgrades and renovations, including a nearly 20-million-dollar rejuvenation in 2014. This property checks all the boxes for a perfect tropical holiday: beachfront access, ocean views, a luxury spa and a variety of dining choices. Given that its a Westin property, you can be assured of a great wellness program that features a host of activities, including a 24-hour gym, morning yoga sessions, running and aquasize programs and, because its Hawaii, weekly hula lessons, natch.

Ritz-Carlton ResidencesIf youre looking for an authentic island experience but craving an urban home base, the Ritz-Carlton is the place for you. Just a short walk from the beach, the Ritz-Carlton offers two eighth-floor infinity pools with private cabanas, a luxurious spa and several dining options, including Dean & DeLuca for a quick gourmet bite and The Horizon Terrace, an airy outdoor bar and patio where you can enjoy signature cocktails and scrumptious eats. To keep holiday pounds at bay, theres a state-of-the-art fitness centre, designed by celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak, thats open 24/7. But its the ultra-chic rooms that seal the deal here, complete with balconies with beach views, smart TVs, a kitchenette and an en suite laundry, so youll want for nothing.(Here’s how to maintainhealthy sleep habits while travelling.)

Best eat

La VieNew to the Ritz-Carlton, La Vie just opened this past summer. With a menu developed by executive chef Shaymus Alwin, the focus is on classic French-inspired cuisine using local ingredients. I had the chance to preview a tasting menu that included Truffled Asparagus la Nage with Hamakua Mushrooms for a soup starter and Hapalua Wagyu with Pommes Aligot and Beef Tongue Bordelaise for a main. Instagrammable and memorable! The service matched the food, which is to say first-rate.

ZiguFor something a little off the beaten track, check out Waikikis newest farm-to-table Japanese restaurant. Well, not just Japanese. As the owners say, Our menu is not going to be strictly Japanese or any particular style. The only rule when it comes to our menu is that we use only fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Still, its definitely Asian inspired. Expect to be surprised and delighted with dishes like Applewood-Smoked Waimana Egg and Potato Salad and Kale Udon with Basil Pesto. Oh, and try the sake. Divine.

Best activities

Hoala CeremonyAn inspiring way to start the day, this traditional sunrise ceremony includes Hawaiian chants that are meant to bring awareness to the suns gifts and encourage moments of personal reflection. It rounds out with an early-morning ocean dip to cleanse your body, mind and spirit. This portion is supposed to be done in reverential silence, but, um, the water is a tad cold at that time of day, so don’t feel bad if you let out a screech or two.Diamond Head trailYou cant visit Waikiki without making a trip up Diamond Head, the iconic volcanic formation thats visible from much of the city. From the trailhead to the summit, its 1.3 kilometres, with a 171-metre climb. Toward the top, theres a steep 99-step walk, but dont be deterred: The view from the summit is breathtaking. At a leisurely pace, with time for photos, you can complete the circuit in about two hours.

Tip: Go early in the day to avoid the hot sun. (To help you stay protected, check out the best sunscreen for your scalp, lips, ears and all those other easy-to-forget places.)

Best spa

Moana Lani SpaOahus only beachfront spa, this property offers 17,000 square feet of pampering. Each treatment begins with a hoawe bowl ritual, where you imagine emptying your worries into a bowl of salt, which is then removed from the room while you enjoy your treatment. At the end of the day, all of the salt collected is returned to the ocean. My fave treatment? The Stones of Apuakehau, an 80-minute session where your legs and feet are wrapped in awa mud and local river stones are placed on your back and neck to draw out toxins, followed by a full-body massage.Ritz-Carlton SpaYou dont need to stay here to book a treatment in this beautiful and contemporary spa. For a traditional island experience, try the Hoomalu treatment. Translated as a sense of peace, this therapy starts with a leg and foot mask, followed by a hot volcanic stone treatment and lomilomi massage think flowing massage movements where the therapist uses their hands and forearms to knead and stretch your taut muscles.

Planning ahead

If you find it hard to organize activities before a trip, check out this website for easy vacay planning. Simply type in your destination and start exploring all the offerings. All of the tours and activities have been vetted, and many come with travel tips from local experts. It really takes the hassle out of organizing activities. You dont have to be a Marriott Bonvoy member to book, but you can earn points by booking activities and members can redeem activities with points.

Grand Cayman a 35 kilometre-long island floating in the Caribbean Sea, west of Jamaica is best known for finance and the Tom Cruise classic The Firm. But it has so much more going on, like famous beaches, a foodie culture and natural wonders.

Stay here

Opened in 2016, the Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spawas the first resort to be built on Grand Cayman in a decade and on the world-renowned Seven Mile Beach, no less. Spoiler alert: It was worth the wait. The magic didnt happen when I leapt off the side of a sailboat to snorkel along a vibrant strip of coral near a quiet beach on the Red Sea. It didnt happen on a sidewalk in Aqaba, where I feasted, family-style, with my travelling companions on fresh fish served on a bed of rice, accompanied by platters of warm pita and bowls of velvety hummus. It didnt even happen when I rested my arms on the edge of an infinity pool and sipped a crisp mojito while gazing out across the Dead Sea (although, I have to admit, the preceding weightless soak in its salty waters, followed by a muscle-melting massage, was pretty amazing).Blissful, unforgettable, bucket-list travel moments? Absolutely. But they werent the moments that defined my trip to Jordan. No, it was the desert of Wadi Rum that did it. And that is maybe the coolest thing about travelling: You never know when the true magic is going to happen for you. And so often, it has more to do with a person than it does with a place.

In this case, that person was Tyseer.

Tyseer is a once-nomadic Bedouin-poet-turned-desert-tour-guide. Resplendent in a long white thobe with a traditional red and white shemagh protecting his head from the sun, he shepherded us across the Jordanian desert in his battered white Nissanfour-by-four, which fishtailed wildly through the sand sideways over dunes as he spun the wheel in time to the upbeat Arabic music blasting from the radio (his grin got wider with each barely muffled gasp from the back seat).Millie - man and camel in JordanBefore visiting Wadi Rum, which means valley of the moon, for me, desert was synonymous with sand, so the dramatic sculptural arches, red sandstone mountains, deep caverns and craggy rock faces that looked like the weathered cheeks of desert nomads came as a complete surprise. Otherworldly and mysterious, Wadi Rum is the perfect setting for space movies (The Martian, Star Wars Rogue One and Red Planet were all filmed here), and thousands of petroglyphs and inscriptions on its rust-coloured rocks are evidence of a human history that long predates its modern movie-star status.Tyseer was born in this desert and moved to a small village at its edge when he was five. Im 30 now, and every day I still see something new in Wadi Rum, he says. The sand dunes move with the wind, and the shapes and light are always changing. Humming popular love songs under his breath (there are 37 words for love in Arabic, he tells us) and calling to wandering camels (who come to him), Tyseer is often quietly introspective. The rest of the time, he is up to something.En route to a traditional Bedouin lunch, he roared his truck up to a solid wall of rock and hopped out with an animated Yallah, yallah (Come on, hurry up), only to stop suddenly and feign dramatic disbelief. Where is our lunch? he cried, arms raised indignantly to the sky. It was supposed to be here. The grin reappeared as he led us under a secret, shadowy arch to where patterned rugs and pillows had been laid out on the sand.Millie - people sitting on rugs and pillows in JordanAfter a meal of malfouf (stuffed cabbage rolls), shrak bread baked over a fire and zarb (a Bedouin barbecue buried and cooked over coals in a deep hole underground), Tyseer whisked us off again. He neglected to mention that we were on our way to climb the Burdah Rock Bridge, reputedly one of the highest natural arches in the world. We balked at the bottom, but Tyseer yallahed us up the steep, narrow rock face. I couldnt help but wonder if thered be a fence, along with a sign of someone climbing up the rock with a red line across it, anywhere else in the world. Without Tyseer, who somehow convinced us that we werent in any danger, I never would have made it to the top of that arch, and I never would have been rewarded with a breathtaking, panoramic view of the crimson desert landscape bathed in soft, late-afternoon light. And if it hadnt been for Millie, a new women-only travel and lifestyle company, I never would have met Tyseer or experienced the true magic of Wadi Rum. Millies founder, Chelsea Brown, first travelled to Jordan in 2017 to support a Canadian initiative for Syrian refugees. She fell in love with the country and its people, and Millie is the result. Brown returned four times to create the foundation for our trip: luxurious hotels, charming restaurants and extraordinary adventures. (Learn how to maintain healthy sleep habits while travelling.)

Millie trips are more than just good travel stories.

Millie was created to give women an opportunity to form genuine connections with communities around the world and foster self-discovery and kinship, she says. Our trips go beyond travel; they are about building lifelong friendships through meaningful experiences. To that end, Brown cultivated relationships with the people we spent our days with, who added an extra layer of depth, meaning and magic to our time in Jordan. In Amman, we spent a morning immersed in a woodcarving lesson delivered by Syrian refugees who shared their stories and craftsmanship. At night, we dined al fresco in the company of Jordanian politicians and intellectuals in the walled garden of the former minister of tourism and antiquities. We also explored Petras 2,000-year-old streets in the company of a local guide named Mahmoud. While other travellers jostled for selfie space at the base of the citys magnificent Treasury a feat of human ingenuity immortalized in sandstone Mahmoud quietly led us up a path that is so seldom used, only he could see it (though its one he knows well, considering that he was born in one of the 850 caves carved into the ancient citys cliffs). Standing at the top of one of those cliffs, we looked down at the bright, tasselled awnings of local merchants and watched a small camel caravan drift past a theatre that dates back to the first century AD. It was easy to imagine what the city must have looked like when it was home to the long-lost civilization of the Nabateans and caravans of 1,000 camels routinely passed through Petra, loaded with incense and spices.

These are the magical moments every traveller hopes for.

To have so many on one trip still fills me with gratitude for the people who helped make them happen. Back in Wadi Rum, before we retired to enjoy the night sky through our clear-ceilinged bubble tents, we collected brush from the spiky bushes that dot the desert so that we could build a fire for our tea and watch the sun set over the mountains. Tyseer told me he loves the mountains because they give without taking. They bring the rain and protect us from the winds, he says. The greatest compliment you can give a friend is to say theyre like a mountain. While we waited for the first stars to appear, I sat next to Ghada Saba, one of those so-called mountains. She is Jordans first female film director and founded an NGO to help abolish forced marriages. (A tattoo on her right arm translates to Dont get angry; get mad.) We talked quietly about Canada and Jordan, marvelling at our similarities and celebrating our differences. Theres a strong connection between Jordanian and Canadian women, she told me. Were the same. We have similar values, and its important for Canadian women to come here to experience that. Travel helps us to understand one another better so that we can do great things together. And therein lies the magic.Next, learn why Palm Springs is the ultimate wellness getaway.

hotel etiquette

Wearing your bathrobe out and about

There is a time and a place to wear your bathrobe, and it’s not at the hotel restaurant. According to Pedro Richardson, who’s worked in the hotel industry for 12 years as a waiter, receptionist, and manager, recommends guests keep the robe for the spa or pool areas. “I understand they feel more comfortable and at home, but when you are staying in a top luxury hotel, it just doesn’t go with the environment,” Richardson says. In one of the hotels where Richardson worked, a top UK CEO actually would go to the restaurant in his bathrobe, a big “no-no,” according to Richardson.

hotel etiquette

Demanding a room early

The only way to really guarantee an early check-in is by booking the room for the night before your arrival, according to Richardson. Otherwise, don’t demand access to your room before the regular check-in time. “As a rule of thumb, if the room is ready we will give them early access,” Richardson says. “But this is not always possible due to high occupancy the previous night.” Odo Ovrevik, co-owner of the Rosewood Country Inn, says not to get upset with staff if your room isn’t ready early. “There is no way we could get the room ready in no time,” Ovrevik says.

hotel etiquette

Snapping your fingers at staff

Don’t snap your fingers at hotel staff to get their attention. This is rude, embarrassing behaviour, and just plain bad manners, according to Richardson. (Find yourself on edge? Thesesupplements can help you stress less and feel good.)

hotel etiquette

Turning the hallway into your personal space

Hotel guests need to be respectful of noise control, especially in halls. This common area is not a playground for your kids or a spot to speak loudly, according to Angela Rice, the co-founder ofBoutique Travel Advisors. “Children will release their energy by running and occasionally screaming down hallways of hotels, especially if mom and dad are not watching,” Rice says. “Parents are often too preoccupied to recognize how this routine impacts other guests.”Emilie Dulles, who has more than 29 years of experience in traditional hotel etiquette, adds that hotel guests sometimes forget to be on their best behaviour. They should act as if they ambassadors to their family instead of taking advantage of being away from home and acting so rudely, Dulles says.

hotel etiquette

Using things you don’t need

It’s easy to forget or be lax about conserving energy while travelling, but you can still do your part without lots of effort. Although hotel guests don’t receive a specific utility bill, you should turn off lights and the TV when you leave the room. And be mindful of conserving water to support our environment, Rice adds. “In becoming more eco-friendly, some hotels are rewarding guests by offering loyalty rewards for turning down daily towel, bedding, and even cleaning services,” Rice says.So if you don’t need it, whether that’s a service or a light, don’t waste it. Rice also says to take the half-used bathroom toiletries with you since what remains goes directly in the trash.

hotel etiquette

Crowding the check-in area

Some hotel guests interact with others at the receptionist area to be friendly. “Like being in an ATM machine, many people prefer privacy when they are checking in and out of hotels,” Rice says. “So remember to respect the privacy of others.” All travellers are tired, which is why you need to know how togerm-proof your plane seat.

hotel etiquette

Over-reserving

Reserving more than you need is similar to using up services or energy that aren’t necessary. Another example is guests reserving more poolside seating than what’s truly essential for their party, especially when travelling during peak season when there is limited space, according to Rice. “If you are going to be in and out of the water, maybe recognize you don’t need a chaise lounger for every person and that loungers and chairs can be used interchangeably by those in your party,” Rice says.

hotel etiquette

Talking like a sailor

The lobby, lounge, restaurant, and pool areas are spaces you share, not your home. Speaking loudly or using foul language either on the phone or with another person is amongst the rudest habits of hotel guests, according to Dulles. “We should all be cognizant of other people within earshot inside hotels and not allow the volume or content of our conversations to announce our presence as we move through hotels,” Dulles says. Instead, keep your conversations discreet and polite to ensure that you blend in elegantly and keep the mood in common areas delightful for everyone. It’s also a good idea tostay clear of theserude money habits, too.

hotel etiquette

Trashing your room

One of the perks of staying at a hotel is not having to make your bed. The cleaning service, however, is no excuse to leave your room in complete disarray, according to Dulles. “Housekeeping is there to tidy things and make a pleasant arrangement of your room, not pick up after you or spend hours folding strewn clothes just so they can vacuum or dust,” Dulles says. As a rule of thumb, keep your clothes in the closet or on a chair, put your toiletries in your personal bag, and leave enough space for walking around your room without the risk of tripping over bags or laundry.

hotel etiquette

Overdoing it on the cocktails

Having too many drinks sometimes leads to a lack of self-awareness and composure that translates to a rude habit, especially when you’re at the hotel pool or bar. “Make no mistake, drunkenness is rudeness,” Dulles says. “Disorderly and drunken behaviour is rude towards the other guests and also the hotel staff as it can make them feel uncomfortable and even unsafe.” Make sure you drink water between cocktails and call it quits when you recognize you have too many drinks. (Not a fan of plain water? Check out our favouriteflavoured water recipes.) As Dulles says, there’s no need to recreate The Hangover during your hotel stay.

hotel etiquette

Ignoring policies

Being a rude hotel guest sometimes comes down to ignoring policies.Ovrevik says that people don’t pay enough attention to the fine print. “It can be on our website, it can be in our emails, it can be all over the place,” Ovrevik says. “They are still going to not follow instructions.” This disregard for the rules is a habit that’s rude to the hotel staff, as well as other visitors since policies like no pets, or parking rules, are in place for a reason. Now that you’ve learned proper hotel etiquette, next find out how to have your own summer wellness retreat in NYC.

Here's how.

NYC summer getawayMovies ruined New York summers for me. Thanks to scenes of leaf-crunching strolls through Central Park (Im looking at you, Youve Got Mail) and sparkly Christmases in Rockefeller Center, I always felt like it was a city best explored in the colder months, wool coat on and hot beverage in hand. Summer holidays should be for enjoying places with natural beauty and getting your fix of sun, sand and relaxation. Not only that, but its a good time for a mid-year break, and NYC seems like sensory overload. I was content to leave the sizzling stoops of brownstones free for the real New Yorkers to loiter on. But after this trip to Manhattan, I realized that summer is the season to visit. The weather is just right, theres a softer side to discover (with help from NYCGO, the digital equivalent of having a New Yorker friend) and, yes, theres even natural beauty. Punctuate the trip with a beach vacation within your vacation and youre golden. Heres how to have a relaxing NYC summer getaway. And if you’re from Toronto like me, the travel can be relaxing to boot just a quick flight with Porter by way of a ‘gram-worthy island airport.Punctuate the trip with a beach vacation within your vacation and youre golden.

Stay here: The James New York NoMad

Opened in early 2018, this 337-room boutique hotel in the NoMad district is steps from some of the hoods that make NYC shine, like Greenwich Village and Chelsea. Aside from the as-chic-as-it-is-cozy atmosphere, the wellness touches make it a great home base to do your thing from, such as in room-massages and a 24-hour fitness centre (complete with Peloton bikes). They even offer a digital detox program: Your phone is locked up during your stay, and if you complete the challenge, youre offered 10 percent off your booking fee just make sure to get the hang of the numbered streets before you ditch Google Maps.

Trip over to hip and happening Brooklyn to enjoy this sprawling urban garden with magnolia-lined paths and ponds bobbing with lotuses and lilies. Explore the distinct gardens within, including the Shakespeare Garden and Cranford Rose Garden, but make time for the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden. Complete with a koi pond, its the most visited Japanese-inspired garden outside of the country. Indulge in a scenic lunch at Yellow Magnolia Caf, where youll dine on veg-focused fare in an airy space overlooking the lily pool.

Hit the town here: Gallow Green

Visit the historic McKittrick Hotel (home to Sleep No More), and travel to the roof to find Gallow Green a restaurant that takes the term atmospheric to new heights. Lush greenery, twinkling lights and cozy dining nooks in gutted vintage train cars create a unique secret-garden environment that competes with sweeping views of the city. But the food isnt about to play second fiddle (or third fiddle, if you happen on a night with live music) to the surroundings. Nosh on fresh spring veg with a photo-worthy crudit bowl (spoiler alert: flowers) or indulge in creamy burrata with heirloom tomatoes before moving on to a kale and anchovy pizza that gives authentic NYC slices some competition.

Jen RubioNo one knows travel quite like Jen Rubio. As the co-founder and Chief Brand Officer of luggage company Away, Rubio is a next level frequent flyer. Here she tells us her travel essentials and how she manages to stay healthy while away.As the co-founder of a luggage company, you obviously know your way around an airport. How often do you travel?I fly over 150 flights per year. Travel, for me, is not just what I do, but how Im able to do all of the things I do: travel allows me to accelerate the growth and awareness of our business, to meet and recruit team members, attend conferences, events, photo shoots, immerse myself in a market before we launch in it, to see my friends and family, and to get inspired!Do you prefer to stick with a carry-on or are you a checked bag person? Whats your favourite Away item (luggage or accessory)?Because my travel plans change so often and so quickly, and because I tend to show up to the airport on the later side, I avoid checking a bag at all costs, even when Im traveling to multiple destinations or climates.I can always pack everything I need in just The Bigger Carry-On, and can easily fit close to two weeks worth of clothing. Since I only bring one suitcase, organization is key: packing cubes are a lifesaver for mewe created a line of our own at Away. Theyll save you so much room and keep your clothes neatly organized for different days and occasions. What five travel essentials are always in your carry-on?

 1. Airplane air is so dry, so I slather on Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask before takeoff. Sometimes, Ill even dab a bit on my cuticles, elbows, or anywhere else that feels dry.
 2. T2 Matcha Flask has become my new favourite travel companion. I love that I can be almost anywhere in the world and still have my morning matcha. Theres a tiny, stainless steel whisk on the inside, so I just ask for hot water, pour in a CAP Beauty Matcha Stick, and shake.
 3. Smythson travel jewelry tray is a must for keeping my valuables safe and organized. No more leaving rings by the hotel sink or necklaces on the nightstand!
 4. A simple, black silk slip dress because it goes with anything. In the winter, Ill dress it up with boots and a chunky sweater. In the summer, all I need is sandals and some fun jewelry.
 5. Bose noise canceling headphonesa must for the airplane.

Whats your in-flight routine?Since I travel so much, Ive really mastered my in-flight beauty routine. I always remove any make-up before a flight, and Ill usually do a face mask from Dr. Jart on the plane, followed by a hydrating face mist (my favourite is Tata Harpers Hydrating Floral Essence), which Ill also occasionally spritz throughout the journey. Hydration is key, so Im also reapplying lip balm and drinking a lot of water for the duration of the flight. I finish with a jade roller along my face, which helps reduce any puffiness. How do you manage to stay healthy with all the travel you do? What do you do to stay active?Ive also learned to rely on a few tricks for staying well, no matter where I am in the world. Wellness supplements, like elderberry, help keep my immune system in check during especially busy travel weeks. I also make sure to squeeze in a few hours of uninterrupted sleep whenever I can with the help of noise-cancelling headphones, and I use Vitruvi Balance roll-on essential oil blend with calming lavender and chamomile to help destress.I dont enjoy working out on my own that muchI love the energy and the direction of having a trainer or being in a class, but thats tough with my schedule and my constant travel. When Im on the road, I do ModelFit streaming, which is videos of my favourite workout class in New York, or use the Glo app for mobile yoga and pilates classes. (For a quick and effective workout on-the-go, try this 10-minute resistance band workout.)Do you have a favourite pre- or post-flight stretch? As soon as Im off the plane, I drop my bags at the hotel or Airbnb Im staying at and go for a walk. I love to head right out to stretch my legs after a long flight, and bonus points for using the walk to explore the neighbourhood and find a few great spots for drinks or dinner. Ill usually ask the hotel concierge for their personal recommendations on my way out to get a sense of what the local favourites are and what direction I should be heading.Window seat or aisle?Always aisle! I love being able to get up and stretch my legs if I need to, especially during a long flight.Anything you can share about whats next for Away?Weve always said that luggage was only the beginning for Away and that our broader vision has been to transform the entire travel experience. We recently announced that we closed a $100 million Series D funding round, so we continue to remain focused on our long-term goals of creating a new kind of travel brand that hasnt existed before Away, which is exciting! Were beginning to take the first steps towards realizing that vision by expanding into three new product categoriesApparel, Lifestyle Accessories, and Wellness. Like all things at Away, were using feedback from our community to inform what well offer within each of these categories, and were in the early stages of developing what that might look like. Were excited to figure out how else we can play a role in travellers journeys, not just focusing on what you use to pack, but also what you might need to bring with youthis might includes things like skincare and supplements, or thoughtful apparel for more comfortable travel. Were also focused on growing our physical retail footprint with 50 additional stores in the next three years, while further establishing the brand worldwide.Next, read up on the the best places for travel every month of the year.

The grapes had just been harvested when I arrive on two wheels to taste a couple of beautiful Bordeaux-style reds at Te Mata Estates. The winery is at the edge of Hawkes Bay, on the east coast of New Zealands breathtaking North Island, where Im visiting with my husband. I look up and see the imposing Te Mata Peak, always visible in the regionit rises almost 400 metres above the big blue South Pacificand soak in the spectacular setting of this renowned wine region that Im about to explore. We’re spending our day doing feel-good activities: cycling, hiking and tasting wineand appreciating all the moments in between.

Getting there

Air New Zealand flies at least four times a week direct from Vancouver to Auckland. Its a 14-hour flight. If you can, grab a Premium Economy seat for amazing service and comfort. But this airline has a well-deserved reputation, so even an Economy class seat is a cut above most other airlines. In my experience, the ANZ staff cant do enough for you.

A bike ride to mindfulness

Youll love trying the e-bike, Jamie, my tour guide from nearby Napier City Bike Hire & Tours, reassures me before we set out. Im not convinced; Ive always thought of e-bikes as cheatingcheating myself of some good exercise. I’m an honest rider for most of our 24-km ride, past acres of vineyards filled with grazing sheep, but then we hit a strong headwind on a stretch along the ocean, and I appreciate being able to just flip a switch to get an extra boost of power. It allows me to enjoy the scenery more than I may have if I had to think about pedaling harder to make it through.

This Hawkes Bay area has a large network of smooth-surfaced bike routes, with wineries to stop at along the way. We choose the grandiose Elephant Hill winery. I get a crisp chardonnay and acknowledge its sharp notes as I gaze into the green, just-harvested vineyards surrounding me.

A moment of hygge

After cycling farther, we stop in at Hygge Cafe, which is on Clifton Bay.Its a comfy spot for a rest and suitably namedhygge is the Danish term for coziness. It’s located at the foot of the notorious Cape Kidnappers (it was named after a 1769 incident in which local Maori kidnapped one of Captain Cooks ship crew membersand then gave him back unharmed).

We grab a picnic table by the ocean to sit at while we sip coffeethe coffee culture in New Zealand is second to none. (Do you know the best time of the day to drink coffee?) We enjoy salads made with fresh local ingredients, including locally-made grilled halloumi, organic greens, figs and apple.

A calming hike

Later, we ditch our bikes and drive up along the twisting road to the top of Te Mata to walk one of the trails. There’s a large network of walks, all quite steep, and all offering incredible vistas of mountain peaks and ocean. Theres even a hang-gliding launch platform from the peak.

Te Mata is revered by locals, in part because of the Maori myth surrounding it: When the giant chief Rongokako died trying to prove his love for the beautiful Hinerakau, his body became the high peaks of this range, forming the ridgeline known as The Sleeping Giant.

Everywhere I turn, there’s a scenic picture that captivates meand there are also lots of photo opps (see above!).

(Planning on going hiking? Here’s everything you need.)

An evening for living in the present

After a day of cycling and hiking under blue skies, it’s a pleasure to head to our own retreat called Poplars, one of many bespoke accommodations offered by Black Barn Vineyards. Ours is a spacious luxury two-bedroom bungalow complete with wood fireplace, top-of-the-line kitchen and Scandinavian-styleddining area. My husband and I each take a glass of Black Barns pinot noir out to the terrace overlooking the Te Mata range and the vineyards below, with not another person or building in sight. Despite the many excellent restaurants in the area, we know that cooking dinner for ourselves in this place that feels like home is a no-brainer.

Quebec Spas

As crazy as it sounds, making a plan to de-stress can be very stressful.

Honestly, there are so many questions to answer: Where to go? For how long? And what activities will give you the most bang er, quiet for your buck?Good news: We can help lighten your load. First off, congrats on making the decision to indulge in a little TLC its money well spent. Research backs this up. According to a study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, spending just one week at a wellness resort has myriad benefits, including helping you lower blood pressure, reduce weight and ward off depression. The best part is that it appears to be the gift that keeps on giving. When those same study participants were contacted six weeks after their trip, they were still enjoying the health benefits accrued on holiday.Being a dedicated journalist, I thought it would be best to test the theory out personally I mean, someones gotta have your back, dear readers so I took it upon myself to head to Quebecs Eastern Townships for a week of spas, hikes, healthy eating and mindfulness. When it comes to options, Quebec is a great place to start, especially the Eastern Townships. Situated about two hours east of Montreal, this region is a natural paradise, dotted with lakes, valleys, mountains and forests. Like Quebeckers themselves, the hospitality industry takes pleasure and pampering very seriously. Its been hosting visitors for more than 200 years, so it knows a thing or two about making folks feel at home. The fact that it boasts four all-season national parks is no small thing. Skiers, snowshoers and sledders flock to this winter wonderland, only to be replaced by bikers, hikers and campers in warmer weather. The area has no shortage of inns, restaurants, shops and spas in the quaint villages that sprinkle the region. Here are some editor-approved ways to make the most of your week of wellness.

First stop:Htel William Gray

You really need to ease yourself into a healthy getaway. I mean, you could jump right in, but you wont be doing yourself any favours. Give your body at least 24 hours to transition from a work to wellness state of mind that way, youll easily absorb the bliss thats waiting for you.Where to stayCome for the gorgeous rooms, and stay for the luxury spa. The recently renovated Htel William Gray, a boutique hotel inthe heart of Old Montreal, captures the citys vibe of moving seamlessly between old and new, luxury and simplicity, style and substance. You notice this most in the hotels public spaces a gorgeous living room area decked out with couches, tables and a fireplace, as well as the restaurant with a living wall that the chef plucks fresh greens from for dinner. But for the wellness traveller, its the luxe spa you’ll remember most. Here, youll find a soothing all-white salt room, thermal hydrotherapy circuit and state-of-the-art massage beds, including a heated, granular quartz-based one that your body literally sinks into. Heaven!

Where to playThe best way to get off the merry-go-round of life is to step onto the Ferris wheel of Old Montreal. The largest observational wheel in Canada, this 60-metre-high ride is total escapism. Forget the rickety wheels of county fair days; this beauty includes temperature-controlled gondolas with music (you can even plug in your own) and offers spectacular city views that will give you a new perspective on life literally.

Where to eatIts impossible to pick just one restaurant in a city known for its magnificent cuisine, but since were talking wellness, my mind organically wanders to LOV. And dont think for a minute that youre depriving yourself of the provinces traditional dishes. Vegan poutine, anyone? Cheese curd is replaced with vegan cheese, and brown gravy gets a miso makeover. Also worth trying:the restaurants signature tacos, and the Big LOV Burger, a stacked sandwich smothered in a special Big Lov sauce.

Second stop:Le St-Martin Bromont

Now that youre chill, its time to hit the road for pastoral views of the Eastern Townships. First up, Bromont.Where to stayCheck into Le St-Martin Bromont Htel & Suites and youll be ideally situated to take advantage of all that the area has to offer. The hotel makes it easy with numerous stay-and-play deals, including ski, spa and culinary packages. Youre also in easy walking distance of great shopping just sayin.Where to playWhats your pleasure: spa, hike or maybe both? Hiking at Mont-Orford National Park, about 30 minutes from town, is a four-season wonder. Covering an area of nearly 60 square kilometres, this park is a microcosm of the township itself, replete with lakes, forests and mountains to explore. Hiking, biking, skiing and snowshoeing are seasonally available, and an outfitters shop at the parks entrance makes it easy for you to gear up from head to toe. In search of a more adventurous vacation? Here are six reasons to visit Lac Beauport, Quebec. If the spa scene is more your idea of wellness, check out Balnea Spa. Its thermal circuit is second to none and includes a Turkish bath, Finnish saunas, several outdoor whirlpool tubs, a sweat lodge and a forest basin. The fact that its set on a stunning 400-acre private reserve with a private lake at its heart just ups the wow factor. You can easily spend an entire day here without repeating anything unless, of course, you want to.

Third stop: Spa Eastman

Where to stayFeeling rested, youre ready for a 360-degree wellness indulgence hello, Spa Eastman. Founded in the late 1970s by Jocelyna Dubuc, this sprawling retreat, tucked into the foothills of Mont-Orford, is a sanctuary for those seeking a little P&P thats peace and pampering. Dubucs vision from the get-go was to create an environment where you could reset, relax and recharge, depending on your needs. The pace is purposely slow. You need to make time for time, says Dubuc. Bottom line: You shouldnt rush wellness like its an item on your to-do list, she says. To benefit from it, you need to immerse yourself in it. Read more on why Quebec spas, like Spa Eastman, are the perfect place to rejuvenate.Where to playIf chilling is your idea of play, youll find many ways to do just that, starting with the on-site spa services. Check out the signature massage, delivered with nature-infused hot oils, from head to toe. Your therapist works with you to choose the most appropriate essential oils, but they all get you to the same place: bliss. If youve come looking for physical activities (yoga, hiking, swimming) or mental stimulation (think wellness seminars), you wont be disappointed. A daily activity schedule lets you plan your time (morning to night), with almost all sessions available in both English and French.

Where to eatThe on-site restaurant focuseson farm-fresh cuisine and delivers it in several ways: hot and cold buffet options, as well as a full menu at every sitting. Theres a focus on vegan and vegetarian, but meat eaters wont be disappointed, as all diets are represented. Between meals, a cheery caf serves beverages and baked goods. After all, a week of wellness requires ongoing sustenance. Now that you’ve got the lowdown on our fave Quebec spas, hit up Hollywood’s celeb-approved wellness hotspots.

Disney Magic Kingdom Orlando

Easily get your steps in

Canadians in search of the “sunshine vitamin” are known to head south to Florida thanks to the state’s idyllic weather. But there’s plenty more to see and do, especially when it comes to boosting your wellness. For starters, put on your Apple Watch and explore Orlandos most popular theme park, Walt Disney World. With four separate parks, theres plenty to see and we guarantee youll hit your 10,000 steps. The newest attraction, Pandora World of Avatar can be found at Disneys Animal Kingdom. Be prepared for a bit of a wait, but trust us, its worth it.

citrus spa body scrub

Locally-grown ingredients will nourish your skin

Canada may be rich in apple orchards, but Orlando produces some of the juiciest fruits, many of which have some serious skin care benefits. Citrus fruits like orange, lemon and lime are a natural source of vitamin C which has a brightening effect on skin tone.Honey (a natural antibacterial) is also featured prominently in several spa treatments thanks to hydrating and healing benefits. The divine scent certainly induces a feeling of calm. After a day exploring, revitalize your body with an exfoliating scrub from top to toe. The Sweet Orange Body Glow treatment (45 minutes) at the Ritz Carlton Spa begins with a citrus exfoliation, followed by a massage and oil application. Even more indulgent is the Grande Citrus Escape, a two-hour treatment that begins with an antioxidant-infused scrub made with honey and sweet orange. The escape wraps up with a scalp treatment and full-body massage.A visit to the Waldorf Astoria Spa will make you feel like the Queen Bee thanks to a serene spa environment located on a nearly 5acre nature preserve. Walk the grounds between appointments. We recommend booking the 80 minute Honey Butter Massage and a 50 minute spa manicure complete with honey scrub, mask and a honey butter massage.

Orlando balloon ride

You might just gain a new perspective

A flight with Orlando Balloon Rides is a once-in-a-lifetime ride that offers breathtaking views of Orlando and the surrounding area. While the hour-long flight is incredible, another noteworthy part of the experience is the pre-flight preparation where you’ll witness just what goes into a successful flight. The adventure will begin before dawn as you travel to the take-off field and watch the crew inflate your ride. The early take-off time isnt just so you can see a stunning sunrise; its the only time the humidity in Florida is low enough to safely fly hot air balloons. (In order for a hot air balloon to climb, the air inside the balloon must be warmer than the air outside it.) The wind is also generally calmer in the early morning which makes for a smoother ride and landing. After the balloon is inflated, youll hop in your hot air balloons wicker basket (dont worry its reinforced with steel) and as your pilot opens the burner to release more hot air into the balloon, youll slowly begin to climb higher. Our pilot with Orlando Balloon Rides was equal parts tour guide and entertainer. There were plenty of jokes flying around (HA!).

Harry P Leu Garden Orlando

Reap the benefits of nature

Immersing yourself in nature has some powerful physical and mental health benefits. According to Dr. Qing Li, a Tokyo-based medical doctor and author of Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness, two hours in the outdoors is enough to increase energy, decrease anxiety, reduce stress, and bring about a general state of relaxation. Youll have no trouble spending well beyond two hours roaming the 50-acre botanical oasis that is Leu Gardens. Each month brings different blooms so you can visit anytime of the year and still witness its beauty.

Orlando Paddleboard

Water activities for any fitness level

Book a lesson or lake tour with Paddleboard Orlando, located just off Orlando Avenue on Lake Killarney. This water workout is easy on the joints and an excellent strength workout, especially for your arms and core. (Want proof? Look no further than the toned bodies of celeb fans Jennifer Aniston and Matthew McConaughey.) Plus, the rhythm of the waves and paddling along the sparkling waters will leave you in a very meditative state.

Escape Game Orlando

Boost brain power

When your body needs a break, flex your mental muscle with a visit to The Escape Game Orlando. You and your fellow team members will be locked in a room and left to solve your way out under pressure, of course. A 60 minute timer will be counting down from the moment the door locks. Youll have to find clues, solve riddles and complete puzzles in order to escape. You will be required to think strategically but its loads of fun! (Humble brag: We successfully escaped the Gold Rush room.)

Orlando Lake Eola

Take a mental breather

While theres no shortage of thrills in Orlando, the city also offers plenty of opportunity to just chill. Every Sunday at 11 a.m. Yoga in the Park is held at Lake Eola Park. Its easy to join in; all levels are welcome and the suggested donation is just $5. After yoga, go for a stroll through the weekly Orlando Farmers’ Market where you’ll discover fresh produce, locally-made arts and crafts. Have a bite to eat and relax in the Beer & Wine Garden (open 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.) while listening to local musicians.Next, check out the surprising detox benefits of cauliflower.

Outside photo of Woods Parka LodgeAs a resident of Toronto for the past 15 years or so, Ive come to loathe winter. Waiting endlessly for delayed streetcars in the dark, windy streets; sloshing through dirty snow on a crowded sidewalk that hasnt been shovelled; not to mention the lousy outlook that comes with. Winter has become a season to get through, to escape, to completely block out. That all changed in 2016 when Danish author and researcher Meik Wiking published his best selling book, The Little Book of Hygge. Despite being dark, and cold, and dreary, Denmark is often said to be the happiest country in the world. Wiking attributes this happiness to the countrys famous hygge mindset, a concept loosely translated as cosyness together or the art of creating intimacy. And it turns out, Canadians are naturally very good at this, something I got to experience first hand at an incredibly Canadian destination. (For more travel inspiration, check out these off-the-beaten path Canadian ski destinations.)Earlier this month, my partner Richie and I escaped the city and travelled to Haliburton, Ont. for an overnight stay at the Woods Parka Lodge. This unique getaway property is Canadas first parka-insulated winter yurt, made of the same materials that Woods uses in its iconic parkas. Inspired by the brands Alverstone Expedition Parka, a classic style that riffs on the original Woods Arctic Parka developed in 1903, the lodge was designed for the modern explorer with an eye for style. Its also available to rent on Airbnb. In The Little Book of Hygge, Wiking writes that hominess is the Canadian translation for hygge. It describes how property can be homey if its authentic and real and how a situation can be homey if it somehow brings to mind the state or feeling of seeking shelter and shutting out the outside world. And thats exactly how the Woods Parka Lodge felt. Surrounded by trees, the yurts humble, icicle-covered faade belied its luxe interior, which was at once spacious and intimate. When we arrived, we were greeted by a roaring fire in the living room, a sweet kitchenette filled with teas and snacks and a pillow-covered king size bed by Endy, a Canadian-made mattress-in-a-box brand, set up beneath a skylight for indoor stargazing. A pair of Woods parkas were hanging by the door and, knowing that we only had a couple of hours of sunlight left to enjoy, we immediately put them on and went for a walk in the snow. With the winter rays dancing in the treetops as tiny birds flitted above and snow crunched underfoot, the effect was pure northern magic.A key component of hygge is spending time with others, the benefits of which Wiking describes as like a hug without touching. Indeed, several studies have proven the correlation between social relationships and happiness, including an 80-year study at Harvard that found that, more than money or fame, close relationships are what keep people happy throughout their lives. Stripping away most of the distractions of modern urban life (we couldnt get any reception at the yurt, but it did have great WiFi), Richie and I shut out the outside world and got back to basics, laughing the evening away while we played Jenga by candlelight. (Suffering from anxiety? A jigsaw puzzle might be just what you need.) It was a mindful moment to savour the charms of winter together what could be more Canadian than that?Next, read up on the health secrets of Scandinavia the happiest region in the world.

How to Recreate the Luxury of a Turkish Hammam At Home https://www.besthealthmag.ca/article/traditional-turkish-hammam-experience/ Tue, 04 Sep 2018 18:41:48 +0000 http://origin-www.besthealthmag.ca/?p=67092894 Get ready for the softest skin of your life.

The post How to Recreate the Luxury of a Turkish Hammam At Home appeared first on Best Health.

From sauna to thermal spring, my dream self-care scenario will forever involve warmth and water. Naturally, an opportunity to experience an authentic Turkish hammam bath had me at hello. After an overnight flight nestled in business class on the award-winning Turkish Airlines, visiting Kili Ali Paa Hamami was my top priority in Istanbul. And it was everything.Found along a bustling thoroughfare populated by luxury hotels, including the iraan Palace Kempinski, the renovated 16th century structure soothed all my senses on contact. White oak and hand-carved stone adorn the spacious reception/lounge area, which is accentuated by a towering dome. After changing into my towel-centric ensemble, Im lead by an attendant into the hot marble room. It is much more beautiful and intimate than I anticipated. The temp is inviting, ranging from 30 to 40C, while daylight streams in through the airy domed ceiling. In the middle awaits a low hexagon slab where patrons lie for 10 minutes to acclimatize and relax before taking residence at an individual washing station. This is where the action happens. My attendant splashes me with endless buckets of water, soaps most of my nooks and crannies, scrubs me from tip to toe with a coarse woolen mitt and shampoos my hair. (Exfoliation actually has some amazing health benefits, beyond soft skin.) My job is to lean this way, or stand that way and summon every ounce of body confidence while wearing only disposable undies in a room full of strangers. Its not exactly relaxing, but thats precisely the point. The historic purpose of the hammam was for the public to get clean function not flash. Some people expect a very harsh service, if they see the videos, or some expect something like a spa. Hammam is not either of those things, so the experience becomes unique. Not necessarily better or worse, but its different, says owner Ergin Iren. The kpk, a.k.a. bubble soap wash, makes darn sure of that. Delightfully enveloped by a mountain of froth, I marvelled at my attendants skilled swinging technique with a fabric case and soapy water to whip up and dispense the most lather I had ever seen.Oh, and did I mention I emerged with the smoothest, softest skin of my life!? The next-level exfoliation is the ultimate epidermal workout. And, surprisingly, a key player is a convenience store staple with a 150-year-long heritage. Its the most unimportant soap of the century. Its not precious, but very Turkish, says Iren. (Find 9 more reasons Turkey is the perfect self-care vacay.)The 1 price tag translated into the ultimate beauty-lovers souvenir, and I departed with a hefty supply to relive my hammam experience at home til next time. (Be sure to include this desert country on your travel bucket list.)Interested in recreating the experience of a traditional Turkish Hammam at home? These essentials can help:

Lucy HaleThough Lucy Hale is best known for playing an adolescent on Pretty Little Liars, her approach to wellness is decidedly wise beyond her years. She doesnt drink and she meditates every day. Even if its just 5 minutes of that, I find it helps me, she told Well + Good. Shes also no stranger to a good workout (she loves SoulCycle and hot yoga) and eats a clean diet focused on whole, raw foods and quality protein.Related: Blake Lively and 5 Other Stars Who Don’t Drink Alcohol EverBut Hale has added another layer to her air-tight self-care regimen: solo travel. (These are the best places to travel alone as a woman.)The actress recently headed to Arizona alone, where she spent her days hiking, meditating and spending time alone. It was there Hale realized just how important self-care is: Ive never done this before because I used to feel that putting myself first was selfish. Its not, she wrote on Instagram. Not only is it healthy, but its necessary so that you can be the best for everyone else around you. While not everyone needs to recharge from the pressures of being in the public eye, everyone does need a mental break. I know this happens in other industries other than the one Im in, but its incredibly easy to get sucked into the vortex of worrying about the next job, the success of a current one and what others think of you, she wrote.

Disclaimer : this is a long caption. For the last week I took a solo trip to Arizona. (FYI -if you want to feel spiritually recharged, Come here.) I spent my days hiking, meditating, and spending time with myself. Ive never done this before because I used to feel that putting myself first was selfish. Its not. This trip was a beautiful reminder that my health and happiness are crucial to the life I want to live and in order to be the best for my career and my loved ones, its necessary to do really nice things for yourself.
